Expecting to ever be totally satisfied is not very realistic. But I'm doing pretty well in that department despite the glaring problems in this country. Mostly because I've succeeded at isolating myself from most of them.

How small should a government of 350 million people and 3,531,905 square miles be? Can small government handle our GDP%? And what would a small government look like? No more social security or Medicare? Smaller army? Bigger police force? What are the plans for millions living in poverty with health insurance? What do we do about inter and intrastate commerce?

Being dedicated to “small government” is also collectivism because it is based on an unproven ideology that small governments are automatically better and more freeing, but name one small government that isn’t also despotic and authoritarian? Most police states are small government.

I hardly think the size of the country matters when a greta deal of it is federal land that is unoccupied. They should be selling off most of that anyway to pay off the Debt.

Cut the military by at least 75%         If there's enough to pay for UHC after selling off land and cutting the military......fine.

Tell those millions to get their heads out of their asses

Allow all 50 States to decide for themselves.........with an overall general rules at the federal level. 

Let's keep it simple...... I don't think ANYONE should be hit up for more than 20% in taxes. Once you've taxed the wealthy 20%, the middle class 15% and everyone below that 10%........ let me know what $Dollar amount that is for Revenue. And THAT's how big your government can be. Plenty of things would get cut if they were held to that budgetary standard.

The residents of Colorado Springs undertook a radical experiment in government. Here’s what they got.

Colorado Springs has always leaned hard on its reputation for natural beauty. An hour’s drive south of Denver, it sits at the base of the Rocky Mountains’ southern range and features two of the state’s top tourist destinations: the ancient sandstone rock formations known as Garden of the Gods, and Pikes Peak, the 14,000-foot summit visible from nearly every street corner. It’s also a staunchly Republican city—headquarters of the politically active Christian group Focus on the Family (Colorado Springs is nicknamed “the Evangelical Vatican”) and the fourth most conservative city in America, according to a recent study. It’s a right-wing counterweight to liberal Boulder, just a couple of hours north, along the Front Range.

It was its jut-jawed conservatism that not that long ago made the city’s local government a brief national fixation. During the recession, like nearly every other city in America, Colorado Springs’ revenue—heavily dependent on sales tax—plunged. Faced with massive shortfalls, the city’s leaders began slashing. Gone were weekend bus service and nine buses.

Out went some police officers along with three of the department’s helicopters, which were auctioned online. Trash cans vanished from city parks, because when you cut 75 percent of the parks’ budget, one of the things you lose is someone to empty the garbage. For a city that was founded when a wealthy industrialist planted 10,000 trees on a shadeless prairie, the suddenly sparse watering of the city’s grassy lawns was a profound and dire statement of retreat.

To fill a $28 million budget hole, Colorado Springs’ political leaders—who until that point might have been described by most voters as fiscal conservatives—proposed tripling property taxes. Nearly two-thirds of voters said no. In response, city officials (some would say almost petulantly) turned off one out of every three street lights. That’s when people started paying attention to a city that seemed to be conducting a real-time experiment in fiscal self-starvation. But that was just the prelude. The city wasn’t content simply to reject a tax increase. Voters wanted something genuinely different, so a little more than a year later, they elected a real estate entrepreneur as mayor who promised a radical break from politics as usual.

For a city, like the country at large, that was hurting economically, Steve Bach seemed like a man with an answer. What he promised sounded radically simple: Wasteful government is the root of the pain, and if you just run government like the best businesses, the pain will go away. Easy. Because he had never held office and because he actually had been a successful entrepreneur, people were inclined to believe he really could reinvent the way a city was governed.

So Donnie wasn't the first.

The city’s experiment was fascinating because it offered a chance to observe some of the most extreme conservative principles in action in a real-world laboratory. Producers from “60 Minutes” flew out to talk with the town’s leaders. The New York Times found a woman in a dark trailer park pawning her flat screen TV to buy a shotgun for protection. “This American Life” did a segment portraying Springs citizens as the ultimate anti-tax zealots, willing to pay $125 in a new “Adopt a Streetlight” program to illuminate their own neighborhoods, but not willing to spend the same to do so for the entire city. “I’ll take care of mine” was the gist of what one council member heard from a resident when she confronted him with this fact.

That’s where Colorado Springs was frozen in the consciousness of the country—a city determined to redefine the role of government, led by a sharp-elbowed businessman who didn’t care whom he offended along the way (not unlike a certain president). But it has been five years since “This American Life” packed up its mics. A lot has changed in that time, not least of which is that the local economy, which nearly drowned the city like a concrete block tied around its balance sheet, is buoyant once again. Sales tax revenue has made the books plump with surplus. Enough to turn those famous streetlights back on. Seven years after the experiment began, the verdict is in—and it’s not at all what its architects planned.

One of the lessons: There’s a real cost to saving money.

Take the streetlights. Turning them off had saved the city about $1.25 million. What had not made the national news stories was what had happened while those lights were off. Copper thieves, emboldened by the opportunity to work without fear of electrocution, had worked overtime scavenging wire. Some, the City Council learned, had even dressed up as utility workers and pried open the boxes at the base of streetlights in broad daylight. Keeping the lights off might have saved some money in the short term, but the cost to fix what had been stolen ran to some $5 million.

“Sometimes the best-laid plans don’t work out the way you’d hope,” says Merv Bennett, who served on the City Council at the time and asked officials at the utilities about whether the savings were real.

