1. We've been through this before but it doesn't seem to penetrate... like the rock and the water... the average cost of a house is about 8 times higher than when you built/bought your house but minimum wage hasn't even tripled yet.
2. True. See #1
3. Not everyone gets married for the purpose of having a beard
1. Forget the average cost. They have gone up a lot. Anyone can get their foot in the door with what they can afford.......and move up from there. My cousin did it after the prices started going up all by himself, with not a huge income. (Granted, I wouldn't want that house or that neighborhood........but it supposedly has almost doubled in value since he bought it just a few years ago)
3. I was thinking about how much crap Ben Carson took for this advice: "Number one, finish high school. Number two, get married. Number three, get a job. Number four, wait until you`re married to have children. Just do those things, you're very unlikely to live in poverty if you do those things, and you're much more likely to be able to realize the American dream."
We can all laugh at the stodgy old guy and his antiquated views........but is he wrong?
I feel like even goofy Mike Pence took crap for never meeting with any women unaccompanied......and in this era of #MeToo..........can you think of a better policy to protect yourself?

1. The cousin story again? BTW, I meant to ask: how old is this cousin?

So it took him til age 45-ish to finally scrape together enough money to buy a shitty house in a shitty neighborhood?
That's not really a big help to your argument, Abs.

IIRC, it was about 8-10 years.
But another example might be his younger brother........the truck driver. He made well over $60,000/yr for several years. But never bothered buying a plot of land or a small home for himself. Now he's massively obese and living in his older brother's basement (until he gets evicted shortly) That's extremely poor planning on his part, imo

2. Has it ever occurred to you that some people just don't want to buy a house?
But at least it shows that everyone's situation is different. Not everyone can expect EQUALITY OF OUTCOME with you.

1. heheheh That would be a funny Robin Hood tale, wouldn't it?
2. Absolutely and I certainly see the Pros-Cons of both scenarios. My basic questions are this: IF you decide to rent instead of buy, you realize that rent will always be due, correct? So you'll need to plan and set up a method by which your income will always have an amount available to pay that rent (which may expectedly rise over time) Is that too much to expect for people to problem solve on their own? Or does it automatically become the burden on others in the way of rent controls and tax payer subsidies?
Everyone's situation is definitely different. The outcome may not be equal to mine........but if I'm putting in sort of a bare minimum of effort on a bare minimum of income....... is it too much to expect most others to be able to do the same? As a teacher, do you not expect a bare minimum from each student when it comes to assignments or homework? Otherwise they do not pass GO!, correct?

1. Robin Hood? Making money illegally then using it to buy a house is like Robin Hood?
2. Not everyone who rents is getting a subsidy. Also, do you think it's OK for a landlord to just increase rent by whatever amount they choose at any time? 20%... 30%... higher increases are OK just because?
You really seem to view renters as second-class citizens. Is it because they don't pay property taxes, Abs? You don't feel that they should have equal access to social benefits or any say about them at all, I'll bet.
3. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you didn't save for and build a house all while making minimum wage at a part-time job... or even just a single full-time one for that matter

1. Robin Hood stole from the rich.......and after his expenses, gave to the poor
2. Of course not......but again, what are people calling for once rents start to rise? More Govt assistance. They fail to connect the dots of higher taxes, higher costs to owners........might actually end up getting their rent raised? I do not think it's OK for landlords to jack the rates for no apparent reason. But it's their property. One fella I know owns several and he has been so pleased with most of his renters, that he now gives them December for free as a Xmas present. They've paid off his properties for him over the years and he's sitting comfortably. But remember, even them, after all these years.......Rent is still due.
But they do......in the form of higher rents. If taxes go up, rent will most likely follow soon after.
I do feel property owners should have more say than renters when it comes to how tax dollars get spent in any given community. Sorry, that's just the truth. I also feel there should be a LIMIT on the amount of rentals in any given area just to maintain a certain level of 'investment' in said communities.
3. I was in my early 20s, working sometimes 3 jobs. IIRC, the minimum wage back then was in the $3.15/hr range. My girlfriend (now wife) was an asst manager at a restaurant pulling down probably about $22K/yr

1. I'm not sure that your jailbird cousin gave anything to the poor, so I'm at a loss. Moving on....
2. I know rents are going to go up, Abbey. I also know they don't have to go up by some of the outrageous amounts we've been seeing over the past couple years.
You talk about renters saving for inevitable increases, but what about the landlords doing some saving for unforeseen circumstances as well? Why are you letting them off the hook?
3. So... you didn't do just the "bare minimum"... and you didn't do it alone... and once again we're back to talking about the cost of a house going up 400 to 500% but wages only increasing 130% over the same period of time.

