They seem to be under the delusion impression that Democrats and leftists view their politicians the same way they view Trump.

This is what I don't get.

I don't know anyone who held Obama or holds Biden in the level of idolatry many Trump fans seem to hold Trump.

I think it's stupid the racist gorilla comments I used to see all the time in the yahoo comments aimed at the Obamas, particularly Michelle, but I can't say I interacted with anyone who saw Obama as close to Christ like those paintings one sees of Trump with Christ.

I don't think we worship our guys like your side did with Donnie.

In the midst of a meditation on “Bidenism,” if there is any such thing, Washington Post columnist Perry Bacon Jr. offered this provocative thought: “Ultimately, I wonder whether we have simply entered an era in which presidents are always going to be unpopular.”

It really is worth thinking about. Joe Biden had a brief period of relative popularity for the first few months of his presidency, but his job-approval rating went underwater last summer and seems to have stabilized in the low 40s. Donald Trump never reached 46 percent in his job-approval ratings, according to the FiveThirtyEight averages, and for the most part stayed about where Biden is today. Barack Obama struggled to stay popular even though he took office in 2008 with what looked like a strong popular mandate. According to Gallup (the best source for comparing presidential approval ratings over time), from March 2010 until March 2016, Obama’s approval rating was regularly below 50 percent, except for a brief season of relative popularity felicitously centered on the 2012 elections. His average Gallup approval rating was 47.9 percent, the lowest since Jimmy Carter’s presidency. George W. Bush’s average rating was just a bit higher at 49.7 percent, though that’s misleading; the insane spike in approval he got immediately after 9/11 (reaching 90 percent) skewed his numbers.

So in the 21st century, presidents have indeed not been very popular compared with their late-20th-century predecessors. Gallup averages show Bill Clinton at 55.1 percent, George H.W. Bush at 60.9 percent, and Ronald Reagan at 52.8 percent.

Why are presidents becoming more unpopular? Polarization is one obvious factor; partisans increasingly dislike opposing-party presidents regardless of who they are or what they actually do in office. There is a silver lining to that particular problem. Partisans who aren’t happy with their party’s president may still vote for their team in a midterm:

Biden’s support has plunged among all demographic groups, including Democrats, Black voters and voters under 40. But those three groups in particular don’t include a lot of conservatives. It is possible that many voters who are lukewarm about Biden will ultimately still vote Democratic.

And, for that matter, they may vote for Biden in 2024 if he runs again, especially if his opponent is Trump or some other MAGA demagogue like Ron DeSantis. Trump punched above his favorability numbers against the marginally less unpopular Hillary Clinton in 2016 and modestly overperformed his approval ratings in 2020.

But there’s another anchor dragging down presidential popularity: Self-identified independents have regularly disliked both Trump and Biden more than the public at large has. As long as they are (relatively speaking) disengaged from politics and mistrustful toward politicians, independents may rarely if ever find a president they can wholeheartedly favor, even if conditions in the country are sunny.

And if conditions are perceived as cloudy to stormy, as they are right now (despite low unemployment, high economic growth, and a world in which American troops are not — thus far — deeply entangled in a foreign war), no president is going to be surfing a wave of high approval. There may be, as Bacon notes, specific things about Biden that have disappointed some Democrats and a lot of independents while enraging Republicans. But in general, being unpopular could now just be a part of the job.

Cowher blames the 24 hour news cycle, but honestly, every President has been unpopular at times. Look at Lincoln. The south didn't much like him, now did they?

Trump held those rallies, but he wasn't that popular overall throughout his presidency. The GOP loved him, but the Democrats hated him & the independents were split.

Remember, as low as Biden is in polling now, he still is riding above Trump’s numbers on the same day in office. He's close to Truman at this point in their terms.

The President is supposed to be mostly unseen. We don't need to be reminded he's there every damned day.

That's how it was in the 60s & 70s. Yes, even the 80s & 90s.

You didn't live your political party 24/7.
You voted in the election,  then spent probably the next 3 yrs (because who votes in the midterms, right?) Living your life, working, paying bills, being a cog in the system that is the USA.

So no.
The average American didn't go to political rallies. 
Hell,  our voter percentages hover closer to 50-60% so a bunch of Americans don't bother voting.

