Just because activism gets results doesn't mean that more activism will always garner more results in a shorter period of time.
That said, my comment is more about students focusing their energy on the studying than the activism since that's what the student loans were for in the first place.
"I spent 20 hours a week studying and 30 hours a week protesting. I took easy classes but it still took me 5 years to get a 4-year degree. Now I can't earn enough money to pay back the loans because the straight, white, capitalist patriarchy has systematically made it hard for people with degrees in 'LatinX Transgender Literature of the 19th Century' to make $150k a year!"
1. No, but I was just making the point that not all activism is bad and that it can have a potentially positive outcome. 2. That's why I asked about the level of activism amongst students. I'm sure there's a lot of it going about, but we only ever seem to hear from the ones involved in it. What about the really radical students, who only go to school to get an education? 3. I suppose if they put in the appropriate amount of time studying, how they spend their "free time" is up to them. Partying, protesting or preparing for exams... And Abbey thinks I'm the liberal one....   |

But you do know that only about .0009% of classes are Activism 101. Universities do teach things people we need to know since magic doesn’t work anymore. I mean you can pray that a vaccine for Covid-19 or Ebola will magically appear, or hope a very popular former game show host can pull one out of his genius ass, but pack a lunch, man, because you’ll be praying and hoping for very a long time. Well... what you say was certainly true when I went to college in the mid to late 80's. I honestly can't remember a single protest during the 6 years I was there. But these days it seems kids plan their class schedule around the protest schedule.
There are 20 million US college students in one form of higher education or another. I don't think that many kids are protesting compared to the total student population. |
