What loss? You've got empty warehouses, businesses and office buildings all over the place....... you determine the current fair market value and offer the owners a fair price.

Govt doesn't seem to have a problem when a highway goes thru or a rail line? right?  How about just plain condemned properties? For instance, we had a large mall in our downtown area........the local govt was stupid enough to have gotten involved in first the taking of existing small businesses to get that mall built.......and then a few decades later, when it all fell apart, getting stuck with the $Losses involved. They never bothered building a new skyscraper with affordable housing, though. They did build several homeless shelters which now house mostly people that aren't even from the area. They're brilliant. 

Talk to the landowners that consider it a loss.

Fair pricing
I’ve noticed this year the “San Diego Fair” (I grew up knowing it as the Del Mar fair) only has the pricing for admission and parking posted on their website. I don’t see pricing for concerts, shows, games or rides. Anyone been this year and can share your experience with the pricing? I’ve seen some food on Instagram like funnel cakes for $15, pizza for $49.99 and ice cream cones for $12. Yikes

I went last night, it was $50 for 40 tickets. The ski lift was 5 tix/person one way, the Ferris wheel was 4 tix/person, and one shot at a basketball game was also 4 tix.

Nachos were 9 bucks, Oreo cookies and ice cream was 11, and a can of Coors light was 10.

Also be forewarned, it took 2 hours to leave the parking lot last night and the fair wasn’t even closed yet…

I just drove past yet another new strip mall getting built and wondered "WTF could they possibly be doing there? There's tons of places empty and shorthanded around here as it is."

I vaguely remember that one......... more recent was the guy from that Doc called Tread that went off on his local town and the big business that shafted him, right?

It reminds me of anti-gun types who mention tanks and cannons as something regular people weren't ever allowed to own. They must not check into these sorta things? Private merchant ships hundreds of years ago had cannons to protect their property/haul.

Had been in Desert Storm so he knew how to drive a tank. 
Prior to this they did not lock them at the National Guard branch in Clairemont so he just hopped in one & drove it away.

He did not own the damned thing, dude.

He was pissed the city wouldn't give him a claim to mine gold in the back yard of the house he rented in Clairemont.

I think his drug of choice was meth

So far this year, San Diego police have made eight times as many arrests for encroachment and illegal lodging — infractions largely directed at homeless people — compared to the same time last year, according to data inewsource obtained.

In fact, the number of arrests for these crimes so far has exceeded the total for all of last year.

Why this matters
Estimates show San Diego has at least 4,800 homeless people. Mayor Todd Gloria said solving homelessness is the city’s top priority.

This is the result of Mayor Todd Gloria’s latest push for “progressive enforcement,” which penalizes homeless people for not accepting shelter. The city has taken this approach to get people off the street and into a shelter system that is regularly 93% occupied, with the ultimate goal of moving people into permanent housing.

As long as shelter beds are available, police will continue enforcing laws that prohibit homeless people from blocking a sidewalk or sleeping somewhere they shouldn’t, Gloria said during a Monday press conference.

“If they don’t want to use them, it’s a free country, I understand that,” he said. “But it’s not without consequences.”

On the other hand, advocates have argued, and research has found, this approach isn’t effective.

Arrests and citations for these crimes are nowhere near pre-pandemic levels, but this action is coming at a time when experts are bracing for the latest surge in COVID-19 cases, and not long after San Diego was given the title of least affordable housing market in the nation.

The number of people living on the streets of San Diego has increased roughly 10% in two years — up from at least 2,283 in 2020 to 2,494 earlier this year, according to the homeless census, which is considered an undercount.

Gloria acknowledged the housing crisis, saying part of the problem is “the rent’s too damn high,” and that many people living on the streets aren’t there due to illness or bad choices, but because they “are simply poor.”

“I cannot let folks take advantage of San Diego’s deep (well) of compassion for this issue and wave away the help that they’re offered and the services that we’re providing, because sometimes they’re more comfortable on the streets and don’t want to take action to change their situation,” Gloria said.

inewsource reporters went to the East Village on multiple mornings in May and June to witness police interact with homeless people while city employees cleaned their encampments. Officers arrested six unhoused people for encroachment — an offense that was originally intended for trash cans blocking a sidewalk.

This week, a 59-year-old woman who didn’t want to be identified had received her third citation for encroachment in the past eight months. Police told her they would come back tomorrow and every day for the foreseeable future, and they would take her to jail if they see her again, she said.

“I don’t know where else to go,” she said. “It’s aggressive forcing us to go into the shelter.”

‘Reframing criminalization’
Records show arrests for encroachment and illegal lodging have been ramping up since the beginning of the year.

More than half of the arrests this year involve encroachment, the data shows. Arrests for illegal lodging have also increased — 17 arrests through June 3 compared to 16 in all of last year. Close to 90% of all arrests take place before noon, and the vast majority occur downtown.

Following media reports of a growing encampment on Sports Arena Boulevard in February, city officials restarted their progressive enforcement efforts.

They don't want to be in shelters because they don't want to follow rules. No drugs or alcohol.

We need mental institutions where people can be put against their will for their safety because that's where it started. Not being able to keep the mentally ill in institutions against their will.

It's like asking criminals if they want to be in jail. Of course not. The institutions made them take their meds which were not fun like meth or pot.

San Diego approves 37-story downtown apartment tower, with almost no parking, near Petco Park - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Few things from someone who lives near to this:

Approved doesn't mean it's going to be built anytime soon, or anything close to what is currently approved (see 2)

Anyone whose view will be impacted by this will be far more impacted by the 7 & Market ~43 story tower that is also fully approved and was meant to start construction in 2020 (kinda sad about this tbh, it looked really cool and the renders have an interesting park thing at the bottom)

There are several other towers under construction, or recently completed that have plenty of parking for residents so this will be an interesting experiment, not a new norm if it gets completed in this state.

Anyone expecting sub 2k rent is gonna be disappointed, I'd guess starting at 2.5k for the smallest and lowest units assuming it finishes ~2024.
