The Preamble to the US Constitution reads: This is not an enumeration of rights but a simple statement of purpose. It seems to me that it has laid out 6 areas that are the concern of the government:
1. Form a more perfect union
2. Establish Justice
3. Insure domestic Tranquility
4. Provide for the common defence
5. Promote the general Welfare
6. Secure the Blessings of Liberty
Based on these areas of concern, please enumerate what services the government should provide. Although I have used the Preamble to the US Constitution, that in no way should preclude non-Americans from answering, just stick to the 6 areas listed above.

1. Find the better way for 50 States to get along peacefully and cooperatively.
2. Basics of law enforcement/imprisonment and courts for settling civil disputes.
3. Acting as an impartial referee with laws and regulations to insure that most everyone applies the Golden Rules in their interactions with others.
4. Border protection first and foremost and a degree of military readiness in the case of being attacked by a hostile foreign force. A fraction of it's current levels.
5. Impart/dispense proven information and facts to best allow for people to make sound economic decisions.
6. Honor the Constitution by giving all US citizens the freedoms and right to life, liberty and the pursuit.......and just as importantly, keep the Govt as minimal as possible to avoid those inevitable infringements.

I haven't listed anything here that's original or new. At one point or another, all of these functions were fulfilled by governments - federal, state or local - from both sides of the political aisle in my country. Some of these essential services have now been privatized - in part or in whole - and I think that's one of the main reasons why my country isn't as good as it used to be.

Was that how it always was? No That's all I'm saying.
I thought the main reason was all of those gringo convicts that got dumped there by England?

I understand that at one point, "undesirables" were also transported to the colonies in America as well. Please try again... and please try to make more sense.

When both of our countries were founded, there weren't nearly as many things provided by Govt.
That's why it's such a crappy comparison to make whenever things like immigration, border security and taxes come up these days.
Same sentiment, though.
Every group of people has undesirables....... I happen to think it's pretty universal.
It's a sort of Quigley Down Under joke, dude.

It's a sort of Quigley Down Under joke, dude. 1. Of course not... circumstances changed. 2. What crappy comparison are you referring to and what does it have to do with "immigration, border security and taxes"? 3. This is true... America has Republicans... and Republicans have Trump supporters. 4. I only saw that film once... about 30 years ago... and it wasn't that memorable. So what joke are you referring to?

1. They do..........and they really don't. Are modern day humans really any different than humans of the past?
2. People love pointing out the flood of immigrants to the US, for instance in the 15th-19th centuries.........when there wasn't nearly as much Govt or people or costs being passed along to others.......and comparing it to modern day laws and regulations that now exist.
3. Can't think of any on the Left, huh?
4.

1. I'm not talking about the evolution of Humans, just their civilization and technology... and that has changed dramatically. 2. And this is relevant how? 3. They all seem fine to me. Goff, Bob, Paul, Kev... 4. I'll check it out later.

1. Evolved to be more dependent than ever?
2. It's relevant to give context to WHY some people might view the job of Govt so differently than yourself.....and vicey-versey

1. Many things that didn't exist or weren't possible before now are. 2. Different people grew up in different countries under different conditions and with different expectations. Different people also can have different belief systems.

2. Acceptance and tolerance. Follow the money, though.

1. What services perform this function?
2. Describe "basic." Do you mean men with pitchforks dragging you to a room where some dude passes sentence at gunpoint?
3. You want to FORCE people to behave a certain way?
4. Expand TSA? You realize that our biggest borders are airports, right?
5. What if no one turns on that channel or listens to the advice? If your mom said, "Stop climbing that old tree! You might fall and hurt yourself" and then you didn't listen, fell and broke your arm, are you saying it would be OK for mom to then just let you live with a broken arm simply because you didn't listen?
5. What services perform this function?

1. If you want to be a member of society and enjoy its benefits, you should also be willing to contribute to it. When I buy goods or services, I pay tax on them... and I have no problem with this. 2. Always follow the money.

2. Tell that to college kids pursuing useless degrees. (Which tax payers will end up paying for, too)

1. 99.9% of what? I pay 10% GST on most of my purchases... although some essential products are tax exempt. 2. Education is never useless.