There has been a lot of this kind of reckoning over the past half-decade. From crisis came a desire for disruption. From disruption came, well, too much disruption. And from that came a full-circle return to professional politicians. Including one—a beloved mayor and respected bureaucrat who was short-listed to replace James Comey as FBI director—who is so persuasive he has gotten Colorado Springs residents to do something the outside world assumed they were not capable of: Five years after its moment in the spotlight, revenue is so high that the same voters who refused to keep the lights on have overwhelmingly approved ballot measures allowing the city to not only keep some of its extra tax money, but impose new taxes as well.

In the process, many residents of Colorado Springs, but especially the men and women most committed to making the city thrive, have learned a few other lessons. That perpetual chaos can be exhausting. That the value of the status quo rises with the budget’s bottom line. And that it helps when the people responsible for running the city are actually talking with one another. All it took was a few years running an experiment that everyone involved seems happy is over

Which is what we have... and it hasn't worked very well, which has required more general rules to be implemented at the federal level.

Enforcing those rules does require an increase in government size and expenditure... at the federal and local level.

Unfortunately, We the People keep proving time and time again that we are pretty much incapable of using common sense and therefore need rules to guide us.

Sadly, since We the People generally lack common sense, we keep electing people to make the rules who also don't have any common sense.

Coat that lack of common sense with a heaping helping of hypocrisy and you have a failing state, and I do think that the US is a failing state at this point.

Maybe you haven't noticed.......but the economy is really crashing already. Even the recent pay hikes can not keep up with the inflation by yet another 'expert' administration.

What do you see as the major problem? That we really don't make anything anymore? That we've relied on other countries for much of our products? Even the really important stuff, like medical supplies?

The paradigm shift is to revert to a more fiscally conservative mind set on the part of the people......and the Govt that reflects them.

I just heard on the radio that inflation has added about $300/month to the average household cost. And this is after it's been mentioned many times that the typical American couldn't come up with $400 in an emergency.

But they sure have a lot of non-necessities in their lives.

And when hasn’t some part of our economic not been failing for the past 50 years? During the boom 80s, tens of thousands of jobs went overseas. This was great for new entrepreneurs to find new revenue streams…you probably didn’t care if it didn’t hit you…but sucked for folks who lost their livelihood. The gaps between rich, middle class, and poor keep widening. The trillions in capital is no longer in circulation. Our economic moral foundation is based upon abject greed. 

We can try to keep our antiquated consumerism and fossil fuel economies going, keep buying shit we don’t need that is slowly poisoning us, keeping us unhealthy needing more and more healthcare, but expect more wars, more climate change forest fires and extreme weather events, more pandemics, more and shorter boom and bust cycles. All of these chronic problems will breed more confusion, anger, hatred, civil unrest, and blame. And will cost a lot trillions with little recoop to make up for it. 

Biden didn’t make Putin invade Ukraine which drove up the prices at the pump. But do you think any oil company is losing money?Nope, profits are up. So the investors in FF should hope the wars keep on going. Death and destruction are money makers for the smart, beautiful people.

And the typical family hasn’t been able to afford much for a long, long, long time. That’s why there is so much debt.

Compare what the typical US family had in the early 1950s to today and tell me if you don't agree that Americans have more now. And they have more unnecessary stuff than ever before. The homes are larger. 2-3 cars per family. Entertainment galore. Cell phones. and on and on and on. Don't forget just about everything the Govt has involved itself in more and more has also gone up in price.......from healthcare to education to even the warfare you mentioned.

Q is Tiling My Bathroom
Well, I literally just had to threaten to throw the guy tiling my bathroom out of my house. He started on a rant why certain items are on back order due to supply chain issues, and we had a reasonable conversation about how just in time manufacturing works great long as every link in the chain is on time. And within about 2 minutes he was literally shouting about how the war in Ukraine is fake, the trucker convoy and the Kyle Rittenhouse situation is/was staged by the FBI/CIA/other agencies. And he was shouting. I am not joking. How do you go from supply chain to Q in a huge leap? I asked him nicely to stop and he wouldn't. I finally had to shout back at him to get him to stop. Thank goodness today is his last day in my house. Damn Q.

A couple of months ago I was at a local pizza place I used to frequent with my family until this incident. My 2 youngest had just gotten their second covid shot and I figured going out would be a good reward. We sit down, get our drinks, and put in our order. Not long after these 2 women a couple of tables away engage the server and the manager in a conversation about how the vaccine is dangerous. It started quiet enough that I was only catching the occasional word but they were using enough buzzwords it wasn't hard to catch the general subject matter. A few minutes later it was impossible to ignore it, my kids were getting visibly uncomfortable, and I was getting more and more irritated. I got up told, my wife were were leaving, canceled the order, and left. I didn't say anything or make a scene we just left and ate somewhere else. The next day I emailed the owner and explained what happened and that I wasn't comfortable complaining at the time since the manager on duty was just as enthusiastic about being anti-vax as the 2 women. The owner proceeded to basically tell me they don't need my business and I should be less sensitive.

Edit I get that in most places leaving a negative review would be a good idea but it's a fairly loved local business in a pretty purple rural Midwest town. I'd probably give them business.

Last summer I had a tree guy I had used before come out to look at some stuff. Just making conversation, I asked what the deal was with these lantern flies (an invasive species that recently showed up in NJ). Boy was that the wrong topic. He responds with “Fucking Joe Biden! He’s letting China ruin this country…” and he quickly ran through a dizzying array of right wing talking points from border policy to transgender kids. It blew my mind, I was just trying to small talk about bugs dude, how is your brain so warped that this is any way a political issue?
