Right now we are the 11th most densely populated of the states, 17th, if you count the territories like Puerto Rico, DC, & Samoa. We have 254 people per square mile. New Jersey is 1st with 1263 per square mile, though DC beats them in the total list with 11,295 per square mile.

Subaru Can't Afford to Build EVs In North America Because McDonald's Pays Too Well

If you’re planning to sell electric vehicles in North America, chances are you’re trying to work out how to build EVs here, too. The Inflation Reduction Act has made it a worthwhile investment for automakers. Not Subaru, though — Subaru remains unconvinced, for the moment.

We know this from comments made by CEO Tomomi Nakamura during the company’s latest quarterly earnings report, which occurred on Wednesday. During the call, Nakamura lamented the surging inflation that’s pushing wages upwards in parts of the country, which have apparently made running a second U.S plant financially infeasible. Subaru already operates one such facility in Lafayette, Indiana, where the Impreza, Legacy, Outback and Ascent are made.

However, things took an odd turn when Nakamura compared the wages his company pays hourly plant workers with those of another local Indiana business. Courtesy of Automotive News:

“In Indiana, part-time workers at McDonald’s earn $20 to $25 per hour, which is in competition with what temporary workers make at our plant,” Nakamura said. “If we were to build a new plant, it would be very difficult to hire new people for that. Labor costs are rising now. It is quite challenging for us to secure workers for our Indiana plant, including those of suppliers.”

I have never conducted business in the Hoosier state, so it’s quite possible Nakamura knows something I don’t. But when I read the quote above, the $20-to-$25 estimate struck me as a tad high. There are five McDonald’s franchises in the Lafayette area, as far as I could tell via Google Maps. At the time of writing, the restaurant chain’s job site lists a range of staff and managerial positions open between them. The ones that do mention hourly rates all list between $12- and $15-per-hour, “plus cash incentives.” Meanwhile, Subaru’s plant around the corner appears to be paying $17-per-hour at the entry-level end for a “Laborer,” about $19 for a “Production Associate,” and the rates go up from there.

In other words, it doesn’t seem like the Golden Arches are poaching a great many would-be Ascent assembly line workers. But even if they were, there are plenty of reasons for Subaru to pay people a livable wage to build EVs in the U.S. Of course, there are the boring reasons nobody likes to talk about, but it’s also just a prudent business move for Subaru.

Sure, the company can count on its classic conservatism to get it through the next few years. It’s worked wonders thus far. By March — the end of its current financial year — the brand estimates its operating profit will cross $2 billion. In its second quarter alone, Subaru sold three percent more cars in the U.S. than over the same period in 2021. It was the only region outside Japan where sales volume increased.

That’s not going to last forever, though. Electrified models will consume ever-larger slices of the pie as the decade marches on. In the long run, certain cities and states will phase out internal-combustion car sales. Subaru expects to have a plant in Japan churning out electric cars by 2027, so it can obviously see the writing on the wall.

Doug Ford’s conservative government tabled legislation this week that would unilaterally impose a contract on education workers, and levy hefty fines for striking. The move escalates a bitter dispute over pay for education workers, including custodians, early childhood educators and educational assistants.

Justin Trudeau has waded into the standoff, the prime minister sharply criticizing the Ontario government decision to “suspend people’s rights and freedoms”.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents 55,000 education workers, has called for an 11.3% raise for its workers – often the lowest-paid in schools – arguing that stagnant wage growth and high inflation have hit the lowest earners hardest.

The government has countered with a 2.5% annual raise for the lowest-income workers and 1.5% raises for others.

With little progress on negotiations and a strike planned on Friday, the government fast-tracked Bill 28.

If passed, the controversial legislation – which fines workers C$4,000 a day and the union C$500,000 for striking – would mark the first time in the county’s history that the right of workers to collectively bargain and to strike could be legally stripped away.

The government acknowledges its bill breaches the country’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Human Rights Code, but says its priority is averting a strike.

Ontario’s government is invoking a rarely used legal mechanism known as the notwithstanding clause, which allows provincial governments to override certain portions of the charter for a five-year time period.

