The FAA provided those numbers as it announced it was seeking civil penalties totaling $54,500 against five passengers for behavior ranging from refusing to wear a mask to assaulting flight attendants. “I’ve been in the industry since 1992, and this is the worst ever,” Montgomery said in an interview. “People seem to be more angry. When they’re asked to do something, compliance seems to be more difficult.” Southwest and most airlines train flight attendants to de-escalate tense situations with unhappy travelers. Montgomery said those tactics are growing less effective and a small number of passengers are becoming bolder in challenging the authority of crew members. Montgomery, the president of Local 556 of the Transport Workers Union, wrote about the weekend attack in a letter to Southwest CEO Gary Kelly. Montgomery asked Kelly to lobby federal officials for more federal air marshals on flights and to ban passengers who violate rules instead of putting them on another flight. She said flight attendants are concerned about Southwest's plan to resume selling alcohol on board planes. Many recent cases that have caught FAA’s attention involving passengers who were drinking.

They aren't trained for battle, Abs. They're trained to deal with the occasional drunk in Coach who wants to know why he can't have the same lobster bisque being served in First Class. They're taught how to de-escalate, not restrain.

It would seem they need more training, hmmmm?
or just maybe we should expect better behavior from civilians?

1. You want waiters to be trained in how to take down a belligerent customer?
2. Yes. We should definitely expect better from the passengers. Being 5.5 miles high in a pressurized aluminum can is stressful enough without having some idiot yelling about the rules that he knew ahead of time that he was required to follow.
You have the right... and the FREEDOM... to NOT be an asshole.

You put that in quotes. I assume several of the 200 said something very similar...

1. NOPE, i EXPECT all ADULTS TO BEHAVE AS SUCH WHEN THEY'RE OUT AND ABOUT.
2. Agreed............ though these airports, the TSA and the shrinking seat sizes do not make that any easier these days.

1. That's kinda the point of the article. Adults are NOT being well-behaved and their bad behavior is getting beyond what a flight attendant should reasonably be expected to deal with and they are asking for help.
2. True. But if you have to fly, you have to suck it up and deal with it... like an adult.

1. Welcome to humanity.......where not everyone behaves accordingly. Bill Burr - If everyone would just recycle. If everyone would just go vegan. If everyone......
2. An updated version of the story from a witness contends the stewardess was actually the aggressor during the entire flight and several people heard the later 'puncher' exclaiming "Don't touch me!" Apparently she got touched one too many times.
Not that I wouldn't warn anyone against taking action when the inevitable punishment will come down with the full force of the Federal Govt.

1. I don't need a "welcome." I'm already in the room. You're the one complaining that flight attendants obviously aren't trained well enough to deal with assholes who are far more numerous and belligerent than the past.
2. Haven't heard the story except here, but did I expect a "he said/she said" thing. Of fucking course.
And, of fucking course, I'll expect you to side with the misbehaving person against the horrible authoritarian regime of flight attendants.

1. are you?
2. WHY do you think I'm siding with the puncher? I've said many times people are too quick to violence.
But I also realize I've said one problem with the world today is not enough people have been given a direct shot to the throat.
