I suppose a link to the story might be helpful, but the headline is very disturbing.

Partially because I know many people are simply perusing the headlines only these days.........and partially because sometimes that's ALL it takes is these goofy headlines to let ou know where they're headed.
I think these kinda things are excellent examples of choosing a tiny minority of everyday examples of crime to report on in order to push an agenda. (Apologies to anyone offended by the term tiny minority)

The Lollipop Guild accepts your apology.
As for your premise... yeah. We need to fix our system of education.

But we already have the best and brightest of intellectuals in charge.
I'm still mulling over your past comments on Asian students and how they're basically fact packed automatons for their parents.
I'm not sure I ever thought being a successful student was really anything more than actually learning the lessons and being able to complete tests to prove that you learned it.
I get the arguments for artistic and inventive thinking..........but im-lame-o, those kinda people tend to gravitate towards those sides of their personalities anyway.

I'm sorry....... break it down for me........ when a person needs to use a particular lesson in the future, aren't they simply regurgitating the information that they were given earlier?

Answering a question on a test is one thing. Knowing how to use the information in real world application is another. Just ask anyone who still can't balance their checkbook yet learned basic addition and subtraction when they were 6 years old.

in your opinion........just what are typical Americans being taught now?
I know what you mean cuz I figure the typical American can not balance their own checkbook......but where does the fault lie? If they should have had it at 6, where did it go? Or were they simply passed along to be with their classmates?
Like most modern day problems, it seems to me it's their own doing or undoing

Part of it has to do with kids not being taught the practical applications of what they are learning.
Part of it has to do with calculators being allowed in class at way too early a stage. I doubt first graders are allowed calculators but you get my point.
And part of it is simply the lack of training in critical thinking which is part and parcel of my first statement.
Oddly enough, I was just watching a "Fail Army" video on youtube where a female high school/college student was baffled by this question: "If you are driving 80 miles an hour, how long will it take you to travel 80 miles?"
Yeah. We need more females in STEM careers.
