I was unaware of some of the history presented in the video and did some subsequent research to verify it. That's not to say that I distrust Oliver's writing staff or the basic premise of the story, but some of it left me so appalled that I simply needed my eyes to agree with my ears... sort of like working out a math problem on my own.
I'm not a fan of monetary reparations for slavery - and Oliver states that that is a different conversation - but I can definitely see the case for reparations for housing discrimination and I'll tell you why: education.
The link between housing and education is obvious. The link between poverty and education is obvious. The link between poverty and crime is obvious.
But I guess I never knew how deep the river of racism in the government ran. I knew that neighborhoods actively worked to keep out black homeowners, but I always thought that was just the racism of the people in the community. I didn't know there actual covenants or that those covenants were required by the federal government.
I've said for years that we need to fix our education system so that it works for everyone and my thoughts on the subject moved in a certain way for finding solutions. Now I've got new information and I'm seeing new solutions.
None of it will make racism go away completely, but at least we can work to get it out of our most basic institutions and work out ways to truly level the playing field.
That said, once the field is level, you still have to come to play, but that's up to your own sense of individualism and personal responsibility.

It's always weird to me to see these examples on display. Didn't ever have it so blatantly in my area growing up. Maybe some big city folks have had far different environments. Which again, I find kinda sad/funny.
And I'd never even heard of 'Sundown' policies until on these politics forums, by the way.

So, do the research as I did.
