NextShark San Dieguito superintendent to sue after being placed on leave for her remarks about Asian studentsCarl Samson Mon, April 25, 2022, 2:31 PM Superintendent Cheryl James-Ward is reportedly filing a lawsuit against the San Dieguito Union High School District (SDUHSD) after its board placed her on administrative leave over her controversial remarks on Asian students. James-Ward made the comments on April 11 during a board training session on diversity, equity and inclusion. After showing data which showed that Asian students receive fewer D and F grades compared to students of other ethnic or racial groups, Board Vice President and Trustee Michael Allman asked, “Do we know why Asian students do so well in school?” In response, James-Ward said it is because those students are from rich families coming from China — a comment some parents and other critics later slammed as “racist.” “We have an influx of Asians from China, and the people who are able to make that journey are wealthy,” James-Ward said. “You cannot come to America and buy a house for $2 million unless you have money.” The superintendent went on to cite her own community in Carmel Valley as an example. She claimed that Chinese families have stronger support systems at home, while Latinx parents have jobs that prevent them from finding the time to help their children. Critics have since accused James-Ward of racism and stereotyping by perpetuating the model minority myth. “I was totally shocked that someone with her experience, education and background could say some low-level things like that,” Jason Zho, a parent who was present at a school board meeting on April 13, told CBS 8. Amid calls for her resignation, James-Ward apologized to the academic community. She also apologized in a letter sent to students’ families on April 13. Due to the controversy, members of the school board voted 3-1 to place the superintendent on administrative leave on Wednesday. They then unanimously voted to make Associate Superintendent of Business Services Tina Douglas SDUHSD’s interim superintendent on Friday. James-Ward, however, believes their decision was not motivated by her comments on Asian students. Instead, she says it was retaliation for her complaint against Allman in March, which remains under investigation. “This is a retaliation case,” James-Ward’s attorney, Josh Gruenberg, told NBC San Diego. “No one gets fired for what she said.” James-Ward told NBC San Diego that “Michael Allman is a bully.” She has not gone into detail about her complaint, but she claims that she will stand by it. She's not entirely wrong... except for conflating "support systems" with "wealth" and specifically citing Chinese.
The fact that she went from "Asian" to "Chinese" in the blink of an eye, makes me think she's got a particular axe to grind and she's using a whet stone called, "racism."

This is another area where throwing out the 'racism' card is too overused.
Maybe she does have actual valid points about Asians and their approach to education? But instead of viewing it positively, she wants to turn to skin color instead of the content of the parents character in regards to how they push their children to do better in school? Isn't that what all parents should be agreed upon?
I can recall a few stories during certain riotous events where Korean grocers were blamed for 'stealing the wealth' from black neighborhoods. Or other similar tales. Some involving Middle Easterners (especially after 9/11)
It never struck me as a real argument over skin color, but a deflection as to why others hadn't simply replicated the same successful behaviors?
Is it also horrible of me to guess that most Americans (white or black) couldn't really tell the difference between the many Asian groups anyway? so by extension they're not being specifically racist sometimes....... just unfamiliar with the variety.

2. It shows ignorance, the mother of racism. The father of racism is "hatred" which we see in number...
3. The inability to see things beyond skin tone is racism.
4. Then she should have just stuck with "Asian" rather than getting specific.
It's not about whether or not something might be true. It's all in the presentation that gives a racist away.

That is an interesting way to view it. Did you always feel that way? or was it something you picked up during your travels?
It reminds me a bit of the screaming a few years back of the use of the word 'oriental' versus Asian

2. Does it bother you that someone took away your ability to be more subtle in your racism?

Well, weren't you always Mr.Smarty-Smart
It just bothers me that people keep changing what's offensive to them. It's like a never can win scenario cuz they'll never be happy. I saw a re-run of Comedians in Cars with Trevor Noah this morning and he was explaining Apartheid to Jerry. He said there were really no other groups in S Africa for the most part. There were whites and there were blacks........and on the occasion the two mixed to create children, those people were called colored.
Now i've lived thru a time when some people do not like either of the latter terms........while I've constantly asked "What exactly is white, anyway?" And none of it seems to matter to me as I'm of the opinion if the skin shade is removed from the equation, it's all the same.

And none of it seems to matter to me as I'm of the opinion if the skin shade is removed from the equation, it's all the same. Here's the thing, Abs, there are still plenty of people for whom skin tone DOES matter and these people are setting policies based on that notion.
That you treat everyone equally is great, but if you can't take the next step to see that not everyone is like you - particularly those with power - then you're missing the whole point about the complaints of systemic racism. Being colorblind may make you feel better about how you live your life, but it also seems to make you blind to the problems your friends of color face.
You say, "I had to work hard and sacrifice for what I have. They should work hard and sacrifice too!"
What you're refusing to see is that they quite often (mostly) have to work even harder than you and sacrifice more than you just to reach the same level of success that you enjoy. There are far more obstacles in their way* and you should want to remove them if you truly believe in equality.
*Yes, some of the obstacles are of their own making, but it's a bit... racist... to dwell on those when some of the larger, external obstacles are partly to blame. There are always going to be complainers, but until the playing field is truly level, you can't positively and definitively say who those folks are.
Before you jump onto the "equality of outcomes" bullshit, what I just said has nothing to do with that notion. It's quite clear that I'm not but I know that's the first thing that popped into your mind. Maybe you should ask yourself why you are always looking for an excuse to not make the playing field level.

