Whether it be about stigmatizing Mexicans fleeing the oppressive Diaz regime or targeting black, jazz musicians who dared to become popular entertainers among whites, the origins of the "War on Drugs" were simply racist policies meant to suppress, oppress, and marginalize people of color in the United States.
The "firebrand" behind it all was a high school dropout, Harry J. Anslinger, himself the son of immigrants... "the good kind"... white ones. He once said, "Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men." He also kept a file (in Hooveresque fashion) called, "Marijuana and Musicians." Even among other racists he was known for being "crazy racist."
This guy worked with the Bureau of Prohibition, but when he saw the writing on the wall that would signal the end of the Volstead Act, he started campaigning hard against marijuana and eventually was appointed as the founding commissioner of the brand new Federal Bureau of Narcotics even before Prohibition ended. HE created a scare and then got put in charge of cracking down on it, which he did, for over 30 years. During that time, as medical studies showed that marijuana was NOT addictive and did NOT fill users with murderous rage (as Anslinger asserted), Anslinger denounced the studies as unscientific and suggested that the promulgators of the studies were "communists" thus cementing further fear of marijuana and other recreational drugs as "Un-American."
32 years of the same rhetoric had a profound effect on the American psyche and that has affected drug policy in the US ever since to the tune of: "Commie blacks and Hispanics are trying to destroy our beautiful white children by getting them hooked on drugs!"
The 60's were the proof in the pudding. White kids were smoking pot, growing their hair long, engaging in "free love," and listening to that "demon rock-n-roll" (the musical, evolutionary descendant of jazz)!!!
When the police came marching in, the white kids "got help" and the black kids got locked up.
And so it has ever been. Even to this day when the legalization of pot is taking hold and decriminalization is (hopefully) not far behind, I'll bet that when you mention marijuana to many, their first thoughts will be about drug cartels starting in Mexico and moving south rather than "homegrown."
Say, "cocaine" and minds think of South America even though it (and heroin, morphine, oxycodone, etc.) were all created by white Europeans.
Hell, we even make sure to use the word "opioid" to make sure that people's minds connect it to "opium" and then to distant Middle Eastern lands just to make sure that some "darkies" are responsible for "Hillbilly Heroin."
And if you start talking about all the meth labs in the US, someone is bound to remind you that "it was invented in Asia!" They won't mention that large-scale production and exportation to the west was started by the Germans.
Our prisons and jails are overflowing with people of color because we let a racist, high school dropout scare us into creating a system of institutionalized racism that has left us all with encultured racist thinking.
It's time to end the "War on Drugs." It might also go a long way in fighting the "War on Poverty" which was really just a war on poor people (mostly of color) anyway.

Everything we put in our bodies does damage so why speed things up?

It is what they learned to do to "have fun" or relax. It's a lack of imagination. I decided long ago if my head couldn't get there on its own, I didn't need to go there. There are not enough hours in a day to do everything I want to do so why would I waste an hour being blitzed out of my skull? |

you figure the average person has a lot of imagination? Yeah, some have absolutely none. Not only couldn't they imagine what it'd be like with Donald Trump as POTUS in 2016, but they still couldn't imagine what it'd be like in 2020... And that was after 4 years experience!  |

The same could be said for another batch of voters...........they couldn't imagine Joe getting in, increasing spending, driving up the cost of living and gas and allowing millions to enter the country illegally.

It's not the government upping prices, dude. It's the companies. Like when there's a fire at a refinery & prices at the pump go up the next day if not that same day. |

It's not the government upping prices, dude.
It's the companies.Like when there's a fire at a refinery & prices at the pump go up the next day if not that same day.
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. You can't have the Govt pass laws that hurt business and then not expect the business to find a way to compensate.
You throw in something like rent control.......and the rent for all non-controlled places continues to climb. And you have a Marxist type of set up where only a tiny few benefit from said program.

Never saw the point of drug use. Everything we put in our bodies does damage so why speed things up? I did them when I was younger, but now I'm just doing the legal everywhere ones: caffeine... nicotine... alcohol... but as long as alcohol is legal, I don't see the point in keeping pot illegal. |
