Merriam-Webster has this to say:
Definition of religion
1a : the state of a religious... a nun in her 20th year of religion 1b(1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural 1b(2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance 2 : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices 3 archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness 4 : a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith It's that last one that I want to talk about.
The folks on the "right" know this and do their best to make their spiritual and political religions mesh... even if it means bending... lying about... or outright ignoring the spiritual text in order to serve political ends.
Folks on the left would be quick to agree with the above statement but would get outrageously upset when I point out how they treat their politics like a religion... but, here goes....
Folks on the left have an unwritten but completely transmissable set of beliefs which include stock responses to any and all questions or remonstrances: They have a "scripture" and can quote it verbatim when required.
In the face of objective facts, the left will deflect, dodge, and obfuscate like priest caught with an altar boy in some state of undress.
The left believes that their way of doing things - and their way alone - will save humanity from the clutches of hell (that they call, "Republican Rule").
They have doctrines about what can be said and what may never be uttered.
They conduct inquisitions based on little or no evidence and consign the unbelievers to hell. The rest of us call it "Cancel Culture."
They tell us who MATTERS and how the "unbelievers" don't.
They offer a "promised land" paid for by the sweat and toil of the unbelievers.
I could go on but this cig is almost done and I'm tired... and I don't even want to get into how "atheists" have a more "faith based" belief system than the religious....

I've mentioned before my environment growing up and how I've come to the belief that religious people in my area were much more tolerant and accepting than the political types I've been running into the last few decades.
It was always a 'Take it or leave it' sort attitude with local churches. I like having that option.
There seems to be a deep seated desire to follow something/anything with most people.

I have seen plenty of examples of that.
It's sorta like whenever I mention abusers and enablers........and the ladies often get all offended

Jordan Peterson said that when formal religious systems collapse non-religious systems take upon themselves religious functions.
