So I watched this docuseries on the Institute In Basic Life Principles (IBLP), the cult the Duggar kids grew up in. The Duggar family is featured prominently in the series, and the older girls have have left the cult and are coming forward about what went on behind the scenes. There are also other victims interviewed about all the physical and sexual abuse that takes place in this fundie-cult. It seems like whenever there is a patriarchal, misogynistic, sexually repressive cult, its leader is a pedophile and a rapist, Every. Single. Time. And I say this as a person of faith who left organized religion. I think the Duggar girls are very brave. It can't be under-scored how hard it is to go against cult programming, and also out your own family as abusive. I'd like to read their memoirs. I'd recommend the docuseries, it's really illuminating, and these people deserve to be heard. The multiple adult child-survivors of the IBLP cult that took part in the docuseries and told their stories are also braver than I'll ever be. Some info on Bill Gothard. He should be in prison. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gothard

I've seen too much of the dark side... throughout history, too. I define myself as an agnostic atheist secular humanist. Yeah, I studied a little too much of art history, seen too much of what one religion does to another, and to its followers, as far back as Hinduism's beginnings, up through the Renaissance in Europe. Not pretty. Anything authoritarian tends to be abusive. Religion and politics. I've never seen any of the footage on the Duggar girls, but they must be very brave to talk about any of it. Most people don't talk about it.

I watched the shiny happy people series too. I can’t believe their mother let them be abused either.

Most people don't talk about it. The Duggars showed up on TLC as another "freak of the weak" show. I can't remember how many kids they had when the started, 17 maybe? They seemed harmless enough, but the mom always struck me as weird, like she was loaded on Xanax or something. I was never a faithful watcher, but caught a few shows when nothing else was on (this was before the streaming revolution). Then the talk about all the abuse related to the cult they're involved with comes out. Then the son gets outed for having molesting his sisters, but weirdly, the sisters went on a PR tour defending him (they were not given a choice it turns out). That's when TLC dropped the mom and Dad's show and focused on the sisters (who were tricked into a contract by their father). The Duggar empire finally fell when the same brother got arrested for child porn. And not just any child porn, but sexual assault of infants under a year old as well as torture porn. He's currently in prison. Hopefully he drops dead and the world will be a better place for it. One of the most sickening things their cult teaches is that any kind of sexual harassment/misbehavior or assault by men is always the fault of the woman in either their look or behavior. I'd love to know how they spun their son's sick, depraved behavior. IMO they helped reinforce in him anything he did sexually was never his responsibilty because of their cult.

One of the most sickening things their cult teaches is that any kind of sexual harassment/misbehavior or assault by men is always the fault of the woman in either their look or behavior. I'd love to know how they spun their son's sick, depraved behavior. IMO they helped reinforce in him anything he did sexually was never his responsibility because of their cult. I had only heard their names in association with a TV show, but never watched it. So I did some research last night online, and got the full background, which was nauseating. I've watched several TV shows that focus on forensic psychology, and done a lot of reading on the mindset, and there are some clues there of how these things happen, and because I am aware of this kind of behavior by experience. You probably don't really want to know how they spun their son's sick, depraved behavior. "If you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks into you". There are a lot of things I wish I didn't 'understand'. The parents may not have known what was happening at the time it happened. In a household that big, they could not have been aware of everything that was happening under their roof. And little girls that are molested are generally afraid to tell an adult, the abuser makes them think that it is 'normal' or threatens them if they tell. Add in that God can forgive all sins, and that leaves people free to do what they want because God will forgive them. That is why Catholic priests are so likely to offend, they think they can confess to God and will be forgiven. They hear confessions every day of people who do far worse, and they can assign penance and then forgiveness, why can't they do it for themselves? The certainty of the belief of God and Heaven is an acceptable alternative to the uncertainty of the real world, and if one can't get justice in this world, God will apply justice in the afterlife. It allows people to go on living their lives without the weight of all the injustices in the world. It was a hard concept for me to give up, and the weight of real-world inability to right wrongs weighs heavily on me personally. It's why I focus on lessening the suffering of sentient beings, as much as I can, in small ways. Like the Starfish story of the man throwing starfish back into the sea so they won't die on the beach in the sun, when questioned why he did it, how could he possibly make a difference, he responded, as he threw another starfish into the water, he said, "I made a difference to that one." Additionally, there is another quote that applies - "The healthy man does not torture. Only the tortured become torturers." The son may have been tortured in ways we don't know about. Parents aren't always 'good'. They, too, may have suffered some form of abuse in their backgrounds. My mother's father was a torturer. She was one of six children. Of those six siblings, one announced that he would never marry or have children because he saw too much of his father's personality in himself. The other five married and had children; me and my first cousins. Of those first cousins, three of them (two were brother and sister) committed suicide, due to childhood abuse. One of them had become a licensed therapist, but when she decided to out her parents at a family gathering, the rest of the family turned against her, saying that she was lying. She eventually committed suicide by eating a bullet (an unusually violent way for a female). She was making a statement with her death. I wasn't there at that gathering, I was undergoing chemotherapy at the time and couldn't travel. It was after that incident when I started delving into forensic psychology, and also started seeing a therapist. I had already decided to never have children. By the way, my mother's family were all practicing Lutherans. Edit: I have seen some discussion of a genetic predisposition to pedophilia, but I don't know how valid that research is. Statistically, one in every eight abused children goes on to be an abuser. There are three recognized categories of pedophilia: pedophiles, who focus on pre-pubescent children, hebephiles, who focus on post-pubescent children, and ephebophiles, that focus on teenagers under the age of 18. There also have been cases involving infantophiles.

Additionally, this segment of one of the forensic psychology programs has had significant meaning to me.
