Defense attorneys claimed that Arbery’s criminal record stretched back to 2013. The most crucial insight his criminal records show is that he “used running or jogging as a cover to commit crimes.”

The defendants’ attorney Robert Rubin pointed out that Arbery was even known as the “jogger” due to his pattern of dashing into convenience stores, stealing, and running away. In addition to this, Arbery was on probation for two crimes.

The first crime was due to carrying a handgun onto school property. The other crime was for fleeing police. His criminal records also show two separate police encounters in which Arbery threatened
and cursed at officers.

This evidence is troubling, as the jurors may have decided the case differently had they not been aware that Arbery frequently used jogging as a cover to commit crimes.

While vigilantism should not be supported, these blocked criminal records call Arbery’s “innocent jog” into question plus shouldn’t all Americans receive access to a fair trial no matter the crime?

The exclusion of this evidence definitely points to the filing of an appeal, which means that this case is far from over.

NBC 7 Investigates: San Diego Police Face Scrutiny Over Woman's Murder
Neighbors called 911 begging for help nearly two hours before police arrived to the victim’s Rancho Peñasquitos home

Wilted flowers mark the outdoor staircase leading up to the condo where police say a San Diego man murdered Connie Dadkhah, 45. That man, Parrish Chambers Jr., 44, is now sitting in a jail cell without bail awaiting trial for murder.

Yet three of Connie’s neighbors who spoke with NBC 7 Investigates feel police deserve some of the blame.

“Had they just done their job, she would still be alive,” said Michelle.

“It’s incredibly upsetting,” said Mike. “It’s really unbelievable. Very, very scary.”

“I just feel such a strange combination of anxiety and anger and sadness,” said Sally. “It could have been prevented.”

In order to protect their identities, NBC 7 Investigates is using fictitious names for the neighbors.

“Had they just done their job, she would still be alive.”

Officers found Connie’s lifeless body inside her condo Wednesday morning, June 15. But neighbor interviews, dispatch records, 911 call timestamps and surveillance video all gathered by NBC 7 Investigates show the calls for help started nearly 12 hours earlier.

Around 7 p.m. the night before two neighbors called 911 reporting a man banging on Connie’s door and screaming. Over the next hour, at least five more calls rolled into 911, but no officers were dispatched. Then, just after 8 p.m., neighbors heard and saw something that prompted dispatchers to speed up the police response.

“He somehow managed to climb onto her balcony and break through her glass door. So he broke in,” said Sally.

“I told them [police] that there is an active burglary happening to my neighbor’s house,” said Michelle. “I’m looking at him through the window. He entered through the second-story sliding glass door, he busted the door.”

Sally told NBC 7 Investigates she was still on the line with the dispatcher when she heard a physical fight.

“I’ve never heard somebody that angry in my entire life,” said Sally. “He was running so hard that I genuinely thought he might break through the ceiling. I remember saying verbatim, ‘He’s going to kill her.’”

At that point, dispatch records show the call was upgraded to a higher priority, and officers started staging at a parking lot nearby. About 45 minutes later, they arrived at Connie’s condo and knocked on the door.

“They finally show up,” said Michelle. “They’re walking up and I’m noticing them looking around and I come out of my door and I point to the unit and I say he’s in there, and they just nodded their heads. So they flashed their light, they could totally see the broken glass.”

Police say officers tried calling Connie’s phone and looked for her car. But since Connie didn’t answer the door, officers ultimately left.

“At this point, I'm like what is going on?” said Michelle. “Where are they going? What’s happening? You have no idea what he’s going to do. He can easily break into someone else’s home. Especially on the first floor if he got into the second floor. And I was thinking why is it not an emergency? Why are they just walking away?”

The next morning, just before 8:30 a.m., police say Chambers came outside and told a neighbor to call 911 because Connie was dead. Surveillance video obtained by NBC 7 Investigates shows officers arresting Chambers minutes later.

