For those having trouble with the modern language trends and/or their subtleties (myself included), I think it's important to have a discussion about the words and phrases in use. Today I want to talk about "label" and "identify."
"Label" has a negative connotation. It's what one does to other people.
"Identify" has a positive connotation as it refers to how one sees themself.
Example: "So, you're bi?"
"I prefer not to be labelled. I identify as pansexual."
An argument could be made that "identifying" is the same as "self-labelling," but, as I said, "label" is negative. People don't want to see themselves negatively... unless they've got a some serious depression.
Labels cut people off from the rest of the population as in, "I don't hang around with <insert label here> people."
But here's the problem I have and where I get a bit confused: if the person "identifies" using the same "label" that I have used, why do other people get upset about it?
Me: "That's Don over there. He's gay."
Random SJW: "How dare you label him!"
I know Don. I know that he is gay. I know he identifies as gay. He's out and proud of his identity. So why the fuck am I getting labelled as a labeller? How did I become the bad guy for simply stating a fact and stating it in the same way that Don, himself, would?
Should I take the Random SJW over to meet Don and have him identify himself? Would it make a difference?
Probably not. There's nothing an angry SJW hates more than having their own bigotry exposed, but I don't like the idea that if I don't do anything, the SJW is going to run around badmouthing me to everyone else when I did nothing wrong. Trying to defend myself just makes me look like I'm making excuses or being petty.
I have to live with my "label." I'm not allowed to "identify" lest I incur more labels.
And that's where I can't help but feel that this whole "label/identify" nonsense is less about creating inclusion and more about EXclusion.
Would it have helped if I had said, "That's Don over there. He identifies as gay."?
Possibly, but now I feel as though I'm being forced to add extraneous words to state a fact simply to mollify random passers-by who are not even part of my conversation.
Anyway, that's my INGSOC lesson for the day.

Is it modern language trends and/or their subtleties, or modern political trends and/or their subtleties, or both? Language certainly gives "voice" to the politics, but then, it always has. SSDD. Personally, I've just about given up caring or even trying to understand these latest "trends and/or subtleties". Perhaps if I wait long enough, they'll change yet again? "I don't hang around with <other> people." PS: And my assessment of your INGSOC lesson for the day is "Doubleplusgood".

4. 1. Glad that's cleared up. 2. And if you wait long enough, they change again. It just depends where the pendulum is located on its oscillation. 3. That's what they said... Hey! Have you been talking to those bastards behind my back? 4. I like the "evolutionary ladder" theme you picked, but the world of BB would be an interesting theme for a website.
