Democrat re-elected by a landslide in Pennsylvania – even though he’s dead

Win by longtime state representative Tony DeLuca, who died last month, triggers special election that will be held on a later date

A longtime Pennsylvania state representative was re-elected in a landslide – even though he died last month.

Democrat Anthony “Tony” DeLuca, Pennsylvania’s longest-serving state representative, was the choice in more than 85% of votes cast.

DeLuca, 85, died on 9 October from lymphoma, a disease he had twice previously fended off.

By the time of his death it was too late to change the ballot or put forth another candidate for his seat. While his opponent, Green candidate Queonia “Zarah” Livingston, accounted for more than 14% of the vote, DeLuca’s victory has triggered a special election that will be held on a later date.

“While we’re incredibly saddened by the loss of Representative Tony DeLuca, we are proud to see the voters continue to show their confidence in him and his commitment to Democratic values by re-electing him posthumously,” the Pennsylvania House Democratic campaign committee said in a tweet.

“A special election will follow soon.”

This isn’t the first time a candidate has won an election posthumously. In 2018, brothel owner Dennis Hof won a seat in the Nevada senate as a Republican despite dying the month before. Unlike in Pennsylvania, however, his victory did not trigger a special election: under Nevada state law, county officials could appoint a Republican to take Hof’s place for the entire term.

Some blame low voter awareness of current events – current events such as whether the candidate is alive or not – for why candidates get elected posthumously, while others suggest voters are simply choosing the name they’re most familiar with.

If the dead can vote for your candidates, it's only fitting some of your candidates are dead, too

I hate the mentality.
Its the same that conservative talk radio was pushing on Duncan Hunter who was on trial for misuse of campaign funds (used to vacation & fly his kid's pet rabbit around the country. Oh, & to cheat on his wife). Vote for him. If he is convicted, there would be a.special election. Sure, that costs a couple million, but it's only taxpayer money.

So better to vote for the dead guy than the other party.
Let the taxpayer pick up the bill.

My question is the guy knew he had cancer. Why the hell was his 85 yr old ass running? Why didn't he bow out & endorse a younger replacement?

I'll just say it again.........it seems to me the height of corruption that all these $Millions, $Billions get spent on elections........rather than just directly fixing the problems they insist politicians will fix after getting elected.

Well, it is interesting it sounds like they learned a bit.

McConnell was saying they need to soften their message to appeal to more independents, that their hard line scared some of those away.

Shumer also said it for the democrats. 

Then the Senate passed that protection of gay marriage in a bipartisan move.

I think that's something the Dems could have gotten passed under Trump........they just didn't wanna give him any good press. Just ask Dave Ruben
