Jimmy John Liautaud: Obama Stopped Jimmy John’s ‘Dead in Our Tracks,’ but Donald Trump Stood with UsMatt Perdie / Breitbart News Alana Mastrangelo 23 Dec 20218 Jimmy John’s restaurant chain founder Jimmy John Liautaud told Breitbart News editor-in-chief Alex Marlow during an exclusive interview on Sunday he was “totally naïve to politics” and how politicians could stop his company “dead in our tracks” until former President Barack Obama changed the labor laws. “The Obama administration changed the labor laws,” Liautaud told Marlow at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona. “When the labor laws changed, the model changed. We ran the model for 3o years, they changed the numbers, and the model didn’t work the same.” “I was totally naïve to politics,” Liautaud added. “I ran the business for 30 years, gave my managers 25 percent of the profit if the store, had no turnover, I had 3,000 stores just about open, and 3,000 in the pipeline, and all of the sudden, the laws changed, and it literally stopped us dead in our tracks.” The Jimmy John’s founder added that he believed “Obama was a well-intended man, but he didn’t do his research.” “He didn’t call me up, and say, ‘Jimmy, how can we get more money to the people?'” Liautaud said, before pointing out the difference between Obama and former President Donald Trump. “You know what President Trump did when COVID hit? I got a call from the White House [asking about] will I be on the Small Business Council,” Liautaud said. “He wanted to know every day, what were the biggest issues in the industry today, and what’s the solution.” Liautaud added that “every day, I would call into the White House. I had access to everybody in the industry, so I could find out what everybody needed.” “And [Trump] received it — he really wanted to know from the people who knew how to fly the airplane, not from people that read about flying the airplane,” Liautaud said. “That’s the difference between the administrations.” “So, I never knew to be aware of that people are going to take it from you before you know it,” Liautaud said of government. The Jimmy John’s founder said that while he never thought he would be speaking at a political conference, “I want people to have the same dream that I had. I want people to have the same opportunity that I had.” “I graduated second to last in my class, and I’m a billionaire in America,” Liautaud said. “That’s why I’m here, because I want America to be America, because we didn’t get here with mediocrity.” “We got here by kicking ass, and with greatness,” Liautaud affirmed. Which labor laws got changed? I never heard of the chain so I had to look it up and there's nothing in the article about anything causing any sort of problems for the chain other than the owner's big game hunting and his insistence that employees sign non-compete agreements. That last one is a real dick move but whatever. Also, nothing in his bio says anything about being part of any "small business council"... probably because businesses worth a couple billion dollars aren't actually "small."

I'm gonna guess it was 1. the definition of Employee vs independent contractors and 2. the ACA's new rules about anyone working more than 28 Hours/wk being a full time employee.
As a franchisee pusher, he wanted to insure that people he had brought in and spent the good time and money on training wouldn't just turn around and open a sandwich shop within their shop's territory. There was also something about Employers with more than 10-20 employees in the newest laws. So some Mom & Pop investors who had just started up their 2nd or 3rd store might be stuck in court fighting the Feds and their favored Law Firms. I've heard of similar activity for years in Big Cities with shakedown artists/lawyers that go around and demand payouts from businesses that have not upgraded their properties to the latest Govt rules & regulations (Because of $Cost to do so, of course)
His big gripe seemed to be the Govt getting in the way of small people trying to 'live the American Dream' and growing a business of their own. THAT's what he was more interested in after he'd achieved a certain level of success. I knew of the restaurant chain, but never heard him talk before tonite on an episode of Tucker.

1. Don't guess. The guy's making an accusation. Why isn't he being specific?
2. He was making even the sandwich makers and delivery drivers sign the non-competes. If it were just franchisees, no one would have a problem with it.
3. Except he hadn't been "small" for decades and it's really not fair to compare the economic playing field of the early/mid-80's with today.
As for his comment about being "naive" about politicians, I call bullshit. Read up on his dad.
And I can't help but hear the words "big game hunter" and know exactly how he came to Donnie's attention....

2. I may seem overkill........but I kinda get it. It was just a simple formula for a simple sandwich shop. It's not like a McDonalds that takes already being wealthy to even open a location.
3. You musta missed the part where he graduated 2nd from the bottom of his class in a school for underperforming kids? I saw his Dad was wealthy.........but I also so he told his son, go into the Army or start a business of your own with this $25,000 I'll give you. If the business failed, he had to repay the loan by then going into the Army.
He did mention he got to know the Trumps and liked them. As far as big game......... it seemed like mostly turkey and pheasant he liked to hunt on his own farmland these days.

Like making employees sign agreements to not work at other sub shops.after they leave the employment of his joint? Non disclosure contract sort of mentality? How about that shot of him naked on the shark corpse?