1. Well now as a home owner and tax payer........he's certainly contributing to the poor whether he likes it or not.
2. They don't have to? Are you suggesting some sort of restraint of controls on profit margins or something? How else could you limit what someone charges? Over those last few years there are MORE renters than ever before, there are more Illegals and Legals being allowed into the country and the property values have gone up by at least 20% or more. We'd probably agree that massive firms like Blackrock buying up tons of homes is bad for buyers and renters alike.......but what do you suggest? The US Govt won't even stop Foreign Investors from buying property in the USA, unlike many other countries prohibit in their own lands.
The landlord should just EAT the increases? Out of the goodness of their hearts? Why did they bother to become landlords if they didn't want to make sure to receive a return on their investment?
3. No, I put in a lot of hours while I was still young, full of energy and didn't have children. It's only been since my late 30s and early 40s that I really started to coast and relax. See? I planned on getting older and not wanting to put in grueling hours later in life.
One can do it alone, of course imo..........but it's no secret it's easier to do with a partner or two. That's what roommates are for right outta school or into early adulthood. Even much later in life if you can get along with others. Why NOT split the bills and save yourself some money and headaches?
I'm sorry I can't offer a solution to what the politicians do to this country and drive prices thru the roof. I've been barking about these things for years to no avail. Now? I say "Eat shit" because this is precisely what people voted for all this time.

1. He's contributing to his community. Again, you show that you consider renters as lesser human beings. You consider the poor (not always the same as "renters") to be lesser human beings. Sounds like you were taught that home ownership was a symbol of "success" and that made you a "winner." You're a night clerk at a Kinko's or whatever, but as long as you are a home owner, you are still "better" than someone, right?
2. I'm suggest that landlords should have followed YOUR advice and had a personal safety net saved up. You have a "rainy day" fund, don't you, Abs? As fastidious about finances as you claim to be, I'll bet you probably have a good 6 months of expenses saved up. I'll also bet that YOU never had to join the crowds at the stores because YOU probably have a garage full of canned goods, bottled water, paper towels, toilet paper, and a big-ass freezer filled with meat.
Why should the renters have been prepared but not the landlords, Abs?
3. You bark... but you still vote for the people who are fucking you in the ass.

1. For someone who doesn't like words put into his mouth......... I am allowed to believe that come people are better and more productive citizens, right? Has nothing to do with their humanity. A criminal in prison is not nearly the asset as a farmer producing food or a garbage man taking away waste, right? I became convinced that having a home was a first step in your own future stability. It was something that should be checked off the list of accomplishments before venturing down the path of parenthood, imo. As a childless adult, you can do whatever you'd like for as long as you like, imo provided you're footing the bills.
2. I realize what you're suggesting........but it's not much different than the reality of most business owners. They're not independently wealthy. They rely on a return on their investment to get by and maintain. No rents paid? No mortgages paid. Property goes into foreclosure....and then the renters get booted by the new owner.
I do. And yep, that's true. I stock up on what I consider to be my essentials. Covid was hardly an inconvenience for me in that regard. Nope, no garage filled with canned goods. I haven't gone full prepper or anything. And my freezer is just an average single door type. Mostly pizza and ground beef.
Because the renters are walking a more unstable existence. They can be evicted normally in a relatively short amount of time. Foreclosure can take a bit longer.
3. That's true. I've been stuck, like millions of others, by choosing what is viewed as the 'lesser of 2 evils'. It is a regrettable arrangement. The Establishment has certainly been effective in keeping most 3rd party types isolated and unelectable. Then came Trump. And people like you screamed it was worse than the 2 evils? I disagreed.

In short: anyone who doesn't own a home is shit.
Landlords and businesses don't need to be held to any "basic standards" of fiscal responsibility.
And you vote for people who are going to fuck over the "lesser human beings."

I will always tend to vote for business types over social welfare programs. This has been kept a secret?