Quebec has long used the clause to pass its language rights laws, but most governments have been hesitant to use the mechanism, said constitutional lawyer Ewa Krajewska.

“The Ford government has been much quicker to reach for the clause and the worry from a constitutional rights perspective is that it’s becoming increasingly normalized to invoke it,” she said. “And I’m concerned that every time there’s a bit of a blow-up about rights and legislation, the government is just going to invoke the notwithstanding clause. The fact that they’re willing to go to it so quickly should give everyone pause.”

Canada’s justice minister called it “exceedingly problematic”, but Krajewska says there is little the federal government can do to stop it.

Lawyers say they are also troubled by the government’s pre-emptive use of the clause which would shield Bill 28 from judicial review.

“The Ford government is essentially saying it is above the law. This is not just an attack on the fundamental charter rights, human rights and labor rights of education workers. It’s also an attack on our constitutional democracy and the rule of law,” said Adrienne Telford, a constitutional and labour lawyer.

This. Someone knowingly violating child labor laws deserves worse than I'm willing to condemn them to. At minimum, they should lose the ability to hold a business license based upon how many violations they have, with the business being put under temporary management before ownership is transferred to employees, with the share for the minors going into a trust.

We had an IT department when I was hired as an operator in 1987. Then everyone started moving to contracting the service out. My union fought it twice. Third time the union rep was a friend of our new director. We lost out. That's when I transferred to stay with the government job.

I lost contact with the others, but I understand they were whittled down slowly to save the new company a buck as the county automated those services

I'm just tired of working
I'm 27, i work 54 hours, 6 days a week. Commute is 40 mins each way on shit roads. I get home to my husband and I'm too tired to do anything besides cooking and taking a shower. By 8:30-9pm I'm already falling. I have so many bills to pay we cannot afford to lose hours either. Housing and bills are expensive.

And we are also very well paid for our city.( I kinda live in the middle of nowhere)

Am I supposed to be doing this for 40 more years?

I’m in a similar spot. The second I turned 16 I started working for a family general contracting business. I am now 37 and have maintained some form of blue collar work for 21 years now to pay bills and put food on the table.

I feel like my body is broken. I now have a decent union job but the conditions are still downright awful sometimes. During busy season it is very easy to pull 90-110hr weeks. Some coworkers just see the OT, meanwhile all I see if an early death… and yeah, I don’t have much to show for it. Some extra cash to throw around here or there but I also live in a shitty 1br apartment off the last subway stop. My back and knees just fucking hurt, even on days off. Chiro doesn’t seem to help. And it is expected that I continue to do this for another 20-25 years at the minimum to hit certain retirement benchmarks. I don’t see myself lasting another 10, honestly. It’s no wonder substance abuse and gambling/etc. is so rampant in my industry. When you’re already broken, well… why the fuck not? There’s nothing to lose

You're kidding yourself if you think you'll be done with this nonsense at 65. Retirement is, more and more, becoming something most people will never see. Couple that with the ever rising cost of corporate greed and the general lack of interest in most of our elected officials to actual do something to help anyone but themselves... well, let's just say the near future appears to be rather bleak.

On a more positive note, it would appear that societies have a roughly 100 year cycle that seems to reset things, so let's hope we're on the threshold of a fresh reset 'cause this shit sucks

A voter needs to state their name & address.
It needs to match what is on the voter roll.

So all these illegals need to register, be recognized as a valid voter to be entered on the voter roster, then go to a poll to vote.
If they did not provide proper identification when they registered to vote, they need to show their drivers license before they vote.

So that drivers license they get that proves they know the rules of the road to drive in the US DOES NOT clear the Registrar's office so they cannot vote.

The government having my infonis one thing.

Working in law enforcement as I did, I had to run checks on my clients in the state database.

There are strict rules for the use of that database which, if violated can cost the local agency the right to access the system. 

So no, we took a class every other year about it. Privacy. Accessing & sharing info. I had a co-worker who apparently looked up her brother's girlfriend & GOT FIRED FOR IT.

When I worked adult I heard of the contract workers for the IT system BRAG ABOUT being able to look up people in the system for personal use, something we could get fired OR JAILED over.
