Serial 'jogger rapist' to be released from Oregon prison

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon serial rapist is set to be released from prison in mid-December after serving nearly 36 years behind bars, almost all of his maximum sentence.

Richard Gillmore, arrested in 1986 and called the “jogger rapist” because he staked out victims as he ran by their homes, admitted to raping nine girls in the Portland area in the 1970s and 80s but was only convicted in one case because of the statute of limitations. In 1987, a jury found him guilty of raping 13-year-old Tiffany Edens, his last known victim, in December 1986.

The Associated Press generally does not name people who have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly. Edens has spoken out about the assault and recently wrote on social media that she received a voicemail in August from the state’s Victim Information and Notification Service telling her of his impending release.

“I have been slowly processing the reality of it all,” she wrote.

The Oregonian, citing prison officials, reported that Gillmore was transferred in August from Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla to the minimum-security Columbia River Correctional Institution in Portland to help him prepare for his re-entry into the community. He will be 63 at the time of his release in December.

KOIN, which first reported his upcoming release, said Gillmore will remain under supervision until 2034 and could be sent back to prison if he violates his parole.

A judge in the Edens case sentenced Gillmore to at least 30 years in prison with a 60-year maximum. But a parole board cut his sentence in half in 1988, the year after he was convicted.

Danielle Tudor, who has said she was a teenager when Gillmore raped her in 1979, has spoken out against his release.

"If he had been able to have been charged for all the rapes he committed, he’d never be getting out,” Tudor told KOIN.

Gillmore has been classified as a sex offender at the lowest risk of reoffending. He will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life due to his rape conviction, but the classification means the state and county aren’t required to notify surrounding residents that he’s living near them.

His victims are angered that Gillmore isn’t considered a high-risk sex offender, which would require notification to the community wherever he lives or moves.

The Oregonian reported that Tudor said she didn’t understand why he was being classified as a low-level sex offender.

“He was designated as a dangerous offender at trial,” Tudor said

Wouldn't want to stigmatize a man who raped 9 people, one as young as 13.

Actor Ray Buffer is facing accusations that he swiped comic books worth hundreds of dollars from a San Diego store that blasted out surveillance footage of the alleged theft.

Southern California Comics pointed the finger at Buffer, who appeared in the hit television shows “ER” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” for allegedly taking more than $600 worth of comics from the store. A Facebook post shows footage of a man inside the business who appears to take comics by concealing them under his shirt.

Southern California Comics owner Jamie Newbold told The Post on Sunday that after he put up a photo of an unidentified man on social media to warn other comic book stores about the possible thief, other businesses claimed the man was Buffer.

A Los Angeles comic business even sent Newbold footage of another apparent theft that occurred in its establishment showing the same person, he said.

Newbold said the possible crime against his store occurred last Tuesday and that he filed a police report with San Diego authorities Thursday. He provided The Post with a police report number and said he hopes the investigation into the incident ramps up this week.

He said at least six to seven comics were missing.

“This is Ray Buffer. Our camera captured him stealing comics by concealing them in his shirt,” Southern California Comics posted on Facebook. “We discovered the crime and watched the surveillance video until we saw this. We are sending all the info over to the police.”

Another incident involving the same man in Metropolis Comics in Los Angeles last month shows the co-owner, Alania Rice, confronting the man who appears to have comics tucked under his shirt, according to footage posted by Southern California Comics.

The owner orders him to leave, and as she turns her back, the man appears to pull comics from under his shirt and places them back on a table before walking toward the exit, footage shows.

Rice confirmed the incident to The Post Sunday. She also believes Buffer is the person in the footage based on comparing his appearance and the sound of his voice off their brief interaction to videos of him online.

The San Diego Police Department confirmed to The Post that a police report was filed about the theft at Southern California Comics. TMZ first reported the allegations.

No charges against Buffer have been reported.

“We offered him the choice of either returning our property (we know what he took because an earlier part of the video has him holding the books) or we turn it over to the law. He emailed us and claimed we are harassing him,” Southern California Comics said in the Facebook post.

Multiple outlets reportedly reached out to Buffer for comment but got no reply.

Buffer had very minor roles in single episodes of several television shows, including “CSI: Miami,” “Gilmore Girls” and “Cold Case,” according to his IMDb page.

Entertainment Weekly reported he recently played an uncredited Russian thug in the movie “Bullet Train” starring Brad Pitt.

I do not know Oregon law. Some states allow prisoners to vote from prison.

A Florida man is accused of killing his ex-wife when she stopped by his house to pick up some of her belongings, then incinerating her body after taking back her wedding band and engagement ring, according to the feds.

Days later, detectives say they found a human jawbone—with a tooth still attached—in a “burn pile” on his five-acre property.

The gruesome new details are revealed in a criminal complaint unsealed Tuesday in Tampa federal court, charging Ian Christopher Baunach with possession of 13 unregistered firearm silencers. Baunach, 43, was arraigned Monday on first-degree murder charges in the death of Katie Baunach, 39, along with charges including failure to report a death to the medical examiner and 12 counts of possession of controlled substances without a prescription, for a cache of steroids allegedly found in Baunach’s home.

