doesn't mean that all of my "successes" were due to some "privilege." I actually had to work hard in my life for many of the things I have and have had. They weren't given to me as a favor.
Example: After my mom died and dad got injured and could no longer work, in order to stay at the private school I was enrolled in, I had to join the work-study program: I worked and my "pay" was deducted from my tuition. I knew all the guys (I went to an all boys school) in the program. Every one of us was white or white Hispanic. There wasn't a black kid in the program despite the school having many black students, most of whom were from "The Projects" and objectively more poor than even us kids in work-study.
I think it's easy to see which kids were "privileged" in that situation if we are to consider "privilege" as "getting something for nothing."
During my college years, I also was in a work-study program to defray some of my costs. I also worked a full-time job to pay off the rest. Yup. I had a part-time job, a full-time job, and a full course load for two majors. Most of the black kids on campus had scholarships (given only to black students) or were on athletic scholarships.
But I don't consider those kids "privileged." They had to work for the grades and physical skills that got them their scholarships. I had a couple academic scholarships myself, but nothing approaching a "free ride." Those were hard to come by for middle/lower class white kids.
Outside of school (and after graduation), I worked hard at my jobs over the years. I took them seriously. Because of those traits, I got raises and promotions over the employees (black, Hispanic, and female) who showed up late, horsed around during their shifts, or just generally fucked off and put in a minimum of effort. Is having a good work ethic a "privilege"?
At least for a while.
There were more than a few times that I got passed over in favor of promoting POC and women who hadn't put in anywhere near the same amount of effort as me. Those times, even my work ethic wasn't even a "privilege" and my skin color and dangling genitalia were an absolute hindrance. And I suspect that it's even worse these days.
In one of my last jobs before getting laid off due to the financial crisis, I was managing a small staff (less than 20) and every time there was an opening in my department, I had to listen to the HR person caution me "Watch your diversity" almost daily as I sifted through hundreds of resumes. Mind you, out of my current staff, only about 40% were male and only 3 of them were white. Yup. about 17% of my entire department were white males and HR was up my ass to "watch my diversity." Doesn't sound like there's any privilege being a white member of the "patriarchy."
Now, I'm not saying that what some people call "white privilege" doesn't exist. I'm sure that it does, but it's not the only reason white people (particularly white men) succeed and to suggest that notion is repugnant. It's sexist. It's racist. And it negates all the hard work and effort that I and others endured.
And anyone who tells me to "check my privilege" had better damn well better be screaming that as they run the fuck away.

Privilege is an aggregate term. Leave the zooming in to the individual to the right, which is all they know how to do.

I'm offended by the term because it's a generalization.
If I made a generalization about black people needing us to lower the criteria for college entry because they aren't quite bright enough, people would (rightfully) scream, "racism!"
Why isn't the opposite true?

If you're that offended by it there must be some underlying issue. I'll let you sort that our yourself.

We could get into a convo on the self-flagellation being espoused and taught by our intellectual class.
Sort of a Passion of the Wannabe Crucified?

The believing part doesn't really factor in for me here........ just saying, they did a pretty good job educating you nonetheless, right?
They didn't simply pass you on without making sure you'd actually picked up what they were laying down.

I studied with Jesuits, Abbey. Many would argue that there's no better education.

I have little doubt of that.
I just think it's an area where we could find agreement for once. The Left as it exists today has been targeting and abusing religious types for decades now. There's no tolerance with them.
This is how I found myself, not a Bible-thumper mnyself, sticking up for them and their beliefs for quite awhile now. I see one group as the much bigger threat to our freedoms.

I'll stick up for the religious types too... depending on the circumstances.
For example I'm really not going out of my way to toss a good word at Westboro (sp?) Baptist Church for any reason, but I find the "magical sky fairy" style of insults generally come from bigots and morons who are trying to be bigots and I call them out for it.
That said, defending their right to believe in something should in no way indicate that I share such beliefs... which is the most annoying weapon deployed by both "sides" in political discourse (being nice here) these days.
I'm pro-2nd Amendment, but that shouldn't make anyone feel that I'm a card-carrying Trumpanzee
I'm pro-choice, but that doesn't make me a baby-killing commie.
The "all or nothing" partisan mindset is exactly why America is failing... has failed... and I don't want any part of that blame.