Forget what you saw: a brain region detects when you are about to think of an unwanted memory and alerts other regions to suppress it, according to research recently published in Journal of Neuroscience.

Crespo García et al. measured participants’ brain activity with both EEG and fMRI while they completed a memory task.


The participants memorized sets of words (i.e., gate and train) and were asked to either recall a cue word’s pair (see gate, think about train) or only focus on the cue word (see gate, only think about gate).

During proactive memory suppression, activity increased in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a brain region involved in cognitive control, within the first 500 milliseconds of the task.

The ACC relayed information to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which then inhibited activity in the hippocampus, a key region for memory recall.

The activity levels in the ACC and DLPFC remained low for the rest of the trial, a sign of success — the memory was stopped early enough so no more suppression was needed.


If the memory was not suppressed in time, the ACC generated a reactive alarm, increasing its activity to signal to the DLPFC to stop the intrusion.

Anterior Cingulate Cortex Signals the Need to Control Intrusive Thoughts During Motivated Forgetting

How do people limit awareness of unwanted memories? When such memories intrude, a control process engages the right DLPFC (rDLPFC) to inhibit hippocampal activity and stop retrieval. It remains unknown how the need for control is detected, and whether control operates proactively to prevent unwelcome memories from being retrieved, or responds reactively, to counteract intrusions.

We hypothesized that dorsal ACC (dACC) detects the emergence of an unwanted trace in awareness and transmits the need for inhibitory control to rDLPFC. During a memory suppression task, we measured in humans (both sexes) trial-by-trial variations in dACC’s theta power and N2 amplitude, two EEG markers thought to reflect the need for control.

With simultaneous EEG-fMRI recordings, we tracked interactions between dACC, rDLPFC and hippocampus during suppression.


We found a clear role of dACC in detecting the need for memory control and upregulating prefrontal inhibition. Importantly, we identified distinct early (350-400 ms) and late (500-700 ms) dACC contributions, suggesting both proactive control prior to recollection, and reactive control in response to intrusions.

Stronger early activity was associated with reduced hippocampal activity and diminished BOLD signal in dACC and rDLPFC, suggesting that pre-empting retrieval reduced overall control demands.

In the later window, dACC activity was larger and effective connectivity analyses revealed robust communication from dACC to rDLPFC and from rDLPFC to hippocampus, tied to successful forgetting

Together, our findings support a model in which dACC detects the emergence of unwanted content, triggering top-down inhibitory control, and in which rDLPFC countermands intruding thoughts that penetrate awareness.

Significance Statement:

Preventing unwanted memories from coming to mind is an adaptive ability of humans. This ability relies on inhibitory control processes in the prefrontal cortex to modulate hippocampal retrieval processes.

How and when reminders to unwelcome memories come to trigger prefrontal control mechanisms remains unknown. Here we acquired neuroimaging data with both high spatial and temporal resolution as participants suppressed specific memories.


We found that the anterior cingulate cortex detects the need for memory control, responding both proactively to early warning signals about unwelcome content and reactively to intrusive thoughts themselves.

When unwanted traces emerge in awareness, anterior cingulate communicates with prefrontal cortex and triggers top-down inhibitory control over the hippocampus through specific neural oscillatory networks

We forget bad stuff all the time.

I went to the hospital in the afternoon on Halloween because my water broke. After a couple hours, it wasn't progressing so the doctor induced labor. Finally the next morning I was fully dilated so I could start pushing around 6am. My kid was born around 9am so 3 hours of pushing. 
I remember almost none of it. 
Just suddenly they decided to bring in a squat bar, set it up, & boom, the room was full of people & my kid was born. 

Because if I remembered it all, I probably wouldn't have been open to another kid. (Which is a different issue. When I wanted another kid, my husband didn't, so we just never agreed on a second kid)

A clerk one imagines is rude is nothing compared to say, cutting off a finger or falling 100 ft & surviving.

Not inconvenience 

Lone my 3 fricken hours of labor on do not recall. Bits, like my husband offering me an ice cube or them bringing in that squat bar, but how there were.that many people in there or what the discussion was, I have no idea. 


There's a picture in the article of a dog bone like milk bone. So you remember you had a dog. You remember it died, but maybe you found it all mangled on the side of the road after it got hit. That part of the memory likely fades/gets blocked. You don't think the dog is still alive.
