Sydnor Jr., a close friend and education director of the US Chamber of Commerce, to write a confidential memorandum for the chamber entitled "Attack on the American Free Enterprise System," an anti-Communist and anti-New Deal blueprint for conservative business interests to retake America. It was based in part on Powell's reaction to the work of activist Ralph Nader, whose 1965 exposé on General Motors, Unsafe at Any Speed, put a focus on the auto industry putting profit ahead of safety, which triggered the American consumer movement. Powell saw it as an undermining of the power of private business and a step towards socialism. His experiences as a corporate lawyer and a director on the board of Phillip Morris from 1964 until his appointment to the Supreme Court made him a champion of the tobacco industry who railed against the growing scientific evidence linking smoking to cancer deaths. He argued, unsuccessfully, that tobacco companies' First Amendment rights were being infringed when news organizations were not giving credence to the cancer denials of the industry.

The memo called for corporate America to become more aggressive in molding society's thinking about business, government, politics and law in the US. It inspired wealthy heirs of earlier American industrialists such as Richard Mellon Scaife, the Earhart Foundation (whose money came from an oil fortune), and the Smith Richardson Foundation (from the cough medicine dynasty)[14] to use their private charitable foundations (which did not have to report their political activities) to join the Carthage Foundation (founded by Scaife in 1964)[14] to fund Powell's vision of a pro-business, anti-socialist, minimally government-regulated America based on what he thought America had been in the heyday of early American industrialism, before the Great Depression and the rise of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal.

The Powell Memorandum thus became the blueprint for the rise of the American conservative movement and the formation of a network of influential right-wing think tanks and lobbying organizations, such as The Heritage Foundation and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) as well as inspiring the US Chamber of Commerce to become far more politically active. CUNY professor David Harvey traces the rise of neoliberalism in the US to this memo.

Powell argued, "The most disquieting voices joining the chorus of criticism came from perfectly respectable elements of society: from the college campus, the pulpit, the media, the intellectual and literary journals, the arts and sciences, and from politicians." In the memorandum, Powell advocated "constant surveillance" of textbook and television content, as well as a purge of left-wing elements. He named consumer advocate Nader as the chief antagonist of American business. Powell urged conservatives to undertake a sustained media-outreach program; including funding neoliberal scholars, publishing books and papers from popular magazines to scholarly journals and influencing public opinion.

This memo foreshadowed a number of Powell's court opinions, especially First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti, which shifted the direction of First Amendment law by declaring that corporate financial influence of elections by independent expenditures should be protected with the same vigor as individual political speech. Much of the future Court opinion in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission relied on the same arguments raised in Bellotti.

Though written confidentially for Sydnor at the Chamber of Commerce, it was discovered by Washington Post columnist Jack Anderson, who reported on its content a year later (after Powell had joined the Supreme Court). Anderson alleged that Powell was trying to undermine the democratic system; however, in terms of business's view of itself in relation to government and public interest groups, the memo could be alternatively read to simply convey conventional thinking among businessmen at the time. Interpreted in this way, the primary contribution of the memo could instead be read as its emphasis on institution-building, particularly updating the Chamber's efforts to influence federal policy. Here, it was a major force in motivating the Chamber and other groups to modernize their efforts to lobby the federal government. Following the memo's directives, conservative foundations greatly increased, pouring money into think-tanks. This rise of conservative philanthropy led to the conservative intellectual movement and its increasing influence over mainstream political discourse, starting in the 1970s and '80s, and due chiefly to the works of the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation.

I don't believe it will drop back below 3/$10........just a strong hunch as everything has bumped up 10-20% recently.

This was predicted all along for you. When you jack up wages, then everything else will naturally go up, as well.

Find that chart that shows Wages compared to the Cost of Living and it will show you that every time, people end up falling further behind.

If McD's goes to $25/hr......you'll never see a crew of 10-15 again. They'll go with more electronic kiosks/apps and man the store with 2-5 people instead. Guaranteed. Then people will gripe they're only concerned about money and profits again.

UPDATE: Rang to tell the guy. He has 4 kids. He told me that he worked 70 hour weeks, and one week only got paid for 40….12 hour days. Fuck me lads. He’s been WEEKS in the job.

The job advertised was for a deli manager in North Dublin. I don’t drive, so made sure the shop would be accessible by public transport before accepting the interview (it would be a 30 minute train). The area manager asked me to meet at a different location (South Dublin) for the interview. My husband took the morning off work to drive me, as it’s not easy to get to by bus. The very first thing out of their mouth was “so the job is actually at this store, we lied on the job listing. We’re firing the manager here but didn’t want him to find out, so advertised that the job was for somewhere else”..

So I sat in the shop, doing an interview for the manager that was at the deli! The area manager told me not to speak to him, they haven’t fired him yet..

The job starts early, there are no trains or busses that would get me there on time, so i knew instantly I couldn’t accept the job. The area manager also told me that they didn’t have the budget to pay the salary advertised (€15/h)..

