I respect that answer even though I'd like someone to get to the bottom of that picture of him "drinking with students."

Well, it seems that, while the phrase is perfectly Orwellian, he did not write it, but it has been hammered into our consciousness through repetition that he did... sort of like the "liberal at 20 and conservative at 40" thing was never uttered by Churchill.

The only reason I discovered this is because I googled the phrase to check on my wording... and found out there are three different versions! So I picked the one closest to the one in my memory. Yeah.
