Homes Average Size of US Homes, Decade by Decade It's nearly tripled since 1950 By Newser Editors, Newser Staff Posted May 29, 2016
(Newser) – 24/7 Wall St has a list that shows how the typical American home has changed from 1920 to 2014. And that mainly means the homes have gotten way bigger. The list tracks various stats year by year, including average square feet. Here's a sample, with the figure referring to the average floor area of a new single-family home:
1920: 1,048 square feet 1930: 1,129 1940: 1,177 1950: 983 1960: 1,289 1970: 1,500 1980: 1,740 1990: 2,080 2000: 2,266 2010: 2,392 2014: 2,657

The 50's seem to be an outlier. I'm guessing that the smaller size was due to the post-WWII boom in tract housing. Otherwise, the size increases have been following a pretty steady pattern.

Yeah, thought the same.
But I do wonder WHY there isn't more push to a return to that sorta developments? A repeat of Levittown in terms of size of homes and lot sizes? At least as a percentage of every new suburban area. The only real change I'd suggest would be 2 stall garages minimum, since many of those had just 1 if a garage at all.

How do you know who the lower classes are (so you can help them of course) if you don't live better than them?

With the loss of being the world's ONLY large scale manufacturer to drive our economic boom and home building/ownership......... I just wonder WHERE all the money is coming from to buy all of these McMansions?
And if capitalism is about finding a niche, selling to top end and low end alike, then where is the entry level new home market? (I could say the same for first time new car buyers, but the Govt has a big say in size/safety there)
That general attitude kicks in about the 0:59 mark here...........

Have you ever heard the term, "service economy"?

Have you ever heard the term, "service economy"?
Yes, I often giggle and mock it's notion whenever someone is telling me about the horrible service they receive from employees these days.
I would say Americans are quickly catching up with the French for poor reputations as offering good service.

Aside from high cost 'services' like medical care or legal assistance...........where's the same room for profits with merely being the middle person?
Amazon or Walmart does it because they make a penny on a million things and that adds up. But the vast majority of entry level service jobs in the US? This is why that 'living wage' argument is so silly to me.

1. The hospitals and doctors ARE the middle people. Legal services ARE the middle people
2. Then your boi, Ronnie shouldn't have shipped all those jobs overseas if the US wasn't ready for a service economy.

1. I thought that's what I said? I'm guessing there's a few other lines of work where being the middle man makes good coin, like real estate.........but working at Walmart or Burger King as just the person checking someone out? Where's the expertise? Where's the room for made up huge profits to exist?
2. No, he shouldn't have. Just as he shouldn't have cut that deal of amnesty for millions of Illegals. I swear I'll never understand the Ronnie worshiping.

1. I don't understand where you're coming from. Employers pay as little as they can in order to maximize profits.
2. But he did send the jobs overseas so his rich buddies could get richer. YOU worship those guys.

1. Yet there are plenty of examples of highly paid management types? I'm simply pointing out in manufacturing you have something that may be $1 worth of ingredients turned into something you can sell for $100. It's got a built in profit margin. On the other end of the spectrum, a McDonalds has pretty slim margins, but they're just relying on the Volume of sales to achieve profits.
2. No, I prefer these guys to politicians. There's a fella here in WI running for higher office. He claims to support Unions and higher pay......so people can have more money in their pockets. WHY? So he can vote to spend more and raise their taxes yet again?

1. IIRC, the average margin on manufactured goods is about 10%. That's across all market regions.
What's the margin on a lawyer's billable hour?
2. Yes. You support the people fucking us over to increase their profit margins.

1. What? They don't deserve every penny for acquiring that admirable education?
2. imo, that'd be the politicians........mostly lawyers there, too.

1. Why are you dodging the question? What's the margin on a lawyer's billable hour?
2. What profit does the politician gain?
The bribe from the corporate lobbyist who gets paid by the new profits generated by the politicians siding with the corporations.
It's the corporations, stupid!

1. How would I know that? Ya think Google's gonna have a clear answer for us?
2. Politician arrives in DC with a relatively average worth to serve the public. Leaves years later (if at all) with $Millions?
It's the Govt, stupid. If it weren't as large, as corrupt, as INTO EVERY FACET of our lives as it is........there wouldn't be the presence of corporate lobbyists and bribes.

1. Exactly. So stop saying that manufacturing has better margins
2. You are confusing "profit" with "wealth accumulation."
Words have meanings.
3. "Humans are going to human... unless those humans represent a corporation!"
Do you ever get tired of contradicting yourself?
Lobbying has driven government into every facet of our lives.

1. Why does that NOT seem a given to you? Raw materials are usually cheaper than the end products they create.
Right. Cuz lobbying isn't a means of defense against ever more Govt?

1. Think about Milton and his pencil and remember that the margin is still only about 10%
2. When you have to increase your staff just to deal with lobbyists, you end up with more government.
