Washington Examiner Oregon governor signs bill ending reading and math proficiency requirements for graduationKaelan Deese Tue, August 10, 2021, 10:41 AM Oregon Gov. Kate Brown privately signed a bill last month ending the requirement for high school students to prove proficiency in reading, writing, and arithmetic before graduation. Brown, a Democrat, did not hold a public signing or issue a press release regarding the passing of Senate Bill 744 on July 14, and the measure, which was approved by lawmakers in June, was not added into the state's legislative database until more than two weeks later on July 29, an unusually quiet approach to enacting legislation, according to the Oregonian. Secretary of the Senate Lori Brocker's office is responsible for updating the legislative database, and a staffer tasked with dealing with the governor's office was experiencing medical issues during the 15-day time frame it took the database to be updated with the recently signed law, Brocker said.

Some things you left out:
It's only for three years and it's a response to the disruption to the educational system caused by Covid.
It has nothing to do with standardized testing.
It doesn't remove graduation requirements.
It's actually going to be revisited next year.

There's no excuse for lowering the bar after it's been lowered so much already.
Minimum requirements are just that.

Move to Oregon and remake things in your own image. You have that freedom.
I'm sure all of your parental, economic, and educational experience will be invaluable.

You think it's completely useless.
And yet most of the stuff you're supporting has been failing for decades? You had to leave the US entirely for the conditions that all of the govt 'experts' left you with?

No. I think you and your experience are completely useless in this situation.
What am I supporting, Abs?
And please be sure to include quotes of me saying "I support...."
Otherwise you're just putting words into my mouth.

I am putting words in your mouth.
One thing I've noticed about the most talented leftists, like Obama for instance, is they have the ability to support all sorts of things......without ever actually stating their specific support. The best and most talented debaters can argue from either side of the plate. I'm not very impressed with that skill set.
It's not that much different than the assumptions you make about my views on race because I happen to support fiscal conservatism, smaller govt and actual US border security.

I'm very clear in what I support and what I don't. The fact that you can't quote me supporting the things you say that I support is because I don't or because you think that making shit up about me somehow is a "gotcha."
Also, I'm not a "leftist," just a liberal... and very conservative in my approach to liberalism.

You've done precisely that about me for months.
I'm a hardcore fiscal conservative......and likely more socially liberal than most. It comes down to size and cost of govt. That's pretty much it.
Otherwise I'm all for people doing whatever they want on their own time & dime.......and that's before, during and after whatever activities they get up to.

"On their own dime"
They don't have a dime. Their opportunities to get a dime are restricted. They don't have the opportunity to go as many places to spend their dime. And when they get there, someone charges them a quarter.
You don't need to be "woke" Abs, but you do need to wake up.

Sorry, gotta disagree.
I see 'poor' people finding the funds for all sorts of unnecessary things.
I see middle class people living paycheck to paycheck, too.
Conspicuous consumption.

What do you want to FORCE them to live without?
The only FORCE I'm interested in is having people assume responsibility for their poor choices. THAT's it.
Like I didn't wanna bail out the banks or the Big Auto companies, I don't want to bail out Americans again and again and again. Don't Feed the Animals. It makes them dependent.

You understand the concept that the choices and actions of one person will necessarily limit the actions and opportunities of another, right?
Well, when a whole bunch of people (Group A) purposely (or due to "tradition" for lack of a better word) limit the options of another group (B), I don't think it's fair to place the onus on the latter for making bad choices. They had few (if any) good choices to make in the first place.
You're going to say, "There's always a way! You just have look for it!"
Which is kinda the point. Why do they have to go looking for it when you can just walk out your door and have it sitting on your doorstep?
"I had to work hard and overcome blah blah blah...."
They have to work many times harder than you just to get to the point where you began to work hard.
You can't tie a person in chains, throw them in the water then say that they failed in their personal responsibility to learn how to swim.

I do understand that. White Man's Burden was a flick I've seen, too. Roots, as well.
This could be yet another of those arguments over what works, what doesn't, what is anecdotal and what is applicable for most. Are all of the people you would classify as oppressed that made it just plain lucky?
Sitting on my doorstep? I've hustled and worked many a low paying gig, multiples at a time even. Again, I have to wonder if our respective environments growing up were that different? If maybe your large city which has a reputation that it does was really that different than my location?
With the rarity of black people in my area years ago, I'd guess the closest I could maybe come to your experiences might be the nearby Reservation occupants? Lots of generational hostilities between the locals in that department. But still, I'm sure my views would be deemed by you as not nearly as complex and understanding as yours. I was hoping for a waving emoji, rather than a beer clinker? but it may or may not work in this regard.

1. Lucky? Luck is about being prepared for an opportunity, but it's also about being able to recognize it, and trust that it truly is an opportunity and not a scam. It's also about self-confidence. When people are constantly torn down and scammed and lied to, it's easy to see how some truly talented people might still miss the boat.
2. I've done it too. I've also noticed that the white boss chose me for work from among dozens of other applicants, most of whom weren't white. I needed the money and my privilege was working for me, so I exercised it. Your personal work ethic doesn't really mean shit when you know the white boss is going to choose the white applicant almost every time.
3. Really? That's hard to believe. I mean... we were so kind to give them less land to worry about... fewer mouths to feed... nice warm blankets with cholera... whiskey...
4. I'll have to look for waving emoji....

Kinder than the earlier Europeans that gave them slavery and diseases that wiped out the majority of them before the late 1700s? or kinder than they were to one another back in the days of the Aztecs and Mayans?
Don't forget all the modern conveniences that have since come about.

You're more harsh than that 1619 chick Those 1619 folks seem to forget that slavery already existed in the New World for about 130 years before the White Lion landed.
