You're looking at the 'free' handouts as a blessing to the masses..........while ignoring the yoke you're placing around the neck of those ACTUALLY paying for it all.
I'm trying to get more people healthy and into jobs so they can pay taxes and actually need fewer services.
You want America to run like a business, right? Well, you gotta spend money to make money.
I have no issue with you trying........ just stopped throwing good money after bad. It's a failure and you refuse to admit it.
Aren't you one of those "The Govt can not be run as a business!" types? Are they 'making money' on their 'investment'? Sorry, I just don't see it.

1. I'll admit it's a failure when we actually try it and it fails. Fair enough?
2. I'm one of those "Government SHOULDN'T be run like a business" types.

1. Same old mantra....... it just hasn't been done right YET.........and not enough money was spent YET.
2. That's why your children and grandchildren are already screwed

1. It has been done correctly in many places. You can't call it a failure in the US because we haven't tried it yet. And AGAIN, it's not about spending more money. It's about spending wisely. Every other country with UHC has seen their per capita health care costs go down. If we're so "exceptional," we should be able to do at least as well as them.
2. Not living in a communist hell-hole is going to be bad for my children and grandchildren? Whoda thunk it?

1. You keep suggesting money will be spent wisely in the US. What leads you to believe that's EVER going to happen?
2. Which location are you referencing there?

1. I suggest that it CAN be spent wisely. Medicare does a good job at spending wisely.
2. The "run it like a business" America that you so desperately want.

1. Oh, I agree............ it CAN. We just disagree that these people ever will.
2. Balanced Budgets. Stable planning for the future. Lower taxes. I'm just a complete nut, right?

1. But the fact that certain programs have been working well for decades doesn't mean we should shit-can them because some other program isn't. Baby and bathwater.
2. If you think that businesses run that way then you are nuts.
Companies are constantly going over budget (especially on new product development) and they are constantly borrowing. More importantly, they pass on those new costs to the consumer.
Keeping with your analogy, passing on those extra costs would be "higher taxes."

1. The IRS admits to tons of fraud and losses, Medicare and many others are the same. Don't get me started on Welfare or the Educational system. I'm NOT suggesting tossing it all away.......... just putting someone like YOU (for instance) in charge of that crap and watch how quickly things shape up and fly right.
2. Which companies pull that nonsense and last for very long? (Please, don't include the auto companies that got bailed out again)
I was actually discussing a similar line of thinking last nite, too. I don't care if it's taxes or higher costs......either way the consumer and the vanishing middle class is feeling the squeeze yet again. I wish there was an honest accounting for how those costs get passed along, y'know? Like when property taxes goes up.......who doesn't think that the renters are going to foot that bill? They have to because the landlord isn't in business to just break even or operate at a loss.
That's why I despise all of the chatter from politicians handing out 'free' stuff.........as if their own voters won't feel the pinch eventually. NOTHING is free. But they keep acting like it all is.
An even more honest discussion would be for all the Bernie-Bots that feel free college and healthcare would be awesome.......well, WHERE is the honest and open accounting of how much more EVERYONE will really be paying? If people are going to go from 15% taxes up to 25-40%........why not just tell them the truth? Maybe it's still a better deal? But suggesting that the wealthy are the only ones getting hit is beyond foolish.

1. On the plus side, single-payer UHC would reduce the number of fraudulent claims as there'd be no need to make them, thus reducing legal costs and leaving more money in the bucket for actual health care.
And thank you for the compliment.
2. Well, you said it: all the companies that got bailouts and all those that continue to get subsidies... and they're all HUGE campaign contributors.
3. Everyone knows that "free isn't really free" but we need certain public goods in order to remain competitive.

Tough to imagine a country that's been pushing self-esteem for no reason, eliminating merit based promotion and keeping score altogether is concerned all that much with remaining competitive.
