It has been a while since I have updated this series, but - let's face it - a broken leg and three cancer diagnoses were a bit distracting. Also, a bit of it comes from my desire to talk about Chinese drivers, which is a big topic. So, then I thought it might be fun to talk about how the Chinese walk so that you could have a foundation for understanding how they drive. Then I thought, it's probably best that I explain the basics of being Chinese based on my observations and direct interactions.
First and foremost, you need to believe that you are the most important person on the face of the Earth... unless you're a peasant girl, at which point you are just "qu zai dami" (a maggot in the rice). But let's stick with the city dwellers and the children of the one child (sometimes two) policy.
Since the moment you were born, your parents and grandparents have been telling you how awesome you are; how perfect you are; how beautiful or handsome you are; etc. Dear readers, think for a moment about what sort of individual is being nurtured under this belief system: a narcissist.
Second: YOU are the future of your entire family. You must be more successful than your parents. The "face" of your entire family is on your shoulders. If you ever forget, your parents, grandparents, and even your teachers will remind you.
Dear readers, what do you think is going to happen when our budding narcissist has been burdened with the awesome responsibility of fulfilling the hopes and dreams of all previous generations? Right! You end up with a person devoid of empathy because empathy is an impediment to success. You end up with a sociopath.
No word of a lie, I have purposely done the "yawn test" is every single class over the past 12 years (when I first started putting the pieces together) and the number of sympathetic yawns I have witnessed in return is about 5% or less of the total. In a culture filled with sociopathic narcissists (narcissistic sociopaths?), human rights violations seem pretty understandable despite being horrible.
I think that many of these folks mellow a bit as they get older and they realize that the real world simply cannot accommodate success for everyone and they seem to be raising their kids with more reasonable expectations... whenever possible. I add that caveat because in a culture where sociopathy is the norm, empathy is a sign of weakness (especially among men - "moods are for cattle and loveplay!") and going against the grain is as big a crime as murder to many.
Now what you see is a society full of psychologically damaged people who are stressed to the breaking point by their own culturally driven cognitive dissonance and hemmed in by their version of "face." Every individual is a ticking time bomb ready to self-destruct or lash out at the least provocation.
Imagine if the government could harness that explosiveness under the guise of "nationalism"....

I must have come by it on my own, more naturally.

To be honest, it sounds like most Chinese people belong in House Harkonnen, not House Atreides.

That's about right.
But there are no Fremen to counter them.

The Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV, has made sure of that. And he promised his daughter as well “Think on it, Chani: that princess will have the name, yet she’ll live as less than a concubine - never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she’s bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine - history will call us wives.”

Prometheus - On the subject of how to be a Chinese, the next obvious question is how to be a Chinese leader... There are some very alarming rumours currently circulating on the internet. Any idea about what's going on with Xi Jinping?

What it looks like is Xi doing a little housecleaning before the subject of his 3rd term officially comes up and this mini-purge has led some folks to speculate that there has been some sort of coup.
This is 2022, the year where we don't get what we hope for....

Yeah, I thought it all sounded a bit strange... But then I remembered this is 2022, the year where the laws of reality no longer mean shit.