Baunach remains in custody at the Hendry County Jail, according to booking records. He does not have a lawyer listed in court records, and was unable to be reached for comment on Tuesday. On social media, Baunach, an avid bodybuilder, claims to be an ex-Marine who attended Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.

The case against Baunach can be traced back to the morning of Sept. 30, when a friend of Katie’s reported her missing. Earlier in the month, Katie had applied for, and received, a restraining order against Baunach for allegedly abusing one of their two children, the federal complaint says. Last November, Baunach was arrested on charges of domestic battery by strangulation, and was released the same day on $25,000 bond, jail records show. Prosecutors did not pursue the case, and the charges were dropped in January 2022.

Katie left the estranged couple’s kids with a friend at around 9 p.m. on Sept. 29, according to the complaint. She told the unidentified friend that Baunach said she could come over to “retrieve some of her personal items,” and that she’d be back.

“This was the last time Katie Baunach was seen alive,” the complaint states.

The next day, sheriff’s deputies showed up at Baunach’s home to search for Katie. Officers saw her car parked in the driveway with her purse inside, according to the complaint. But Baunach wasn’t home, and the cops left.

They stopped by again a short time later, and noticed that Katie’s vehicle had been moved and was now parked on the street. Baunach was now at home, but the driveway gate was locked and an agitated Baunach wouldn’t let the deputies in, according to the sheriff’s office. So they applied for a warrant and entered Baunach’s residence at around 1 p.m., the complaint states.

Once inside, cops saw what they believed was evidence of a homicide, according to the complaint.

Detectives searched Baunach’s car, which was parked in the attached garage, and sprayed the trunk with luminol, which the complaint describes as “a chemical that reacts to the presence of blood by glowing blue.”

“The interior of Baunach’s vehicle trunk glowed blue after law enforcement applied the luminol,” according to the complaint.

A hallway connecting the garage with the house’s foyer showed “signs of a physical struggle,” the complaint continues. One of the walls seemed to be damaged, and officers saw exposed screws where a broken mirror had once been mounted.

“Law enforcement treated the area with luminol which again glowed blue showing the presence of blood in the previously described hallway,” the complaint goes on. “The luminol also reacted and on the wall adjacent to the office door and on the office door frame. Law enforcement discovered a large surface area on three different walls of the Premises which glowed blue when treated with luminol.”



In an adjacent home office, cops found a safe “which contained Katie Baunach’s wedding band and engagement ring,” which the feds say she had been wearing when she left her friend’s house the evening before. Officers also found an AR-15 upper receiver and 13 silencers in the safe, along with a Glock Model 27 .40 caliber pistol inside a plastic bag on a bookshelf, according to the complaint. There were three rifles and a shotgun in an attic above the garage, and Baunach had another .40 caliber Glock on his person, it says.

During a wider search of the property, cops “discovered the fragment of a human mandible with an intact tooth in a fresh burn pile, and discovered a blue fifty-gallon barrel near the burn pile which reeked of decaying flesh,” the complaint states. “Inside the blue fifty-gallon barrel, law enforcement discovered an additional human bone fragment. Law enforcement discovered other suspected human bone fragments in the area surrounding the burn pile.”

However, Baunach denied everything when confronted by police

He told detectives that Katie had contacted him a couple of nights earlier, saying she needed gas for her car. When she arrived, the two got into an argument “over another woman,” the complaint states. Baunach claimed he “did not want to argue,” and went to sleep. When he woke up, Katie was gone, Baunach insisted, saying that he then moved her car to the street.

Investigators told Baunach they discovered blood inside the trunk of his car, which he blamed on “groceries he had transported,” according to the complaint.

“When asked about the blood found inside the Premises, Baunach stated that he did not believe the officers,” it says, adding that Baunach blamed the broken mirror on having “bumped into it while walking down the hall.” Baunach also said Katie was not “actually a missing person,” and told cops they “did not have a body.”

Baunach owned up to possessing the silencers found in his home, but “disputed they were actually silencers,” according to the complaint.



As for any ill will towards his ex, the complaint says Baunach “admitted to being angry that Katie Baunach filed for and received a domestic violence injunction against him.”

Each federal count with which Baunach is charged carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. If convicted on the state charge of first-degree murder, Baunach faces life in prison or the death penalty.

In 1987, Hartman married former model and aspiring actress Brynn Omdahl (born Vicki Jo Omdahl, April 11, 1958 – May 28, 1998), having met her on a blind date the previous year. They had two children, Sean and Birgen Hartman. The marriage had difficulties; she was reportedly intimidated by his success and was frustrated that she could not find any on her own, although neither party wanted a divorce. She was reported to have been jealous and often verbally and/or physically abusive, even sending a letter to his ex-wife, threatening to "rip [Strain's] eyes out" if she spoke to him again. Hartman considered retiring to save the marriage.