NBC 7 Investigates has learned this is not the first time police have been called to Connie’s home. In fact, Chambers was not even supposed to be near Connie. A judge ordered Chambers to stay away from Connie as one of his probationary terms for a vandalism conviction in 2020.

“The victim in that case was actually the victim of the homicide as well,” said the prosecutor during Chambers’ preliminary hearing.

“I was just overcome with grief,” said Shannon Jones.

Jones says Connie meant a lot to him over their 15-year-long friendship. At one point the two even dated.

“Just devastated,” Jones said. “She was one of the closest people in my life.”

While he may be devastated, Jones told NBC 7 Investigates he wasn’t totally surprised to hear about her murder. Unfortunately, Jones says her alleged killer was no stranger to Connie, him or the police.

“He was a stalker, and a user, and an abuser,” said Jones.

Jones shared cell phone video with NBC 7 Investigates, taken back in October 2020. In the video, he claims Connie called him to help get Chambers out of her apartment.

Jones said Chambers met Connie through her volunteer work with mental health outreach, became smitten with her, tracked down her address, and constantly visited despite repeated requests that Chambers leave her alone. Both Jones and a neighbor told us Chambers occasionally assaulted Connie, and the times that police were called, he wasn’t arrested.

“It had been going on for a year and a half, almost two years,” said Jones. “And it was all her responsibility to make it stop. That’s the way they made it seem.”

Lt. Steven Shebloski with the San Diego Police Homicide Unit told NBC 7 Investigates that the officers who responded last month upheld their oath to protect Connie.

“They were making the best decision they had based on the information at the time,” said Shebloski. “And, at the end of the day and the following day, did a tragedy happen? Absolutely, but I don't think that’s because of the officers’ response.”

He says no officers were dispatched in the first hour because the calls were initially categorized as a lower priority event.

Tuesday, June 14, 2022 - 6:59 PM - "Sally" calls 911, reports a man banging on Connie's door and screaming
7:04 PM - Second caller reports a man is yelling at passersby
7:16 PM - "Sally's" mom calls 911, reports her daughter is home alone and afraid
7:25 PM - Another person calls 911, says man is pulling on electrical box, carrying a bottle
7:32 PM - "Sally" calls 911 for the second time, says man is still in the area yelling
7:46 PM "Sally's" father calls 911, asking about police response delay
7:51 PM - "Sally" calls 911 for the third time, asking about the delay, says the man is banging on Connie's door
8:00 PM - "Sally" says the man breaks into Connie's condo and she hears a physical fight inside, calls 911 for the fourth time
8:02 PM - Another neighbor, "Michelle," calls 911 to report that she saw a man climb up a wall, break a sliding glass door and go inside Connie's condo
8:03 PM - Event type changed from disturbing the peace, to disturbing the peace with violence; Event priority changed from 2 to 1
8:05 PM - "Sally" is still on the phone with 911, and tells them she thought the man had a weapon because he had something in his pocket that he was waving around
8:08 PM Another person calls 911 to report he saw a man break a window and go inside the condo, believes he is still in the condo
8:09 PM - Police begin staging at a nearby post office to coordinate response
8:40 PM - "Michelle" calls 911 again, asking about the delay, says she believes the man is still inside
8:41 PM - Police head to Connie's condo
8:47 PM Police arrive at Connie's condo. They knock on the door, call her phone and look for her vehicle.
09:03 PM - Police tell dispatch they will be clearing from the location, they were unable to make contact
9:19 PM - Police tell dispatch they didn't hear any noise or see any movement inside. They say a neighbor they spoke with didn't hear any physical fights in the condo, had not seen Connie and didn't know if she was actually inside. Officers leave the scene.
9:41 PM - "Michelle" calls 911 and asks to speak to officers who responded earlier, wants to know why they didn't force their way into the condo
10:32 PM - One of the sergeants who responded calls "Michelle" back. She says he told her the reason they didn't go in is because the description of the man from the callers matched the description of the man who lives there so he broke into his own house essentially.

“Unfortunately those calls can stack in terms of time of dispatch to the time of response,” said Shebloski.

