I could see how there might be an issue for someone when their physical form is not decisively clear in the traditional sense. In which case, I expect it'd be up to the individual to choose what feels right for them personally. Hopefully the necessary support is available to help them cope with and overcome any trouble. In any case, I don't think anyone should be undertaking life-altering procedures or treatments before they reach adulthood and their mind and body are as close to fully mature as is reasonably possible. Agreed, intersexed people are not the issue. But most transgender are not born intersexed.
The problem is people with healthy genitals having them cut up and turned into nonworking replicas of something else to match some social construct of gender behavior.
Yes, adults can do what they want.
But should doctors be advising even adults against this? I thought the transgender position was always that a woman can have a penis? If so, why cut it off?
Before the surgeons begin their work, perhaps the psychologists or even psychiatrists should do theirs by assessing an individual's mental health and reason for wanting to undergo such a life-altering change. Perhaps they have a good reason for their desiring a change, perhaps not. Either way, I sincerely believe that such an elementary precaution is warranted in the situation. I also know that I certainly don't possess the expertise to make such a judgement, so leave it to the experts.

I've known a few transfolks rather well.
I still think society is coming to grips with this. I just don't think mutilation of healthy organs can ever be a good thing and I think we need to develop a more 'natural' approach to transgender.

For me, I don't mind what people want to do, provided they are of sound mind and body when they do it. Because with something like this, if they change their mind afterwards, they'll be in a world of pain.

Honestly, I think sex change surgeries which involved physical mutilation are medical malpractice. I don't care if they're adults. They suffer from delusions.
Again, living as the opposite sex's gender role is one thing. Genital mutilation is quite another.

There are many practices - in both advanced and primitive cultures - that make no sense to me. Practices that include piercings, tattoos, body alterations and more... However, you know what our species is like... one culture's madness is another culture's sacred traditions.

Well we are rightfully horrified by Muslim cultures which perform routine clitorectomies on babies. So I believe we can take ethical stands on these issues.
In Queer Theory a woman can have a penis and not have to cut it off. That's a healthier approach, methinks.

Just so long as her penis isn't bigger than mine... In return, I promise that my man-boobs won't be larger than hers. Fair's fair.
