College students of course favor government's eviction moratorium — then get schooled by landlords, others who know its real priceDave Urbanski August 12, 2021 In the wake of the eviction moratorium extension by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Campus Reform visited college students in Washington, D.C., to get their opinions on renters living for free on properties they don't own while landlords still have to pay mortgages. Given that just about all college students are renters, generally speaking, you can imagine that they were in favor of the the eviction moratorium put in place due to business shutdowns over the COVID-19 pandemic. "People don't deserve to be thrown out of their homes, especially in a time like this," one student told the outlet. Another student said the eviction moratorium is a "basic moral thing" and a matter of "forgiveness" when income has vanished for so many people. "It seems like a good thing," another student said of the eviction moratorium. In fairness, the students interviewed, by and large, also said it isn't fair that property owners are stuck footing the bills in the absence of rent — however, a number of them said that's where the government has to step in and cover financially for property owners. Indeed, when they were asked how they'd feel if they were in property owners' shoes, the students admitted that they'd be "upset" and "very pissed" and "irritated" and "bummed out." A splash of cold water Commenters on the below video showing the interviews with the D.C. college students tore into the students' responses: "I am a landlord. My tenant hasn't payed rent In a year. This is literally my life," one commenter wrote. "It's frustrating. I might lose the house to taxes because the government didn't stop charging me taxes on the houses when they decided I couldn't rent successfully anymore."
"'No one should be kicked out of their home.' Umm it's not YOUR house if you're renting it," another commenter shot back.
"'People don't deserve to be thrown out of their homes.' They are renting and not paying said rent," another commenter observed. "This is why people don't listen to youth. They are too readily to give advice when they in the same sentence say I don't know any details of the issue."
"People lose their home because they can't pay the mortgage but the people living in the rented homes live there for free. ... Dems at their best!" another commenter said.
"It's funny watching these people who believe they are going to 'fight the man' and 'put truth to power' cry and beg for more government control," another commenter declared. "Absolute buffoons."
The most bizarre thing to me in all of this is WHY didn't the Govt suspend all Mortgages and Taxes at the same time as Rent? Freeze it all if that's what you're gonna do. If many landlords end up losing their homes, won't that just create yet another glut of Bank owned homes that nobody is paying for or doing the upkeep on?
Also, with this insane 'American Rescue Plan' that doling out money for everyone with kids.......how can so many people be behind on their Rent?

Maybe they spent it on booze and hookers.
I don't know. Are you suggesting they should have been FORCED to spend it on rent?
Did you get a stimulus check, Abs? Did you send it back because you were doing just fine by following all of your common sense financial planning?
Or did you keep it and spend it on your wife's trip to Vegas?

At least it got put back into the economy.
BTW, how much have people received in stimulus checks in the US?
How long have some of these folks been out of work?
I figure that even without a calculator, you can do your guzinta's and realize that there are way more months after the end of the money.

How does any of that become the landlord's problem?

Didn't the landlord get his stimulus check?
Don't get me wrong, Abbey. I think provisions should be made for the landlords as well.
The only people that should be hurting are the banks

THAT's the middle ground I would hope we can ALL agree on.
Just saw a meme this morning on how delinquent taxes for landlords will result in the seizure of their property, but renters get a complete pass? So you can see how the Govt has really screwed the pooch with their moves.......or maybe it was all on purpose?
And the banks wouldn't really be hurting, they just would be facing a suspension of that one area of their revenue streams. After all the bail outs, I don't think that'd be too much to ask.

I'm sure banks pay lots of money into PACs and donate to a lot of campaigns... regardless of party.
That's why they are termed "too big to fail."

So donating to politicians works?
It creates a way to be treated more equally than others.
If politics weren't all about so much money, then it might be possible to get big money out. But it's the name of the game.

my point is that despite decades of examples of the US Govt making things worse........you still believe it's an improvement over the past?
I just watched a video on a steep decline in home ownership. You know what they labeled as a primary cause? Higher levels of student loan debt than ever before.
"Thanks for all the help getting educated Govt."

"Thanks for all the help getting educated Govt." You think the government sets the prices on private colleges?
You gotta give up that demon Pepsi. It's rotting your brain as well as your teeth.

"Out of the 5,300 institutions in the USA, there are 1,626 public colleges, 1,687 private nonprofit schools, and 985 for-profit schools."
Looks like a pretty varied distribution. If the public schools were so much cheaper, why wouldn't everyone opt for them instead? Especially the eventual politicians (and by extension their kids)
Never! I've picked my vice and I'll ride it til I die. So, you smoke 'em if you got 'em

And I will defend your right to puff til you die!
Though I'm curious.......how're the costs over there by comparison? Near us the pack of smokes can be more than $10 right now.
I can remember a ton of adults years ago claiming "If they ever get to $3/pack, I'm quitting." That didn't seem to come to pass.
And the Govt still loves it's taxes.......and subsidies.

Different brands: different prices
Different levels of nicotine: different prices
I've seen packs as low as 1 RMB (about $0.15) - but they taste like they were made from the floor scrapings from the drying shed... sawdust and all - up to 1,000 RMB (about $150) - and those really don't taste all that good (to me) either.
My current brand costs 11 RMB a pack... about $1.63.