But remember, even after dispatchers upgraded it to a higher priority, it still took officers another 45 minutes to knock on the front door.

“In this case, officers had information on that particular address involving the male that lived there, or at least their impression of the male that lived there,” said Shebloski when asked why it took so long for officers to arrive. “So one of the things they did is that they had a meeting beforehand to have resources in place, especially less lethal options, in order to contact the person that lived there in a safe manner.”

When asked why officers didn’t go inside the unit, Shebloski said that officers couldn’t verify a disturbance was taking place, didn’t hear anything and didn’t see anyone.

The lieutenant went on to say, “There was a reasonable interpretation that this man lived there.” Shebloski describes a confidential police record known as a Prior Activity Code (PAC) file which gives responding officers a history or notes about the address they are being dispatched to. He says that file indicated that Chambers had been contacted there before.

After NBC 7 Investigates broke this story, we continued to push SDPD for more answers about that PAC file. Ultimately, police agreed to unredact part of the PAC file from a Call For Service report we had obtained. That report was from an incident on April 22 between Chambers and Connie.

It says the following: “If CFS (Call For Service) comes out with this address, have three (3) officers, a SGT, and a K9 respond.”

It then mentions Parrish Chambers by name, and includes redacted information about his criminal history. Police tell us the mention of Chambers in the address history is what led officers to believe he lives there, even though it does not explicitly state he is a resident.

“When you’re going to force entry into someone’s home, that is the highest level of legal standard we operate under,” said Shebloski. “So you have to be on point legally and tactically. Because if officers go in and make the wrong decision on a poor guy that left his keys in there and broke into his own house and a significant use of force, or God forbid officers use deadly force, there is going to be a lot of hard questions asked of that supervisor and those officers.”

The officers responding on June 14 would not have seen any of the other information included in that April 22 report. That included officers telling dispatch there were visible injuries on Connie, that there was no prior domestic relationship with Chambers, and that she did not want to pursue charges against him. Officers advised her to lock all her doors and call police if he came back. That same report ends with officers explicitly telling dispatchers that Chambers does not live at her address.

Police also say officers would have had the ability to run a criminal background check on Chambers and also pull information that could have revealed his court order to stay away from Connie. However, they say it’s unclear if officers conducted those checks.

While Shebloski stands with the officers who responded that night, he says he can understand the community’s concerns.

“The people who called in, they did everything right,” said Shebloski. “They called 911. They repeatedly called back. They did everything right. I understand why people are upset. The chief understands why people are upset. That is not lost upon us and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”

While Shebloski says officers “get it right” the vast majority of the time, he says the chief’s office is now reviewing the police response in this incident. He says that’s standard in “critical incidents.”

“It felt awful,” said Sally. “I was on the phone with the police. They were not showing up. I was literally hiding in a closet panicking for her safety as well as my own safety.”

Back in Rancho Penasquitos, neighbors tell us if there’s a next time, they’re not sure they should bother to call 911.

“I have zero confidence in the police,” said Sally. “This has taught me I need to take my safety into my own hands. Truly I feel like the police are not here for me, are not here to help.”

“I’m very angry,” said Michelle. “How do I know they’re going to be here for me if I need to call them? How do I know they’re going to be here for my children if they need to call them? How can I trust that?”

“It felt awful. I was on the phone with the police. They were not showing up. I was literally hiding in a closet panicking for her safety as well as my own safety.”

While they believe Connie would still be alive if the police responded differently, they hope in death, her case can prompt change.

“Her compassion and empathy was limitless,” said Jones. “She was one of the most beautiful and innocent souls I’ve ever known.”

The county still hasn’t released Connie’s cause of death.

In the meantime, Chambers has pleaded not guilty and is locked up without bail. He is scheduled to be back in court in mid-August. NBC 7 Investigates reached out to Chambers and his defense attorney. That public defender told us in an email “...being charged with a crime is not evidence that a crime that actually committed, and Mr. Chambers is presumed innocent at this point in the litigation.”

