How about we skip talking about "terms" and just start talking about years?
How about we cap elected officials at 20 years (or whenever they finish their current term should the "anniversary" come in the middle of a term"?
How about we include all state and local terms in with the federal ones?
One 2-year term on your local school board
One 2-year term as a state rep
Two 2-year terms as a federal rep
That's 8 years
Two 6-year terms as a senator
DONE!
"But I want to run for President!"
"Shoulda done that 6 years ago instead of staying in the Senate."
20 years is a pretty good run and you still have a chance to get hooked up with some "appointed" position and continue your public service... as long as "public service" is what you're all about.
"But what I want to get done will take more than 20 years!"
"Then spend less time at fundraisers and on lobbyist junkets and start doing your fucking job."
And since years are important, let's move retirement age back to 65 for public servants - elected and otherwise - and make it mandatory. If you're still capable of working, I'm sure there's something for you in the "non-agist" (
) public sector.
If combining local, state, and federal is going to be too hard to keep track of, how about 10, 10, and 10? Now you've got 30 years. That's plenty of career time for anyone.