I have 6 years of deli experience, another 2 as a manager and I cannot find a decent job..which is being made much harder with shite like this.

I’d be tempted to find that poor manager on LinkedIn and give him a heads up.

We can get a sense of its nature in the kinds of drugs people are abusing. The overwhelming majority are opioids, with the synthetic opioid Fentanyl now by far the most common. These drugs are popularly known as painkillers — substances that alleviate distress and induce euphoria. A lot of Americans crave relief from various forms of unhappiness, discontent, malaise, agitation, and other emotional and/or physical pain.

And this problem is uniquely acute in the United States. In The Washington Post's story about the spike in overdose deaths, the most alarming chart by far is one comparing annual overdose rates in the U.S. to those in the wealthy countries of the European Union, plus Norway and Turkey. (The data comes from 2019.) Poland and Turkey have the lowest rates, at 0.4 deaths per 100,000, with Norway coming in at the second highest rate, at 5 deaths per 100,000. And then there's the U.S. at the bottom of the chart, the undisputed leader, with a bar stretching more than four times the length of Norway's — to 21.1 deaths per 100,000 overdoses.
Now add in the results of a 2015 study showing that 32 million Americans (one out of every seven adults) struggled with a serious alcohol problem during the previous year — and that nearly a third of all Americans will exhibit signs of an alcohol-use disorder at some point in their lives. And there's the fact that the United States leads the world in per capita consumption of prescription medications for anxiety and depression, with roughly 13.2 percent of adults using them before the pandemic contributed to a major use spike.

Put it all together and the picture is clear: Many Americans are struggling mightily with profound unhappiness that drives them to seek refuge in various forms of prescribed or self-administered chemical medications, some of them potentially life-threatening.

But the question of "why" remains.

I've used the word "spiritual" to describe this crisis because it seems to involve such comprehensive issues, many of them wrapped up with existential questions of elemental happiness. Our country's civil religion tells us America is the greatest nation in the world because we're left free to pursue happiness however we wish. But who among us really knows how to be happy? Some are raised in traditions that cultivate tacit knowledge of how to flourish and thrive by providing individuals with fixed purposes they are expected to pursue throughout their lives. But many of the rest of us find ourselves flung into the world without such guidance, unsure of what might fulfill us.

At the same time, our country's networks of sociality have become attenuated in recent decades. Rates of church attendance and religious identification are in a state of free fall. Other communal institutions, including marriage and family but also extending to clubs, unions, and fraternal organizations, have been declining for decades as well. Perhaps most alarming of all, recent studies have shown that people are making fewer friends, with unprecedented numbers claiming to be entirely friendless. No doubt this has gotten worse as the result of the enforced isolation of the pandemic.

It's hard to think of a more effective recipe for loneliness, depression, and drug addiction than this. It might also be an ideal breeding ground for radically illiberal politics of the far left and right, especially when it's combined with the ersatz connection people seek and find online in politically siloed social-media networks.

Either way, Americans appear to be losing their way in the world, anxiously pursuing a happiness that eludes them, and ending up drawn to toxic chemical and ideological substitutes for relief from the misery of a disconnected, purposeless existence.

Which might just be another way of saying that radical individualism is hard — and quite possibly a burden too heavy for many of us to bear. That doesn't mean it will do any good to pine for an easy path to redemption from our struggles and the return of a past in which communal contentment was more commonplace. But it might mean it would be a good idea to begin doing the arduous work of laying a foundation for such a rebirth by cultivating habits and pursuing social projects that could issue in new forms of solidarity — schools, sporting events, religious enterprises, forms of collective artistic expression.

That certainly won't be easy, and it may not succeed. But the alternative — an ever-increasing malaise and ever-deeper withdrawal into isolation, psychic suffering, and often lethal self-medication — is bound to be worse.

Acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol and sold widely under the brand names Tylenol and Panadol, also increases risk-taking, according to a study published in 2020 that measured changes in people's behavior when under the influence of the common over-the-counter medication.

"Acetaminophen seems to make people feel less negative emotion when they consider risky activities – they just don't feel as scared," neuroscientist Baldwin Way from The Ohio State University explained last year.

"With nearly 25 percent of the population in the US taking acetaminophen each week, reduced risk perceptions and increased risk-taking could have important effects on society."

The findings add to a recent body of research suggesting that acetaminophen's effects on pain reduction also extend to various psychological processes, lowering people's receptivity to hurt feelings, experiencing reduced empathy, and even blunting cognitive functions.

Similarly, Way's study suggests people's affective ability to perceive and evaluate risks can be impaired when they take acetaminophen. While the effects might be slight, they're definitely worth noting, given acetaminophen is the most common drug ingredient in America, found in over 600 different kinds of over-the-counter and prescription medicines

The same regulating body has been fighting the war on drugs. You figure more regulations will fix things? I do not. The amateur drug users will continue to experiment and mix their own stashes, too.  Many don't even graduate, but they're all Junior Chemists.
