Real Estate Dispute Among Family Members Leaves 1 Dead, 3 Injured in Southern California HomeThe brother and sister had allegedly been fighting over the sale of their father's home By Harriet Sokmensuer August 09, 2021 04:16 PM A Southern California man was fatally shot and three other people were injured during a family argument over real estate. On Saturday at about 10:50 a.m., police responded to reports of gunshots at a Huntington Beach home, according to a police news release. Upon arrival, officers found three people in the front yard suffering from gunshot wounds. "While officers were evacuating the victims, a male, who was believed to be the shooter, came out of the residence with a superficial gunshot wound," the news release states. One of the victims succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital, while the suspect and two remaining victims are expected to survive. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Investigators believe the shooting was related to a family dispute regarding the upcoming sale of the Operetta Drive home. "A group of real estate professionals accompanied a family member to view the residence when the shooting took place," the news release states. According to authorities, the dispute was between a brother and sister, CBSLA reports. The home had belonged to their deceased father. Authorities have not released the names of the victims or shooter, but said the suspect is now in custody. Jay Coffman, who grew up in the neighborhood, told the station that the suspect had been living in the home for decades and had cared for his father before his death five years ago. "We used to hang out all the time," Coffman said. "He was a great guy. I never would picture him doing that. I didn't even know he had a gun." The man who died from the shooting was one of the real estate professionals who found themselves in the middle of the dispute.
I have been hearing an awful lotta horrid stories of people in regards to inheritance.
How Many Americans Receive an Inheritance?
About 8% of Americans get an inheritance of any kind — and those who do inherit will likely get less than $25,000 US Dollars (USD). Less than 2% of Americans receive more than $100,000 in inheritance. This data came from a study conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.
More inheritance facts::
An inheritance can include everything from cash and property titles to debts and obligations, which can lead to a "negative inheritance" where heirs owe money.
In the US, the average inheritance is spent in 17 months.
In 2007, a Portuguese aristocrat left his entire fortune to 70 strangers that he chose at random from a phone book.
Inheritance tax is different than an estate tax. An inheritance tax is placed on the beneficiaries of an inheritance, while an estate tax is placed on the estate as a whole.

TBH, if I had been the guy spending years taking care of dad, I'd have been pretty pissed when the siblings swooped in to collect up all the cream (and yeah, that's exactly what I think happened) that I might go a little nuts as well.

THAT was pretty much what I read into it, as well.
And I know someone that is dealing with that exact same scenario. People are amazing in their ability to see things so differently from one another.
I also realize that the vast majority will never have an inheritance left for them........which is what makes it so easy to vote FOR taxing inheritance, imo.

You understand that estates valued at less than $11.18 MILLION are not subject to Estate Tax, right? Inheritance taxes are different and vary from state to state. People vote FOR inheritance taxes because they think they are sticking it to the rich... because they don't know the difference between Estate Tax and Inheritance Tax.

Remember when a $Million was a lot of money?
Either or. My view is it's simply the Govt taking another bite from the apple.
IF you somehow acquired a vast amount of wealth.......and was accordingly taxed on it while alive......... then I don't see where anyone should have a say in how you dispense with it after your death. You wanna leave it to your kid? to your friends? to the school down the street. or to your favorite charity? Every single penny of it should go to them untaxed, imo

Then vote accordingly and inform your friends accurately so that they will do the same.

That 'Less than 8% to ever receive an inheritance' already has this debate at a severe disadvantage.
It's a principle sort of thing. I likely won't ever be fabulously wealthy........but I still stick up for private property and wealth rights. The same way I expect all Americans of every background to be treated equally under the law.
Deeply Progressive taxes are just another way of placing a thumb on the scale and creating perpetual class divisions, imo.

There's a book I want you to read. It's a bit long but until you read it - and a lot of the other material written as a response to it - I don't think you really have a place in any conversation regarding economics:
An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations

here's one Review

Adam Smith's work is used as a conservative gospel. And much like the Bible, it can represent anything to those who have not read it. Smith's argument is for more liberalized global trade, reduced military spending, more progressive taxation, and smaller government. The current Republicans would chaff at all those programs. Smith would be a mainstream centre left thinker who would inspire Barack Obama and the remainers. This is not what I expected from the Wealth of Nations. What is more astounding is the applicability of his principles and assessments of human activity to today. Please read this book before you use Smith's name in vain to defend a capitalist argument.
===================================================
I'm for global trade. I'm for reducing military spending. I am not for progressive taxation. And I am all for smaller Govt.
3 outta 4? And to me capitalism is like a gun. Of course it can be abused in the wrong person's hands. That shouldn't mean others can't enjoy it's success.

Try reading the book instead of the reviews.

hahahahaha LUCKILY for me it was the top one. Though I did peruse a few more down the list.
So my 3 outta 4 isn't good enough? I think that's about as good as we can get in most discussions

Absolutely true.
She's a much better student and worker than I will ever be.
Now, because she's been working since she was 13 years old.........maybe you can tell me why she places even a bit more hardcore conservative than me on those internet tests? Could it be just the difference in a working person's approach versus the approach of those with a Masters Degree?

I started work at 14. Had to pay for private high school... and then college... and then life. 41 years later, I'm still working and yet with age, I can see how some people could - and hopefully would - do better if they were just given a chance. I don't want to give them jobs, Abs. I just want them to have the opportunity to get those jobs.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go get ready for work. I'll be back at my break.

I want exactly the same things.........just with a different approach.
For the last few years there have been more Help Wanted signs than I've ever seen in my previous decades. But millions of Americans are content to sit back and collect funds from the Govt (tax payers). I'm sure you could find some articles or studies that dismiss it all as statistical anomalies, but sorry it just doesn't appear that way to me. For a wide variety of factors, Americans do not seem to be looking after themselves. They keep demanding and voting for more and more support..........all without realizing where the resources have to come from. It's just plain foolishness, imo. But it sure gets people elected.

Have you ever had to level a bookcase
Did you just throw it up against the wall and no matter how wobbly and crooked it was, you said, "It's fine."
I'm betting you added a shim here and there until that bubble was dead center and that sucker didn't wobble at all.

Shims are an inexpensive and quick way to achieve stability.
The foundations of many of these social programs are rotten from the foundation on up.