Public records obtained by NBC 7 Investigates showed other police calls placed around the time of Connie’s murder. Seven of the 10 officers that ultimately responded were at a suicide call from roughly 7 to 8 p.m. And two of the other officers were working a road rage incident before they all started staging to respond to Connie’s condo at 8 pm.

However, regardless of what else may have been going on that night, dispatchers initially assigned this as a Priority 2 call which has a response time standard of 27 minutes. About an hour later it was upgraded to a Priority 1 call, which has a response time standard of 14 minutes. Police failed to meet both standards.

Cops kicking in doors and shooting people/mentally ill types in their own homes...........and then AFTER a murder like this "WHY didn't the police just go in?" Well, again.......where were all the caring neighbors? Crouching behind their blinds? Hiding in their closets?

They stood in the parking lot for 45 minutes. Knocked on the door, got no answer & left.

All their response times are over the desired time outside the prime call of 7 minutes.  The further down it goes, the longer it gets to double the desired response time

Cops need PROBABLE CAUSE in order to just go into someone's private residence. How are you NOT fully aware of this? I know you're willing to give up all of your privacy and rights for the promise of security.......but the Constitution hasn't quite given up the ghost completely yet. They CAN'T just bust in. Criminal cases get tossed when the Rules are broken.

According the their computers, that was the address they'd dealt with him multiple times in the past.......so to them, it looks like his home address. But even if they knew he wasn't a resident there.......when they arrived, no answer, no cries for help, nothing. Why didn't all the neighbors come outside before they left instead of just watching for that hour or two?

So she and her neighbors dealt with this lowlife for 2 years and NONE of them thought to get a gun? protect themselves and their neighbors? In Cali? Where the Govt bends over backwards to serve the homeless and the Illegals? How nutty are these people?

Crime goes up and down. It goes down when you enforce laws and take the problem people OFF the street. It goes up when your favorite kinda politicians get their way.

Check your local police depts. How are they doing staffing? Here in little tiny GB and Brown County, they've been running short. They can't get qualified applicants anymore. Someone I know just retired from the job after 30 years. He had to compete with over 600 when he got hired in the 90s. Now? They have less than 25 applying........and most of them won't pass the tests.

Add to that what your faves have done to the morale of police departments across the country. You think they're gonna risk their necks, their pensions and their jobs for every call? NOT a chance.

A Michigan woman was denied a protection order against her husband two weeks before she and her family were found dead Sunday in an apparent murder-suicide, court documents show.

Tirany Savage, 35, filed for the order June 24 in Michigan’s 34th Circuit Court, claiming her husband, Bo Eugene Savage, had recently bought a gun, repeatedly threatened suicide and refused to leave the family’s home, according to documents published by NBC affiliate WPBN of Traverse City.

“I do not want my safety or my son’s safety in jeopardy,” she wrote, according to the order.

The order was denied three days later by a judge who found insufficient evidence of immediate or irreparable injury, according to documents obtained by the station.

The judge, Troy Daniel, wrote that Savage could request the order in divorce court, the documents show. Tirany Savage filed for divorce last Thursday, the station reported.

Three days later, deputies in Roscommon Township, roughly 115 miles north of Lansing, were dispatched to a home around 3:30 a.m. and found the bodies of Tirany Savage; her husband; her son, Dayton Cowdrey, 13; and her mother, Kim Lynette Ebright, 58, the Roscommon County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The sheriff's office said that the family appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds and that the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide.

The sheriff's office did not say who appears to have fired the gun. Undersheriff Ben Lowe did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Daniel could not immediately be reached at a number listed for him on the court website, and his election campaign did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday evening.

Given all of the rules of evidence/discovery and the newest attitude toward police in general? YES!

They didn't KNOW a thing. They had someone make a claim. You could make a claim someone sped thru your neighborhood........but unless the cops see it themselves or the person admits to it directly, they can't do a thing.

WE handcuff the police........and then wonder why the criminals act so brazenly these days? The flipside of that is allowing the police to get away with too much abuse of our rights. And I'm sure you don't want that.

