They don’t have security on your floor? That’s nuts No, but TBF, security is good about getting to the unit QUICK when a personal alarm goes off. And when somone hits a personal alarm an overhead light system starts blinkinging all over the unit and a buzzer starts going that can be heard on the floors above and below. It alerts the rest of the staff to what's happening and often the patient engaging in the behavior will be startled enough to stop what they're doing long enough for other staff to get there. My unit is the most acute, but we're supposed to have a psychiatric ICU (less patients, more staff, less stimulation, security guard stationed on the unit). They turned it into a Covid unit. So now my unit has all the ICU-appropriate patients without the extra staff or security 🤨😐 Honestly though, I really enjoy my work. I'm good with these patients. They are lucky to have you, Marilyn! You truly help people who really need it.

So I came in to work today and found out my unit manager got the crap beat out of her New Year's Eve morning. She had to come into fill hole in the schedule from 3A-7A. She opened the door to the nurse's station to hand this guy a 72-hour notice of intent to withdrawal treatmemt form (he must have wanted to leave), and he said "thanks for opening the door, bitch" and pushed his way INTO the nurse's station amd proceeded to whale on her until she was on the ground and then kicked the shit out of her. I don't know if she couldn't reach her personal alarm or what, but fortunately one of the floor staff saw what was happening and sounded the alarm.
He's in seclusion until we discharge him to the police. I hate that this happened, but we've beem saying forever 3 people is not enough at night for the acuity of illness we deal with. It was just a matter of time before this happened. And if it was me or another regular staff member, the hospital would totally blow it off. Since it was middle-management that got hurt, maybe they'll take it seriously 😐

Since it was middle-management that got hurt, maybe they'll take it seriously 😐 Yikes! They had better take that seriously! It sounds like it was somewhat pre-meditated. Apparently he knew to take her personal alarm off of her and threw it before she could activate it. He kicked her in the head REPEATEDLY. And after they got him into seclusion he started threatening to rape certain staff members. So the thought is that he may be very anti-social/sociopathic in addition to psychotic (he claims he thought my supervisor had a gun and cyanide pills she was going to use on him). Some people are very organized in their thoughts despite being delusional. My one patient can sit down with you and have a great talk about baseball or movies before he moves on to his psychiatrist being in league with the Russians and how he is an asset to national security. These kind of patients can be the most dangerous, because they are able to mask their symptoms more easily. I feel terrible for my supervisor. I texted her this morning and told her if she needs anything, like help with someone walking her dogs or help doing yard clean-up, I'm happy to help. The worst part is that she is STILL ON CALL for call offs! I guess she can't come in to cover shifts, but she's taking the calls and then doing whatever with them. I'm PISSED on her behalf. By the time they got this guy off of her, her eyes were already swollen shut from being kicked in the face repeatedly. She should not have to do anything but sit home on workman's comp and recover. My company is ABUSIVE to its employees, worse than any patient. My supervisor's supervisor needs to walk his happy ass into work and cover some shifts. Maybe if he gets kicked in the face he'll understand how truly acute our unit is.

It sounds like your company has no intentions of addressing the problem. Honestly, they need guards in your unit. Perhaps your supervisor needs to report them to law enforcement for reckless endangerment or something equally as serious. I don't know much about how these things are handled, but there has to be some way to address this effectively! Your supervisor could have been seriously injured or killed.

She's home, and says she looks worse than she feels. My question is what will the hospital do to make sure this doesn't happem again? I'm off night shifts, fortunately. I only do them now as a favor or if I switch with someone. I'm doing one tomorrow because my mom has a CT scan in the morning. I don't think I'll be picking up anymore, though.

Well, I made it through night-shift without getting my face kicked in. My supervisor has been out a week though, and they still don't know who is covering for her. I mean, WTF? Although a mass text went out yesterday from the central staffing, saying they are desperate for staff coverage this weekend. I bet they are. It sucks to suck. Normally I'd pick up because I need the bonus pay, but we're supposed to get snow and I'm too afraid they'll use 3 inches of snow as a "weather emergency" that will allow them to mandate. Nope, I'm not the one. And I can't leave my mom home in bad weather anyway, so...🖕

So, I think I've mentioned before tgat on the unit I transferred from had a fish tank. And they shut down the unit the fish tank is on due to staffing problems. The only people who made sure the fish got fed were me and and this other nurse. I'd buy vacation feeder blocks to put in the tank to make sure they ate when he and I were both off. I mean, we'd ask other people if they'd feed the fish and get told no. No one had any fucks to give about these fish.
So when I heard the other nurse transferred to the resource department, I asked my former manager if I could have the fish, because I was worried no one would feed them, and my bestie is an aquarium enthusiast and would give them a good home. Also, the fish were too big for the tank. He told me no, he'd make sure the fish were taken care of now that the other nurse left.
So, a couple weeks ago my former supervisor initiates a text conversation with me and tells the aquarium guy took the fish and released them into his pond because I was right, they were too big for the tank. And they were getting tropical fish instead. How nice, I said. They re-opened that unit and the patients will enjoy them, and I'm sure tropical will be beautiful, and staff will remember to feed them since they're working on that wing again.
So tonight I had a girl on my floor who got pulled from my former unit. She just tells me, off hand, how one of the nurses up there took the fish I had asked for and gave them to her neighbor. So he lied to me...for no apparent reason.
I'm so pissed. You let someone else take the fish, whatever. Don't tell me some story about the fish living their best lives in a pond somewhere, especially when I didn't even ask about the damn fish again. I'm not a child.
He's off on an FMLA because he had back surgery, and I'm so tempted to talk shit to him. I won't, because he's a manager and I'm a peon, and this is technically stupid, but I hope he doesn't try talking to me again about anything non-work related or fish related.

If he does try to get personal, just ask how his neighbour is going, looking after the fish.
Then walk away.

Were those fish native to your area? If not, going into a pond could have been lethal, and if the person he actually gave them to wasn't knowledgeable about fish, that, too, could have endangered their lives. I hate it when people are unthinking about the welfare of other living creatures.