That'd seem silly to me. Any competitors that wanted to get inside info could simply stop in and observe while they eat a sandwich or two.
I missed nude shots. Where'd you find that?
There was just an article on some typical beach goers riding/killing a dolphin that had gotten into shallow water

That did kinda look like him, huh? And?
found this though.........
Original founder no longer owns Jimmy John’s
Liautaud is no longer the owner of Jimmy John’s. The sandwich shop is now owned by Inspire Brands. Inspire is one of the largest restaurant companies in the country, with over 11,100 restaurants under its umbrella, according to the company's website.
More:Fact check: Restaurant chains don't directly donate to Trump's reelection campaign
Inspire completed its acquisition of Jimmy Johns on Oct. 18, 2019, per a news release from the company. As part of the acquisition, Liautaud stepped down as Chairman and is an adviser to the board, according to the Associated Press.
Liautaud did not respond to requests for comment by USA TODAY.
Our rating: Partly false
We rate the claim that the owner of Jimmy John’s uses his money from the sandwich chain to kill endangered animals as PARTLY FALSE, as some of it was not supported by our research. The sandwich shop’s founder, Jimmy John Liautaud, no longer owns the sandwich chain. Liautaud did hunt big game, but has not done so for years.
So this was just more of this witch hunt cancel culture trying to find and shame anyone associated with Trump? Some of you people

So if he's not a business owner, why is fox talking to him?
cuz he's a $Billionaire entrepreneur with tales to tell about how some politicians negatively affect business
He even told the story of how the Illinois community he lived in harassed him so much because he wasn't an Obama supporter, he had to move his kids to another school.

Does Starbucks have an non-compete clause for their workers? IF NOT, what'd be so tough about employees opening up coffee shops nearby and beating them at their own game?

1. Don't just drop it. It's the whole basis of your thread. Answer the fucking question.
2. Again... counter help and delivery drivers
3. He went to a private prep school that has one of the best Scholastic Bowl teams in the country. It's NOT for "underperforming children."
Again, his dad was an established entrepreneur who certainly told his son about politicians and business considering his dad founded a business school and an entire institute dedicated to instructing CEOs... so I call bullshit on Jimmy John's claims of naivete.
4. "According to Liautaud, he used to hunt big game in Africa on legally organized safaris, but he no longer does."

I Bing/Googled and quickly found several articles detailing lawsuits brought by the Govt in an apparent targeting of his business..........cuz this is what it done with Govt .......especially nowadays.
2. As I stated to merh in another reply........it does seem overkill, I agree........but then again we're talking about a simple sandwich shop with hardly any equipment and supplies involved. So anyone could do it for very little investment.

4. "According to Liautaud, he used to hunt big game in Africa on legally organized safaris, but he no longer does."
Does that contradict what I posted?
Personally, I don't take too much issue with the big game trophy hunters ........as long as it's the ones that pay huge $Fees to do so which is coordinated by the reserves and parks that look after that kind of wild life. THEY determine which animals may be shot after they're no longer useful to the long term survival of those specific animals. The money pays for the conservation of the rest of them.
I'm not even a hunter myself in any way. I'm surrounded by hunters and fishers of all sorts, though. It's very much big businesses........but even more so a lifestyle in the country/suburbs.

Who's the community organizer supposed to be? Obama? GMAFB.
Actually merh posted a photo of an ad campaign for someone that currently labels themself that.
Yes, that was always a cut on Obama as he was a community organizer with no real successes to point to then or since in that area.
But this idea that community organizing is the way to go forward? Always the non-stop agenda pushing of collectivists? When everything they want requires taking money away from others first?
Keep bashing business and you'll see what happens to economies and revenues. Not not that many politicians or organizers would have a clue about running successful businesses.

Yeah, Obama wasn't "just" a community organizer. You know that of course. Are business owners supposed to be put on a pedestal and deferred to? Do they at least have to be good business owners?

1. 1st one was a lawsuit brought against a franchisee, not the parent company.
2nd and 3rd ones were about the non-competes
None of these has anything to do with your/his assertion that Obama's changing of labor laws had any effect on his business.
2. You sort of hit the nail on the head and squashed your defense of this guy: It's a fucking sandwich shop. Maybe I was ahead of the curve, but I learned how to put meat and cheese between two slices of bread when I was about 5 years old.
The non-competes served only one purpose: binding unskilled workers to his employ. Once they worked for him, they couldn't go get a job at a McDonald's, Subway, Burger King, etc. The agreements essentially said, "Work for me or get to digging ditches, because you can't work for another restaurant."
3. I see that you don't want to argue the "naivete" thing anymore. Good. You lost that one... hard. Little side note though... in a response to Merh, you mention that he sold the chain to Inspire foods in 2019 but you missed the part where he sold the majority stake back in 2016... right around the time the franchisee was having trouble with the NLRB and he was dealing with the non-compete issue. That's a pretty savvy move for someone so naive....
4. Ditto talking about big game hunting.