San Diego's crack down on antifa is reaching new heights.

A grand jury in San Diego indicted 11 individuals for protest-related acts of violence committed against supporters of former President Donald Trump. It’s a case, brought against antifascist protesters, that’s thorough in its absurdity. Recently, a prosecutor in San Diego attempted to strip the people charged of their constitutional rights, all because they purchased cans of Twisted Tea.

The initial charges, most of which were originally brought in December 2021, stem from a protest nearly a year earlier in the wake of the Capitol riot.

And some of these individuals—whom the San Diego district attorney is prosecuting as part of a “conspiracy” to “incite and participate in a riot” in a campaign she is waging against antifa—are facing longer sentences than many of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists.

During the arraignment on June 7, San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan requested that the judge grant a Fourth waiver for the 11 defendants. Under such Fourth waiver, citizens can lose their Fourth Amendment rights and can be the subject of warrantless searches and seizures.

Part of her argument centered on her claim that the individuals charged over the protest “stopped along the way in order to arm themselves with weapons.”

Stephan listed the weapons: Mace, pepper spray, a wooden chair, a stick, and a full alcoholic

Stephan did not respond to multiple requests for comment from the Daily Dot.

The conspiracy theory that Holocaust survivor George Soros funds antifa to foment unrest in the nation has long been a canard of the far-right

This isn’t the first time Stephan has thrown the book at left-wing protestors, either. Stephan charged Black Lives Matter activist Denzel Draughn with 19 felonies and held him on $750,000 bail in August 2020. His charges, like the antifa defendants, centered around protest crimes including the use of mace. Draughn was eventually acquitted of all the charges by a jury. In an interview with CBS 8, Draughn said, “The jurors who stopped to talk to me said they saw through the state’s lies and that meant a lot to me.”

The deputy DA assigned to this case, William Hopkins, tackled this case with an attitude of antagonism toward the defendants, filing a motion regulating the release of discovery, to which the court agreed, hampering defense lawyers.

Hopkins claimed defendants would use information released to them to commit further violence, in a document filed with the court in December 2021.

“As a Deputy District Attorney, through the investigation of this case I have come across several gigabytes of data that the ANTIFA cells, to which the Defendents belong, have collected on persons they have had any sort of disagreement with … I know that members of ANTIFA specifically use this information to harass, attack, and stalk victims in order to socially, psychologically, and physically harm their targets. I am aware that several of the defendants’ and their affiliates have engaged in this type of behavior within their respective ANTIFA cells.”

Although he refers to the movement as having “cells” multiple times, Hopkins provided no clear evidence that the case defendants knew each other, but still tamped down discovery over a fear that information would be provided to other members of antifa and that it would “endanger … the safety of witnesses and victims in the present case.”

The indictments laid down for people participating in the Jan. 9 protest include charges ranging from instigating confrontations, using mace, using a stun gun, throwing chairs, and fighting.

According to the indictments, “On or about January 2, 2021, Antifa supporters posted on social media calling for ‘counterprotesting’ and direct action in response to a scheduled political demonstration in Pacific Beach on January 9, 2021. Defendants and other uncharged co-conspirators confirmed their support and participation by showing up in Pacific Beach on January 9, 2021, dressed in black clothing, and armed with weapons and protective gear, before participating in the violence described below.”

It says a defendant initiated an attack by shouting: “Proud Boy Killa!”

Despite Congress having certified the 2020 election at the D.C. riot, ardent Trump supporters still organized “Stop the Steal” rallies across the country.

The mood was tense on Jan. 9, 2021, just three days after the far-right stormed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to overturn the 2020 election. At least six people who were present in D.C., and who have been active at protests throughout Southern California, were on-site

One of them was a Proud Boy, Albert Nunez, who runs the camera for right-wing streamer Jess Weber. Weber is known for posting a video at the Capitol on Jan. 6 while holding the riot shield of Capitol Police. Others were members of the group New Patriot Wave, whose logo appeared on the event flyers, and who can be seen in videos throughout the day.

