Press Connects | Press & Sun-Bulletin Eviction moratorium has ended, but there aren’t enough homes. Share your story.Emily Barnes, Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin Mon, January 24, 2022, 7:54 AM New York state's eviction moratorium ended Jan. 15, opening the door for landlords to once again evict tenants for nonpayment of rent. Now, Binghamton residents behind on rent or utility payments need to apply for financial assistance through the city. But if evicted, they may find themselves unable to find somewhere else to live. Are you facing eviction or having trouble looking for affordable and safe housing? Scroll to the bottom of this story or click here to connect with us. Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham said that since the beginning of the pandemic, the city has allocated $1.2 million in federal CARES Act funds for direct housing assistance to residents to prevent eviction and homelessness. Of that $1.2 million, $620,000 remains, Kraham said, and can go only to low- and moderate-income tenants affected by the pandemic. However, housing and homelessness advocate Rebecca Rathmell said the current need for safe, affordable rental housing heavily outweighs the availability. "There are about 4,600 extremely low-income renter households in Binghamton and less than 2,000 deeply affordable apartments," Rathmell said. "With local emergency shelters at capacity and thousands facing displacement now that the eviction moratorium has expired, millions in rental assistance is useless if there are, in fact, no homes to be rented." Kraham is encouraging residents currently behind on rent or facing eviction to call 211, a program funded through the United Way, to start the application process. Those who have previously received assistance through these funds are eligible to apply a second time.
Seems like a good way to start solving this issue would be to eliminate the presence of all non-US citizens for starters.
But that's too heartless & mean to non-US citizens? As opposed to being too heartless & mean to US citizens?

I'm sure that by "non-US citizens" you are talking about "illegals" because NYC has one of the highest populations of legal non-US citizens in the entire country what with the UN and several (dozen... hundred) multinational corporations and all.
What I'm wondering is why you don't want to convict the landlords for renting to illegals in the first place and not notifying immigration?

Illegals would certainly have a higher priority for removal.......as they shouldn't even be here. But if it's truly about looking after our own citizens, then why wouldn't all foreigners be on the table? I'd guess YOU would be on the chopping block if the CCP decided it needed to best look after it's own people, right?
I've suggested tossing out the entire UN in the past and converting their properties into homeless/affordable rentals.
So I'm supposed to be on board with using the Govt/Courts to convict people renting out their property to renters? when the businessman's hands are tied when it comes to what sorta questions they can ask from the beginning? And that's the very same Govt/courts that have blatantly looked the other way for decades while this problem grew into the tens of millions? In favor of who? Agriculture businesses? Teachers Unions? Govt Social Workers?
That just seems an odd time to sit up, take notice and demand something be done about it, if you're asking me

That is such a flippant reply. So there's +20 million living out in canyons or tents?
here's a piece that made me think of these many discussions.......

1. And probably never got counted in your article because they wouldn't want to get caught.
2. I'm sure you have.
3. Yes. YOU the virulent anti-illegal immigrant partisan should be on board with convicting anyone who makes it easier and more desirable for the illegals who come to the US. You abhor "sanctuary cities" I presume, so it would only make sense that you would abhor anyone involved in harboring or giving work to illegals.
Of course, that would be my assumption if you weren't a racist who would rather punish the brown people for coming here rather than the white people who enable them.
But you are a racist as evidenced by this and many other posts on the subject.

Maybe I should have made an analogy using Teachers (Employers benefiting) and School Administrators (the Govt looking the other way) instead? Would you be more upset with the teachers or the administration?
My nearby city IS a sanctuary city. We've got agriculture and meat processing. And Americans believe themselves too good for that kinda work.
Again with the 'brown people' cracks? That's really sorta pathetic you even think that's the case.......but whatever. It's kinda doubley funny to me given you're the oddball sticking out in your current location.Or it could be I'm just the naive and foolish one that actually believed the US had made great strides in that regard?
Think what you like. Similar to the politics, it's not like anything will change anyone's mind anyway.

WORKERSThey are described as workers. Their family stays in their village so they aren't getting welfareSo some get papers, others don't. That one farm has paid them $5 million over 3 yrs. How many Americans are doing that work these days? It's hard work for crap wages. So it's better to plant avocados to sell to Americans? 5 cents per item? Wow. He can support his family that way. He's actually supporting his family unlike people here who leave to live their lives with new lovers. He wants better for his kids, not crap for himself. Education has value?! Imagine that! She ENJOYS life in her village? HOW?! Yeah, I could have told you 20 yrs ago Mexico encourages the migrants so they don't have to support all the villages with services & such. They were printing maps of where the water was on this side of the border so people wouldn't die on the trip over. But our employers want them. $5 million from one farm? The guy earns $7500 in a season? Could most Americans survive on $7500 May thru October? Stop bitching about the migrants & bitch about McDonalds & Walmart hiring them. Americans will work those jobs.

Who ever said millions of them weren't WORKERS? That's why most come here.......for better paying jobs. Jobs Americans won't do. But there's still a ton of welfare being handed out......don't be silly. From the free school and SNAP benefits?
Nobody ever said they weren't doing a better job of supporting their families back home either. Does that reflect badly on them? OR America and it's useless or irresponsible types?
Of course education has value. It's costing tax payers here about $15,000 a head these days.
Most people have a nostalgic attachment to their homeland.
WHY wouldn't Mexico encourage it if our Govt does, too? It's in their best interest. I get that just as much as I do why people flood to the US.
Whether it's our politicians.......or the employers........should it matter IF it isn't in the best long term interests of US citizens?
I believe that at least once or twice in the last decade or so I've earned less than $7,500 May thru October. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)
Americans won't work those jobs UNTIL they're faced with actual deprivation if they don't get to work.

Americans won't work those jobs UNTIL they're faced with actual deprivation if they don't get to work. So there was a time Mexico wanted the workers back to work their fields, but the workers could make more in the US. So even with the deportations, illegal immigration continued BECAUSE EMPLOYERS KEPT HIRING THEM. Like I keep telling you, you have to stop the people buying the labor. You said you work part time, not full time. I didn't make $9000/yr until I got my government job. 1979 & 1980 were less than $5000/yr. Dude, Americans won't do that farm stuff. When I was a teen in the 70s most of the kids refused because their allowance was more than they made picking fruit

This sorta strikes me like the drugs argument. Employers need employees, if Americans won't do it, they'll look elsewhere. Now, if the Govt were truly doing it's job.....you know what would have happened a long time ago? Wages would have gone up naturally.
So in effect, the Govt is promoting low stagnant wages.
40 years ago? I was more referring to about 10. Y'know......when they had forced the Minimum up to $7.25
Once again, when the handouts are more than the wages.......why would anyone wanna work? See what we've done to the youth?

... Good God, it's always the Government’s fault? Not that Americans LOVE cheap & paying minimum wage to farm labor would mean paying more for fruits & vegetables than Americans are willing to pay? Like $10 for a head of lettuce? You know Americans love their all-you-can-eat for cheap.

What is the Govt but a reflection of the people that elected it?
Americans love paying a little for a lot. Not tough to understand. We're fine with child/slave labor overseas, too......so long as we don't have to see it.
About the only people I ever see that don't mind paying more for things are the extremely wealthy that opt for brand names or those on EBT who figure they'll just get more funds in the future.