Hartman tried to get Brynn acting roles, but she became progressively reliant on alcohol and narcotics, entering rehab several times. On multiple occasions, he removed their children from the household to stay with friends or family because of her drug- and alcohol-fueled outbursts. Because of his close friendship with SNL associate Jan Hooks, Brynn "joked" on occasion Hooks and Hartman were married "on some other level". Brynn had written threatening letters addressed to Hooks, warning her to not get close to her husband, but they appeared to have never even been sent, being discovered in her belongings following her death.

Stephen Root, Hartman's NewsRadio co-star, said few people knew "the real Phil Hartman", as he was "one of those people who never seemed to come out of character," but he nevertheless gave the impression of a family man who cared deeply for his children. Hartman befriended Joe Rogan during his time on NewsRadio and confided his marital problems to him. Rogan said that he encouraged Hartman to divorce Brynn five times, but "[Hartman] loved his kids and didn't want to leave".

Hartman stated in 1997 that, though a non-practicing Catholic, he displayed a sense of religiousness. In his spare time, he enjoyed driving, flying, sailing, marksmanship, and playing the guitar.

On May 27, 1998, Hartman's wife, Brynn, visited the Italian restaurant Buca di Beppo in Encino, California with producer and writer Christine Zander, who said she was "in a good frame of mind"; they had drinks. After returning home, Brynn had a "heated" argument with Phil, after which he went to bed. She entered his bedroom some time before 3:00 a.m. PDT on May 28, 1998 and, as he slept, fatally shot him once between the eyes, once in the throat, and once in the upper chest with a Charter Arms .38 caliber handgun. He was 49 years old. She was taking Zoloft, had been drinking alcohol, and had recently used cocaine.

Brynn then drove to the home of her friend Ron Douglas and confessed to the killing, but he did not believe her. They drove back to the house in separate cars, and she called another friend and confessed a second time. On seeing Hartman's body, Douglas called 9-1-1 at 6:20 a.m. Police arrived and escorted Douglas and the Hartmans' two children from the premises, by which time Brynn had locked herself in the bedroom. Shortly afterward, she committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot.

The police stated Hartman's death was caused by "domestic discord" between the couple. A friend said Brynn "had trouble controlling her anger ... She got attention by losing her temper". A neighbor of the Hartmans told a CNN reporter that the couple had marital problems. Yet actor Steve Guttenberg said they had been "a very happy couple, and they always had the appearance of being well-balanced".

Brynn's brother, Gregory Omdahl, filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 1999 against both Pfizer, the manufacturer of Zoloft, and her child's psychiatrist, Arthur Sorosky, who had provided samples of the antidepressant to Brynn. Phil Hartman's friend and former SNL colleague Jon Lovitz has accused Hartman's then NewsRadio co-star Andy Dick of reintroducing Brynn to cocaine, causing her to relapse and suffer a nervous breakdown. Dick claims to have known nothing of her condition. Lovitz later said he no longer blamed Dick for Hartman's murder, but in 2006, Lovitz claimed Dick approached him at a restaurant and said, "I put the Phil Hartman hex on you; you're the next one to die." Lovitz then had him ejected from the restaurant. The following year at the Laugh Factory comedy club in Los Angeles, Lovitz and Dick had another argument, with Lovitz slamming Dick's head into the bar. Dick asserted he was not at fault in relation to Hartman's death.

‘Crime Den’: 22 Charged in Alleged Drug Trafficking at Mike’s Market in Mountain View

Charges in a 221-count grand jury indictment were announced Monday regarding a Mountain View grocery store that officials say became a haven for alleged violent and drug-related criminal activity.

Police and prosecutors say employees at Mike’s Market on Ocean View Boulevard were working directly with gang members to facilitate drug sales, which were funded through major food assistance benefit fraud allegedly taking place at the store.

Deputy District Attorney Robert Hickey said that amid an investigation that began this summer into criminal activity at the market, “What became clear was that this business was not a neighborhood grocery store at all. Instead, it was a place where employees were committing massive fraud, stealing nearly $2 million in food assistance benefits for themselves, money meant to help food-insecure residents.”

Prosecutors say people used their food assistance cards at the store and a portion of the money they received went to the market employees. The rest was used to buy drugs from gang members at the store.

Hickey said this scheme was exemplified during one day this summer in which more than $58,000 in food assistance transactions were made, “yet there’s very little evidence of any groceries being sold that day.” Hickey said the scheme sent food assistance dollars into the hands of gang members, who used that money “to buy guns, which were used to perpetuate the cycle of violence.”

San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said police have received “countless calls from the community” over the years to address crime in and around the market, including three homicides that happened over the past year within a block of the store.

Police have also received more than 1,000 calls over the past two years for matters within 500 feet of the market, Nisleit said.

The indictment charges 22 people, nearly all of whom were arraigned Monday. According to Hickey, the targets of the investigation were drug dealers and store employees, not “those who were held hostage by their addiction.”

The prosecutor said, “The goal of this operation was to rid a neighborhood of a crime den and hopefully, provide an opportunity for an actual market that can provide healthy food to the community. We will not stand by while businesses partner with gang members to perpetuate violence in our community.”