By early morning a large group of counter-protesters was occupying the pier where the rally was scheduled to take place. And as small groups of Trump supporters showed up, they were confronted and chased away.

Eventually, these confrontations escalated and multiple fights, which included the use of pepper spray, broke out.

At one point a mob of Trump supporters surrounded and assaulted a counter-protester in an alley. Nunez posted the video on his Telegram account with the caption “San Diego KO of ANTIFA leader at Pacific Beach.”

But when the initial charges hit, Stephan stated in a press release, “Video evidence analysis shows that overwhelmingly the violence in this incident was perpetrated by the Antifa affiliates and was not a mutual fray with both sides crossing out of lawful First Amendment expression into riot and violence.”

Not one far-right protester was charged that day.

Included in the court filings is an order for the alleged victims of the acts by alleged antifa members to release their medical records to the court, filed on April 18, 2022. Not all of the names were redacted when the Daily Dot acquired these documents from the court clerk. On June 2, however, the judge sealed them.

One of the alleged victims is identified in the documents as Ryan Luke and he can be seen in video near the counter-protesters with a large knife. He is an ex-Pacific Beach Guardian Angel. The Guardian Angels is an organization formed in New York in the 1970s to run citizen-led safety patrols on the subways. Many view them as a vigilante group.

Police event logs even have him walking around with a knife at about 2:26pm: “Male w/knife. WML [white male] Black hoodie, brown pants,” reads the description.

In an additional video from the day, Luke can be seen confronting homeless activist Amy Zamudio. Zamudio told the Daily Dot that he has been violent with the unhoused population there on more than one occasion, noting that the “local Guardian Angels even kicked him out because he is so rogue.”

Another is identified as John Cocozza who appears alongside Luke in the same video.

Their altercation, described as Attack 5 in one the indictment, starts by stating that defendant Jeremy White pointed out Luke to other co-conspirators. The indictment makes no mention of the knife. It goes on to describe a scene in which Luke and Cocozza are surrounded and assaulted with tear gas and a stick and in which Luke’s bike is vandalized.

The original indictment lists 68 different overt acts by the protesters charged that day, including 12 different citations for putting on black clothes. It also details charges such as swinging a skateboard, using tasers, and two different instances of someone chucking a Twisted Tea.

But the story of these charges doesn’t begin on Jan. 9.

On Oct. 31, 2020, the San Diego Police Department arrested six individuals for conspiracy to commit a crime, among other lesser charges, at a small protest in front of police headquarters.

The protest was centered on justice for Jose Castro Gutierrez, who was shot and killed by an officer while experiencing a mental health crisis. The protest escalated when a metal barrier separating the police from the protesters fell over, falling toward protesters and not the police, according to multiple eyewitnesses. There does not appear to be any public video available of the event and the police body-worn camera footage has been sealed by a court protective order.

Two of the individuals arrested that day were Jesse Cannon and his partner Leah Madbak.

Cannon is also a defendant in the current Jan. 9 antifa case.

While recalling the incident, Madbak told the Daily Dot, “One officer pointed at Jesse and our friend and said ’10-16 those two.'” 10-16 can be the police code for picking up a prisoner.

“Jesse ran away from the police although they gave no commands,” Madbak said. “An officer chased Jesse and he tripped onto his back falling on top of him. Several officers dogpiled him. I stood frozen when I was suddenly shoved to the ground, landing on my wrist. An officer ripped my mask off and screamed at me. Another officer handcuffed me and took me to a police vehicle where I was searched. I watched another officer force a DNA swab on another man who was arrested. They shoved the swab in his mouth, grabbing his jaw forcefully.”

The Jan. 9 indictments said that Cannon has previously “provided” a DNA sample.

According to Cannon, back at the station, he was sat in a chair while multiple officers watched a doxing video of him created by popular San Diego right-wing blogger Roger Ogden, who once threatened a BLM activist with pepper spray.

