Marriage can be a beautiful and loving institution, but unfortunately in many hetero relationships, women often end up with the short end of the stick. Recently, u/zealousideal-tale488 asked the women of Reddit to share brutal truths about marriage that aren't always talked about, and their responses were certainly illuminating. Here's what they had to say:

When Christie Sanchez was 12, she had the best stepdad in the world. He was charismatic and intelligent. He introduced her to new music and took her hiking every weekend. Then, her mom got sick.

For two years Sanchez’s mom, Sandra, battled stage four breast cancer. It was advanced enough that within days of her diagnosis she was having her breasts, lymph nodes and both ovaries removed.

Sanchez’s stepdad, Tom, was upbeat at first. He attended appointments with his wife, cooked meals and looked after the children. But within a week Sandra – the breadwinner in the family – was back at work, and within two, she was already cooking and cleaning again.

By the six-month mark, her stepdad’s attitude had completely changed. “It’s like, once the chemotherapy started and he saw the decline in her health he was kind of like, ‘Oh shit,’ and tapped out.”

Christie shared her experience of the ordeal on a thread that went viral on Twitter in February. The tweet that sparked it all off read: “My sister had stage four cancer and her ex husband complained about her not doing her part to clean up. I will never forget that for as long as I live.”

The post, which has now been shared more than 300,000 times, set off a wave of responses underneath. “My mom had stage four cancer and my dad and brother let her clean everyday till she died !” read one. “My mom was in the hospice and her husband was out and about in a new sports car picking up single moms at my sibling’s after school sports programs. Absolute garbage,” read another.

If you are hoping that these are rare horror stories, there is some comfort to be had: most people – regardless of gender – do not leave their partners when they get sick. In a 2015 paper, researchers tracked 2,701 marriages using a study on health and retirement and watched what happened when someone became unwell during a marriage: only 6% of cases ended in divorce.

But that same study showed that when partners leave, it’s normally men. One study from 2009 found the strongest predictor for separation or divorce for patients with brain cancer was whether or not the sick person was a woman. That same study showed that men were seven times more likely to leave their partner than the other way around if one of them got brain cancer.

In Christie’s case, this meant watching her stepdad go from being an energetic, loving guy, to an irresponsible, stroppy teenager. He would go into his room and sit on the computer as soon as his wife got in, leaving her to cook and clean while going through chemotherapy. “She would be saying to us, ‘I really need your help to do this.’ We tried to step up in the best way that we could, but we were just kids,” says Christie.

Christie, her brother, and her mom made the unspoken decision there and then that they would power through without him until the cancer was gone. “It’s almost like grief. I expected him to be something but when it came down to it he just didn’t show up. He let [us all] down,” says Christie.


Gendered expectations about household work ought to have changed in the last few decades. Women have almost equal representation in the workplace and in 41% of US homes, women are the breadwinners. More men than ever are stay-at-home fathers. And yet, when a woman falls ill, it can really reveal the extent to which men not only feel entitled to a certain level of housework, but also have no concept of how to be an efficient and appropriate caregiver.

Mieke Thomeer, a sociologist from the University of Alabama, who studies how gender affects couples when a partner gets sick, says in most couples people understand they will need to support their partner if they get sick. But, she says, men and women interpret what caregiving looks like very differently.

Men tend to view their partner getting sick in almost a mechanical way: they see it as a problem to be solved. They can separate out the obvious and immediate physical tasks that result from the illness, but other caregiving requirements are left unconsidered, such as emotional care, or housework.

This means that a lot of the time, women continue to do that work – and when they don’t, problems can arise. In 2018, researchers in Germany used a nationally representative sample to show that – as long as they are still able to – women continue to do an uneven amount of the housework while they are sick if that was the dynamic in the relationship before they became unwell. “Particularly with more mild conditions, the expectation is that the status quo will go on unless it gets so extreme that the wife really can’t do that work,” says Thomeer.

The flip side of this is that relationships tend to function well when the woman gets sick and requires intensive care from her partner. But in cases where caregiving is not necessitated, men tend to downplay a woman’s symptoms and class her as largely self-sufficient, expecting her to ask for help rather than proactively giving it.

When Dana Hurd returned after a preventive double mastectomy, her partner seemed to think that she should do anything she was able to – without considering whether it was a good idea, or whether it would be better to just help her.

In the months following the surgery, she had tissue expanders in her chest that were rock hard – they felt like Coke cans. “Every time I had to put on a sweater, or zip up a coat it was just excruciating pain,” she says. But she was still able to walk. And so, in the middle of an icy winter, her partner began to expect that she would walk their 45lb dog every day, just five weeks after surgery: “Never mind that I could have died if the dog pulled me over on to my front,” says Hurd.

The line in the Bible is Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt when she turned to look at the city being destroyed because she missed it. A seminary teacher pointed out that didnt mean she missed the sin. It was her home. She had to have something-friends, family, memories of good times with her children-that she was missing the good, not the sin, yet she was punished because God expects total obedience

It was April in 2008, and I was walking down first avenue in Manhattan, when I was stopped by the police at 86th Street. I noticed that there were people congregating along the road – not a lot, but enough to know that someone important was coming by.

“Who is it this time?” I asked the cop who stopped me. “It’s the Pope,” he said.

