We give parents wide leeway. We let them do all sorts of stuff in the name of "its their kid".I disagreed with a lot of what my kid's friends were allowed to do while they envied stuff I allowed. Ohmygod. I just saw an "adulting" commercial for heinz ketchup.
it seems the public schools and teachers unions are trying to wrest that away from them........or is it the parents are giving it over?
Yeah, each household can have a wide variety of different policies and approaches. Even within that household, depending on the kid.
I love Heinz. What was it about specifically?

I think the information about how much a job will pay is out there and fairly easy to find. The problem is that many government jobs simply don't pay well. YOU complain all the time about how the government misspends trillions, yet here is a perfect example of where the government should be spending more.
I was about to ask what you meant about this "well-rounded" thing but then I remembered that you're a bigot so I'm guessing that you are talking about "race and gender studies" classes. Amiright? Take it up with the university administrators.
As for an Art History major... I can imagine a number of jobs they should be good at, but none of them are high-paying enough to pay off the average amount of debt. Hell, I'll bet living independently is out of the question. It's another of those scam degrees.
NO, let's just eliminate most of the Administrators so the staff that does the work can get paid a bit more.
Well rounded........all of the classes you're required to take in order to get a Degree that have NOTHING to do with your stated major. That's part of the scam, imo. At the high school level it's easier to spot, imo. But college? It should have more offerings, but again, when you're borrowing/paying for them, it shouldn't be so frivolous.
Living independently is tough.........especially by yourself. As you've said about job salaries, it should be very available to all to know what to expect coming out with that degree. It should also be somewhat apparent to a person the relative cost of living in their chosen location. I'll never understand this belief that people can or should live wherever they want, as well. Why is that reality such a tough blow for so many?
Scam degrees, you say? Blasphemy

Scam degrees, you say? Blasphemy 1. Not sure I'd want some of those academics making their own decisions. Administrators are needed.
2. Some "required courses" I can understand such as courses in writing and statistics.
3. Why does the cost of everything keep rising higher and faster than salaries and wages?
4. Yup: degrees that do little else other than to allow the holder to say, "I have a degree."

4. Yup: degrees that do little else other than to allow the holder to say, "I have a degree."
1. I read awhile back that more money was going to Administrative costs than teachers in the K-12 public schools. Where's the complaints about evil corporate systemic exploitation there?
2. How about Science/Biology? or Algebra or Calculus? I'm just thinking there are some courses that many, if not most, will never use again the rest of their lives. And what's most distressing to me is it is clear many students have gotten passed along without ever getting the Basics down.
3. My opinion is it is mostly the Govt's doing. Inflation from printing too much money and spending more than they raise......... combined with ever more intrusion into so many facets of our lives where the cost of everything they touch seems to rise.
4. So you'd blame the Administrators for even having such a degree to offer?

1. Are we talking about k-12 or universities? You keep switching.
2. A science course is good to take to get students thinking critically. As a hater of math, let me say this about that: high school graduates who cannot do algebra shouldn't be anywhere near a college admissions office let alone a classroom. Calculus? Again, it might be good for engendering process-driven critical thinking, but I think statistics has more real world applications.
3. of course you see it as the government's fault rather than businesses constantly pushing everything ever so slightly out of reach of the majority... without a little credit card help.
4. I don't blame anyone for offering a product. I blame idiots for buying it without understanding the limitations of the product. I don't like Shamrock Shakes, but I'm not going to stop going to McDonald's.

3. Businesses don't print money. Businesses can't force Govt to spend. (I realize they lobby corrupt politicians) And businesses do not pass legislation that affects the business sector in such sweeping ways. Lastly, if they did somehow, and cashed in on it via stocks, they'd be charged with crimes by the (guess who?) Govt
4. There ya go......defending big business again. oh, and McDonalds shakes are the worst in the entire fast food biz. Which is weird cuz I thougt Ray Crock sold actual milkshake machines before he bought out the McD Brothers?

3. Yes, and they have this annoying trend/habit of always wanting to be in the black. Because, unlike Govt, you can't stay in business running in the red non-stop.
4. No, just pointing out the futility in trying to Un-idiot people.

Bibles are practically free these days.
I think we'll just have to agree to disagree in the 'clear message' it has within.

Books weren't exactly common around 1000 AD So books not real common until around the 16th century.

Is your kid a bookie? or do they prefer the electronic versions instead?
I'm still chuckling to myself after being told in the 70s that computers would do away with so much on paper. And my cousin is a huge collector of books......cooking mostly.
I think this whole book banning argument is a great example of narrative and spin. I was trying to think of the most gory, nasty and vile books ever produced and if people would support those being read during Drag Queen Story Time? "See, kids? This is how you remove the head from the body after raping and killing someone. For easier transport and disposal."
You think I can get Sesame Street to do a bit on something similar?

I used to have Cablevision..........til the costs rose too high..........then Dish Network.......til the costs rose too high.
We went with DirectTV for awhile........you guessed it.
Then we had Spectrum, which is really just a rewrapping of Cablevision.
Network television has pretty much been dead to me (with the exception of the NFL) since the early 2000s
Lately it's been mostly Netflix, with a few leaps over to Peacock, Prime+, Pluto and Hulu.
And until covid, most of my movie viewing was off of Dvds

I have been meaning to........after his Bond part and Polar, he strikes me as one of those kinda actors that lifts almost every project up.
