Culture Wars How a University of Iowa Reply-All Email Became Ground Zero for the Cancel Culture Wars A student at the College of Dentistry claimed he was facing expulsion for being conservative. Iowa lawmakers leapt to his defense. Now, Michael Brase is one of the most platformed names in right-wing politics—while students of color feel cowed, exhausted, and ignored.

“Once someone pulls out the Oxford English Dictionary,” said one College of Dentistry student of color, “you know it’s a trap.”
It seems some people really hate word definitions.

Gotta cancel something!

Shouldn't "reverse cancel culture" be a situation when everything is allowed?

It's hard to get on board with forgiving student loans when the only class anyone at college seems to take is "Activism 101"

It's hard to get on board with forgiving student loans when the only class anyone at college seems to take is "Activism 101" But you do know that only about .0009% of classes are Activism 101. Universities do teach things people we need to know since magic doesn’t work anymore. I mean you can pray that a vaccine for Covid-19 or Ebola will magically appear, or hope a very popular former game show host can pull one out of his genius ass, but pack a lunch, man, because you’ll be praying and hoping for very a long time.

Well... what you say was certainly true when I went to college in the mid to late 80's. I honestly can't remember a single protest during the 6 years I was there. But these days it seems kids plan their class schedule around the protest schedule.

It's sorta like how so many plan their home furnishings or Christmas shopping around the latest cop shooting.

I'm all for protests, civil ones, but can you get the Fuck out the road?
Thanks!

It's hard to get on board with forgiving student loans when the only class anyone at college seems to take is "Activism 101" Are you sure it's not just a case of the squeaky wheel getting all of the attention and oil? Exactly what's the percentage of activists among the current global population of tertiary students? Activism has played an important role in society, both historically and to this day... and not just in America. Consider the protests surrounding civil rights, racial justice and various armed conflicts around the globe. Besides, a free education is probably one of the best investments any country can make for its own future. A better educated population acquires or creates better paying jobs, in turn pays more tax, which in turn pays for the next generation to do the same, leading to substantial societal benefits for the entire nation. PS - Sorry about that. Despite decades of experience, I've not yet managed to beat the last vestiges of hope and positivity out of myself...

I think the 'investment' has really failed in the ROI dept

If so, it wasn't done properly.

That's the most common reply regarding failed collectivism.

I would hope so. If anything fails, there's always the chance it wasn't done properly. Of course, if you have a reverse of course every 4 to 8 years and a change of direction and policy, is it any wonder? Normally, the number one goal of those with power is to retain that power. Everything else is secondary.

Agreed, especially on that last line.
But the important thing to remember is most of these wonderful ideas sound great, even written down on paper...........it's just when put into practice and actually involving real live humans? That's where the inevitable and perpetual failure comes in.

Then nothing will ever work and the future is doomed, so why keep talking about it as if your way will be any more successful than somebody else' way?
I guess there's still some optimism left in you yet....

Just because activism gets results doesn't mean that more activism will always garner more results in a shorter period of time.
That said, my comment is more about students focusing their energy on the studying than the activism since that's what the student loans were for in the first place.
"I spent 20 hours a week studying and 30 hours a week protesting. I took easy classes but it still took me 5 years to get a 4-year degree. Now I can't earn enough money to pay back the loans because the straight, white, capitalist patriarchy has systematically made it hard for people with degrees in 'LatinX Transgender Literature of the 19th Century' to make $150k a year!"

The only real difference in our views is the levels of voluntary versus mandatory........and the size of the bureaucracy required to facilitate both of those versions.

I think you see waaaay more "mandatory" in what I say than I do... and more bureaucracy to boot.

1. No, but I was just making the point that not all activism is bad and that it can have a potentially positive outcome. 2. That's why I asked about the level of activism amongst students. I'm sure there's a lot of it going about, but we only ever seem to hear from the ones involved in it. What about the really radical students, who only go to school to get an education? 3. I suppose if they put in the appropriate amount of time studying, how they spend their "free time" is up to them. Partying, protesting or preparing for exams...
