Effective October 1, 2022, all VWP travelers intending to enter the United States by land will be required to obtain an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to application for admission at land border ports of entry.

CBP encourages travelers to apply for a travel authorization at least 72 hours in advance of their anticipated arrival at a U.S. land port of entry.

Canadian citizen's passports are NOT required to be valid for six months past their intended date of departure. Their passports must only be valid up until the date of their intended departure.

Canadian Citizens entering the United States by air are required to present a valid passport, or a NEXUS card when departing from Canada. Please be advised that if arriving in the United States on a flight not pre-cleared by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Canada, Global entry kiosks cannot be used by passengers only holding a NEXUS card, and the regular inspection lanes have to be used.

By land and sea (including ferries) - Canadian citizens traveling to the United States by land or sea are required to present one of the travel documents listed below, and may generally visit the United States for up to six months. CBP will accept:
Canadian passport
Enhanced Driver's License/Enhanced Identification Card
NEXUS, FAST/EXPRES
SENTRI enrollment cards.
Children: Canadian citizens 15 years old and younger arriving by land or sea from contiguous territory may present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate or a Canadian Citizenship Card. Canadian Citizens 16 and older must have a valid passport, unless traveling as part of an organized group described below.
Groups of Children: Canadian citizen children under age 19 arriving by land or sea from contiguous territory and traveling with a school group, religious group, social/cultural organization, or sports team, may also present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Naturalization Certificate, or a Canadian Citizenship Card.
The group should provide, on organizational letterhead: The name of the group and supervising adult, a list of the children on the trip, the primary home address, phone number, date of birth, place of birth, and name of at least one parent or legal guardian for each child.
A written and signed statement of the supervising adult certifying that he or she has obtained parental or legal guardian consent for each participating child.
Canadians coming as a Treaty Trader, family, fiancés/fiancées (to include their children and their spouses children) of the United States that are legal permanent residents are required to have a visa to enter the United States.

Native American Indians born in Canada with at least 50% American Indian blood are exempt from having a visa and passport to enter the United States by land. They should have their tribal identity card to present to the CBP Officer. If an American Indian is arriving into the United States by air, the traveler will be required to have a passport.

The burden of proof that the Canadian citizen is not an intended immigrant (plans to make the United States their primary residence) is always on the applicant. There is no set period of time Canadians must wait to re-enter the United States after the end of their stay, but if it appears to the CBP officer that the person applying for entry is spending more time over-all in the United States than in Canada, it will be up to the traveler to prove to the officer that they are not de-facto U.S. residents. One of the ways to do this is to demonstrate significant ties to their home country, including proof of employment, residency, etc.

Residents of Canada who are landed immigrants generally need a passport and visa to enter the United States, unless they are a citizen of a country eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). If you are coming by land and is a citizen of a country eligible for the VWP, you are only required to have a valid passport.

If coming by air and sea, you will need to have advance approval to travel through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). The ESTA application fee is $21.

To obtain a list of countries eligible for the VWP, please visit the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website.

Boston, MA - Unionized health care workers earned better pay and received better non-cash benefits, with little difference in their work hours when compared to non-unionized workers, according to a new study, “Trends in Labor Unionization Among US Health Care Workers, 2009-2021”, published on December 27, 2022 in JAMA.

“This study is the first to systemically investigate the landscape of labor unionization among the US health care workforce and its associated economic effects,” said senior author Xiaojuan Li, PhD, Instructor in the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute.

Labor unionization efforts have resurged in the US, and union membership has been shown to improve worker conditions in some industries. However, little is known about labor unionization and its economic effects among health care workers. It remains unclear how labor unionization in health care has changed over the years and what benefits, if any, health care workers gain from unionizing.

To bridge this gap, the study team examined the prevalence of labor unionization among health care workers and its associations with employee pay, non-cash benefits, and work hours across the health care workforce in the United States. The team studied health care workers who participated in the US Census Bureau Current Population Survey and Annual Social and Economic Supplement between 2009 and 2021. This nationally representative, population-based household survey allowed for a sample of over 14,000 self-identified health care workers, including physicians and dentists, advanced practitioners, nurses, therapists, and technicians and support staff.

Study researchers found that labor unionization rates were low, at an overall prevalence of 13.2%, with no significant change from 2009 through 2021. Labor unionization was associated with better pay and better benefits for health care workers. Unionized workers reported earning $123 more per week than nonunionized workers, receiving better health insurance from their employer (both in terms of employer’s contribution and the kind of insurance plan), and higher chance of having a pension or other retirement benefits at work. However, compared with nonunionized, unionized workers reported slightly more weekly work hours.

“The associated benefits of unionization are striking but not surprising,” said Ahmed Ahmed, fourth-year medical student at Harvard Medical School and first author of the study. “Unions collectively bargain for their members, which appears to improve both employee compensation and pay gaps between workers.”

“Future causal analysis of the relationships, however, is needed,” said Dr. Li. “And given the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health care workforce, investigating whether unionizing could help mitigate burnout, will be important.”