Maybe because it's always the Govt claiming to be fixing things........yet rarely do? And like you have noted yourself, it's not about equality anymore but revenge and making in unfair in another direction instead. Or just plain retaining political power.
I honestly believe things were improving in the right direction throughout most of my decades.
When it was the gays, I said "All it'll take is a gay child or grandchild and that bigot will be forced to come to grips with it/change." And the same has been true when it comes to these dopey racial things. No need for yet another ineffective anti-bullying anti-discrimination pro-diversity policy from on high.
I get what you're saying about putting myself in other peoples' place........but that would also include putting myself in the places of those who aren't so colorblind. Y'know.....that massive pool of humanity that I dislike so much yet you keep telling me I'm supposed to care about? Seems like a Sisyphus challenge to me.

Funny how you want the government to change when it will benefit you but it's too much of a challenge when it will benefit someone else....

Change?
You consider shrinking and just plain costing less to be really changing? Aren't I still expecting their more limited role to benefit others?
Do you ask your Exes to change? or just plain leave you alone once it's clear it's not gonna work?

Do you want the government to shrink and cost less because you want to pay less in taxes or because you want other people to pay less in taxes? Before you answer... wouldn't "shrinking the government" while leaving tax rates the same be a good thing? Pay down the debt etc.?

As I am poor myself, I do not pay all that much in taxes (with the exception of property taxes) I have repeatedly stated I want all tax payers to be paying less than the current rates.
Oh, it absolutely would and I would actually support such a thing provided it went ONLY to strictly paying down the debt in an agreed amount of time.

1. Poor? You and the wife have a house (with all the associated costs), two cars (with all the associated costs), and multiple pets (with all the associated costs). You go on vacations. And I've never heard you complain about having too much month at the end of the money. What you call "poor," most of the truly poor would call heaven.
As for tax rates, I'm pretty sure that having them be lower for other people is more of a "happy coincidence" rather than an actual intent
2. So start voting out the people who aren't delivering on their promises.

1. Yes, poor. By the Govt's own numbers, I make a small amount of money. MOST of the world would view our poor people as wealthy. That's why they climb on rafts just to get here and usually do better with each $Dollar than the average American.
FYI: It's actually 3 cars, my classic Honda sits idle over the Winter. And I sold that 4th toy that I bought cuz I didn't wanna get involved with body work and maintaining a righthand drive older vehicle.
I think merh has more cats than I have dogs. I've argued we should both be allowed to deduct them as dependents, though.
I haven't gone on vacation with the wife her the last several stints.......partially because I don't wanna spend the money........partially because Vegas is still semi-shut down due to covid.
You keep discounting just how far I stretch a dollar, though........which I find odd.
The way I see it, if everyone's taxes were lowered, then they could voluntarily send the money directly to whatever cause or charity they'd prefer. (Not they would for sure) And the rates that I've suggested would actually leave my rate about the same.
2. You've mentioned voting for newcomers before.

1. Oh. So you actually have waaaaay more than an actually poor person.
I don't discount how far you can stretch a dollar. I discount the notion that "anyone can do it" and get the same result as you.
2. And I will continue to say, "Vote out all incumbents" until people start doing it or until the people voted in start doing the jobs we hired them to do.

1. Do I? I'd think 2 cars per family is the standard these days, at least........except in the big cities where a car's expense of parking and tickets might be too much to bare.
The same? I'm not expecting the exact same, but a bare minimum of achievement? I don't think that's too much too ask of any able bodied person. I see what people who make much more than I do get up to with their time and money and at the end of the day, they can not make ends meet. Now if I was relying on my wife's larger income to support me, I could see your argument better.........but since we split the common bills 1/2 and 1/2, I do not see how it isn't possible for others.
2. I think that's probably the best idea.

1. That assumes that every able bodied person has the same access to all the same things at the same prices and has the exact same access to exactly the same amount of money you make or more.

I do not wanna assume too much.........but aside from living in an area where the cost of living is outrageous......which IS a choice, right?........ I don't think it's unreasonable to think that just about anyone could make minimum wage or slightly above it, like I have.
The tough part comes in by avoiding all of the costly things people find themselves spending money on. Along with all of the wasteful habits people get up to........ just having a child before you're financially able, that'll set you back for approximately 2 decades.
Throw in divorces and bankruptcies, it's easy to see why so many Americans are still spinning their wheels into their 40s and later.

1. We've been through this before but it doesn't seem to penetrate... like the rock and the water... the average cost of a house is about 8 times higher than when you built/bought your house but minimum wage hasn't even tripled yet.
2. True. See #1