It seems that the officers did a superficial internet search on Cannon while he was in custody. While watching the video, one of the officers exclaimed, “Oh, this one’s ANTIFA.”

Cannon had multiple injuries following the incident.

The conspiracy to commit a crime charges for October 2020 were eventually dropped while other lesser charges remained. But the October incident appeared fresh on the police’s mind, as they mentioned they were investigating Cannon in an arrest warrant for one of the suspects on Jan. 9.

Cannon seems to be a regular target of police scrutiny. Madbak told the Daily Dot, “The police knew of Jesse’s former affiliation with a local cop watch group and have targeted him for it.” Cannon said he hasn’t been a volunteer with this cop watch group for quite some time.

In February 2021, Cannon was detained and handcuffed on the Pacific Beach boardwalk for several minutes before being released. A passer-by filmed the incident while making inquiries of one of the officers. In the video, the officer claims they are looking for protesters that vandalized property at the Jan. 9 protest. Cannon was eventually released.

On March 25, 2021, the San Diego Police Department pulled Cannon and Madbak over while they were out running errands. Police searched her vehicle thoroughly, at one point holding up and photographing a sweatshirt that says “cop watcher” on it

Later that same day they also ransacked Cannon’s home, Madbak’s home, and Cannon’s father’s home under a sealed warrant. Police confiscated cameras, phones, and electronic equipment. Police additionally confiscated two legal firearms from Cannon’s father’s home

On April 7, 2021, San Diego Police Officer Colton Hofrichter left a voicemail for Cannon on Madbak’s phone, since they had confiscated Cannon’s phone in the raid. Hofrichter wanted to set up a meeting to serve Cannon with a gun violence restraining order. Yet, the police had already confiscated his guns in the raid and Cannon has no known gang affiliation or history of domestic violence.

Cannon and Madbak were also the subject of San Diego’s efforts to get to the bottom of who ran the @sdagainstfash Twitter account, which the DA said was used to organize the protest.

As part of the protective order limiting discovery, the Deputy DA, William Hopkins, alleged that Madbak and Cannon are administrators for the @sdagainstfash account, which was also the subject of a Twitter federal subpoena.

“I am also aware that Jesse Cannon is or was romantically involved with Leah Madbak. I have seen evidence that both Cannon and Madbak run and or have administrative privileges for several ANTIFA based social media accounts, specifically SDagainstFash, sdreportingcollective, S.N.A.I.L. and R.A.B.I.D,” Hopkins said in his protective order.

Daily Dot has spoken with the @sdagainstfash account owner, who denied Cannon and Madbak’s involvement.

However, Hopkins was worried that the account would be used to harass victims in this case, namely Proud Boys, who are often the subject of posts by antifascist Twitter accounts.

“I know recently social media accounts associated with several of the defendants posted pictures of people they believed to be the victims in this case just last week on December 8, 2021, in an apparent attempt to intimidate or dissuade them from testifying,” Hopkins stated in his Declaration in Support of the Protective Order.

That post that Hopkins was referring to that doxed “victims” came in response to a thread from Antifa Watch, which was posting itself about the case. The post by @sdagainstfash involves public video clips that the DA referenced in initial charging documents.

The first defendant to be arrested after the Jan. 9 protest was Brian Lightfoot. Lightfoot was originally charged in May, with the remaining defendants charged in the December hearing.

At that time, the district attorney requested $1 million in bail, an amount on par with crimes such as first-degree murder.

At his bail hearing, on May 25, 2021, the state argued that Lightfoot was a potential flight risk because he had access to firearms, had a fundraiser for his bail, had posed in photos in front of expensive cars, and had hired an attorney that resides in Northern California. Included as proof were photos of Lightfoot posing with toy guns.

The judge ultimately decided that the bail request was excessive and released Lightfoot on his own recognizance with no bail posted, highlighting the contrast between what the San Diego District Attorney’s office thinks and what the court sees reasonable.

It will be a struggle that plays out this summer, as the trials for the defendants is scheduled to commence on Aug. 8, 2022.