Sure enough, a couple of minutes later Pope Benedict’s motorcade drove by. He was sitting in a limousine behind the passenger seat, which was the side of the street I was on, so I saw him up close. The first thing I noticed was how small he was. His head, adorned with the ever-present white cap, or zucchetto, barely cleared the window. Rather than engage the people lined up on the street, Benedict stared straight ahead. He seemed cold and distant.

A few days later, I had lunch with my wonderful friend, the late Father Angelo, and I told him that I had seen the Pope. He looked up at me with disappointment in his eyes, and shot back, “Why would you want to see him?”

Upon his death today, while scanning all the television coverage and reading news outlets about it, I was struck by the fact that virtually every journalist said that Benedict’s legacy would be that he was the first pope to resign in 600 years. But I don’t think that’s true. If the Catholic Church ever opens its vault of secret documents, and becomes transparent, it will only further establish that Benedict, while he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was even more complicit in covering up the Church’s priest abuse scandal.

When Germany’s Munich diocese, which Ratzinger led as archbishop in the 1970s and ’80s, published a report about its response to the sex abuse scandal, it implicated then-Bishop Ratzinger, saying that he failed to address at least four instances of abuse. Benedict, as Pope Emeritus, denied it, despite the evidence. We’re taught to tell the truth as Catholics, so the hypocrisy by Benedict is as alarming as it is sad.

Benedict served as one of Pope John Paul II’s most senior advisors. He led the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), the office responsible for overseeing the church’s doctrine. He was called “God’s Rottweiler” for his ferocious defense of ultra-conservative church doctrine.

When he became Pope, he did take steps to address the abuse scandal, which was at its height when he was elevated to pope from the College of Cardinals in 2005; however, his actions were deemed woefully inefficient by some, including me. As a survivor of a priest’s abuse, I followed this issue very closely, and I felt that Benedict had a cherry-picking and smoke and mirror reaction to the scandal.

The late Barbara Blaine, president of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests during Benedict’s papacy, agreed. “I would hate for him to be remembered as someone who did the right thing because from our perspective, Pope Benedict’s record has been abysmal,” she once said.

A bombshell report by The New York Times in 2010 said that Ratzinger and other church officials failed to act in the case of a Wisconsin priest accused of molesting up to 200 boys. The Times investigation said that church officials stopped proceedings against the priest at the behest of Ratzinger. There are so many other stories where Ratzinger protected the priests versus doing the right thing.

And more offensively, Ratzinger was ruthless in his admonishing and punishing of anyone in the church who was LGBTQ+ or an ally. This hatred includes his comments around HIV and AIDS in the late 1980s. In 1987, while the virus raged, rumors abound that the Catholic Church might implicitly endorse the use of condoms to help prevent the spread of the disease. It was immediately shot down by Ratzinger who said that such an approach to protect gay men and gay sex “would result in at least the facilitation of evil.”

At the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1987, led by L.A. Archbishop Roger Mahony, who was also implicated in the priest abuse scandal, passed a policy that rejected the use of condoms to help prevent the spread of the disease. This from a pro-life institution. Can you imagine how many lives might have been saved if the bishops endorsed the use of condoms?

In May of 1999, Ratzinger brutally silenced a priest and nun who ministered to the LGBTQ+ community. This is part of what Ratzinger wrote about their efforts, and about our community:

“Given the failure of the repeated attempts of the Church's legitimate authorities to resolve the problems presented by the writings and pastoral activities of the two authors, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is obliged to declare for the good of the Catholic faithful that the positions advanced by Sister Jeannine Gramick and Father Robert Nugent regarding the intrinsic evil of homosexual acts and the objective disorder of the homosexual inclination are doctrinally unacceptable because they do not faithfully convey the clear and constant teaching of the Catholic Church in this area. Father Nugent and Sister Gramick have often stated that they seek, in keeping with the Church's teaching, to treat homosexual persons ‘with respect, compassion and sensitivity.’

“For these reasons, Sister Jeannine Gramick, SSND, and Father Robert Nugent, SDS, are permanently prohibited from any pastoral work involving homosexual persons and are ineligible, for an undetermined period, for any office in their respective religious institutes.”

Home Depot's cofounder told The Financial Times nobody wanted to work because of "socialism."
Bernie Marcus, 93, claimed that "nobody works, nobody gives a damn."
He added that if he founded Home Depot in today's business climate, it wouldn't be as successful.
The cofounder of Home Depot said people now lacked the motivation to work because of what he called "socialism."

The rise of socialism was why "nobody works, nobody gives a damn," Bernie Marcus said in an interview with The Financial Times on Thursday. "'Just give it to me. Send me money. I don't want to work — I'm too lazy, I'm too fat, I'm too stupid'."

Political activity
Marcus has been a prominent political donor for conservative candidates and causes. He has donated to the Republican National Committee as well as the National Republican Congressional Committee. In addition to a $1 million donation to Right to Rise USA (a super PAC supporting the presidential campaign of Jeb Bush in 2016), Marcus has also donated to the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit think tank based in Washington, D.C. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Marcus said he prioritized economic issues when considering which political candidates to endorse and donate to, saying, "I’m not an arch [conservative] kind of guy, but people like myself want to see someone in Washington who understands that if the country is not strong economically, we can’t be strong period."

He is almost a century old.
