Indiana Woman Who Was Reportedly Denied Protective Order Killed by Estranged Husband in Murder-SuicideBy Inside Edition Staff First Published: 9:36 AM PST, December 28, 2022 Julie Yow-Schmidtke was reportedly pregnant at the time of her death. Just days before Christmas, an Indiana woman who was reportedly denied a protective order against her estranged husband whom she recently filed for divorce from was killed by him in an apparent murder-suicide, according to reports. Julie Yow-Schmidtke was killed in an apparent murder-suicide last week in Columbus, Indiana, and her family says the tragedy occurred just 10 days after she was denied a restraining order against her estranged husband, WLKY reported. Police responded to a call for a shootout at the home just before 9 p.m. on December 19, and when officers got there, they found Julie and her husband, Charles Schmidtke, dead, Local Today reported. Investigators believe Charles broke into his estranged wife’s home and shot her multiple times before turning the gun on himself, Local Today reported. Julie had two children from a previous relationship and was pregnant at the time of her death, according to reports. The couple had only been married for three months, and Julie’s family told WLKY that Charles attacked her three months into the marriage, which led to things going south. "I really thought that that was going to get her a protection order," her sister, Lori Griffin told WLKY. "Then when she goes to court with all the evidence that she had, even police checking on her for her safety, and they denied her, and then 10 days later, she's murdered in her own home in front of her kids." Court records obtained by WLKY show Julie filed for divorce just five days before her death.
10 days to get a gun for protection and she opted not to?
And what's the point of even mentioning a fetus here?

Some people aren't comfortable around guns.
Amazing but true.

And what's the point of even mentioning a fetus here? So maybe she didn't feel having a gun in a house with children in it was a safe idea?

Well, she certainly doesn't have to worry about it anymore. Problem solved

The gun wouldn't protect her if she lacked the ability to fire it at the attacker. You assume she would be able to.

Why are you assuming she couldn't? Because she was a girl? izzat it?

Amazingly enough, just picking up a weapon doesn't imbue you with all knowledge nor make you a crack shot.

You think everyone is cool shooting to kill. Gender isn't important. What good is having a gun for protection if one is unwilling to use it? So maybe people who don't own a gun figure its better to not have one in the house where it could be used against them

It's not a matter of being cool with it. It's a matter of survival. If you're in fear for your life, PROTECT IT. Otherwise I really can't offer you too much support if YOU feel it isn't worth protecting.
Well, then I would EXPECT those people with such firm beliefs to never call the police who show up with guns on their hip. Does that seem inconsistent to you?

Just because I don't feel I could shoot someone doesn't mean I can't call someone trained to shoot people.

Even though I've also pointed out that cops often are not the best of shots? Especially compared to the devoted gun owners that you wanna remove guns from

Most women can't handle a gun. I guess that's a personal responsibility issue?

Are you unfamiliar with guns?
They make several models that are smaller and easier to aim and fire.
Women are buying guns in record numbers the last several years. IIRC
My wife likes to shoot our Sig P232. It's pretty lightwieght and as simple as pointing your finger at the target, imo.

I'm talking more about the psychological aspect. It may be record numbers but the vast majority of them still wouldn't go there.

Some people aren't comfortable around guns. Amazing but true. Who knew? Ant-mac, you know the backstory of why I own a gun and the training I received when I got a license to carry concealed. About women and guns in general, in rural areas most men hunt for food, and most women know how guns work and could use them if need be. But in densely populated cities, or suburbs, the circumstances are different. It can't be generalized strictly on gender. Edit: as requested by abbey... permutojoe.

Explain your mindset to joe.
My view is simply when the chips are down, it's YOU........or your attacker. I'm rooting for you
