I'm sorry, but when I heard him say he completed a full day's work and got paid just 78 cents, this is the first thing that popped into my head...
Excellent bit
I also think it's important we have access to a conversion chart to show what people were paid at any time in the past and what they paid for things....... so we can better compare the complaints of today with the past.
I still roll my eyes hard at anyone claiming 40 hours a week at McDs is even in the same neighborhood as coal miners from the early 20th century

It isn't just the era in which people lived that matters, but also the area. Cost of living versus minimum wage varies from county to county, state to state, country to country... However, in almost every era and every area, the minimum wage is never enough to cover the cost of living.

Exactly. I wonder how often people may have accepted what they thought was an Upgrade........higher pay, etc etc..........only to discover in moving to another area, that they were actually taking a downgrade?
I think that's why it's called minimum wage in the first place. Entry level jobs at fast food joints and other similar jobs were NEVER supposed to be something you could afford to work 40/week and support your wife and 9 kids on.

Minimum wage doesn't always apply only to "entry level jobs". Employers often pay the least amount they can get away with. This might sound like good business practise in the short term, but it can often have wide-ranging social impacts.

For starters, the actual minimum wage is $0............I think it mostly comes down to the training and skill level required. If pretty much EVERYONE can do what you do, then you're really not in a great bargaining position to start.
Employers of course want all of the controllable costs as low as possible. I understand that. Why do so many not get it? As Milton Friedman pointed out, when WE sell something we want to get the most $Money we can.......but when we BUY something, we want to get it as inexpensively as possible.
Now, more than ever, people have the ability to pick and choose who they do business with. These so called social impacts are just another method of forced participation, imo. You know how often I see these charitable works and fund raisers in a business setting and figure they're only doing it because of the PC/shaming culture we now live in? Meanwhile, people can't be bothered to just do it themselves?

1. That's nit a minimum wwage, that's working for free... or slavery. 2. It's not humane, but it's very Human. 3. Now, more than ever, some people have the ability to pick and choose. Some people never have a choice.

1. Just pointing out the obvious. Your parents or relatives never gave you the bare minimum for your labor?
2. Weird those two words are so similar, right?
3. I'm finding the excuses for those 'somes' to running thinner and thinner.

1. No, I received set weekly pocket money regardless. Except for when I was given a lump sum to cover a certain period of time. 2. Yeah, it's a constant source of amusement for me. 3. Then why don't you go and tell these people that to their faces?

I really do not like comparing life in the US.........to absolutely horrible places elsewhere. Unless it's to prove to people HERE that they really don't have it all that rough.

Life does not cease to exist beyond the borders of your country, nor mine. When I speak of "people", I'm not picking or choosing. If I wish to be more specific, I'll indicate that.

Well, I consider those people 'people' as well.
Just saying I grow tired of the complaints from Americans that do not realize just how fortunate we actually are........ heck, there's people risking their lives to get here and they know and appreciate the difference.

I doubt you'll see many shops either... Certainly not shops that those people would be allowed near.

I don't really see much difference between Democrats and Republicans... They're both right-wing political parties to one degree or another.

I've heard many shop owners have complained to no avail.......and even closed up and moved since they can't get customers to come in with human feces all over the front walk.

I've upset quite a few lifelong Republicans with that kernel of truth that both of our parties are pretty much on the same team.

Truth hurts... But regardless of their similarities or dissimilarities, all political parties globally have some common traits... 1. To gain power. 2. To retain power.
