In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories.
Crew member shot dead on ‘Law & Order’ set in NYC: cops By Jack Morphet, Tina Moore and Amanda Woods July 19, 2022
A crew member working for “Law & Order: Organized Crime’’ was gunned down at the TV show’s Brooklyn set early Tuesday — in a shooting that could have been pulled straight out of the script, authorities said.
Johnny Pizarro, a 31-year-old married dad of three, had just started his shift and was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that was saving a parking space on North Henry Street near Norman Avenue in Greenpoint around 5:15 a.m. when another man suddenly opened the driver’s door and blasted him, officials and pals said.

Why We Can't Have Nice Things: 'Good Samaritan' Who Saved Indiana Mall Goers Is Denounced as No Hero By Alex Parker | Jul 18, 2022
Bloomington traffic anchor. Murrow Award-winning journalist Justin Kollar was flabbergasted by the chief’s framing. He expressed his dismay in a tweet:
“The term ‘Good Samaritan’ came from a Bible passage of a man from Samaria who stopped on the side of the road to help a man… I cannot believe we live in a world where the term can equally apply to someone *killing* someone… my God.”
“It’s against the @simonmalls code of conduct for anyone to carry a weapon inside the mall. However, Greenwood Police are thankful the…man was.”

1. Wear protection. 2. I don't understand the reaction of the UPD... I'd have thought the highlight of any cop's day was getting to shoot someone.

Cops today can not win. They shoot........and they risk their jobs, pensions and even getting imprisoned.
They don't shoot or respond as quickly as people demand? They're called out and threatened with replacement and possibly charges.

It's not a binary proposition. It's a case of responding in an appropriate manner to the situation they encounter... Appropriate.

What is 'normal' these days? What is acceptable? Where does any notion of morality even come from?

another piece to the puzzle, as far as opinions go......... some people ran and were elected on defunding and pulling back the reins on the police. But now won't accept any of the responsibility for the rise in crime?
Fox News Arrests in Chicago plummet to historic lows as crime rises and police admittedly pull back: 'No way' Emma Colton Tue, July 19, 2022 at 6:28 AM
Chicago police have arrested the fewest number of suspects in at least 20 years amid a crime wave that has continued raging in the city since 2020.
"In the past, I might see a guy with a gun in his waistband, and I’d jump out and chase him," one decorated officer said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. "No way I’d do that now."
Police made arrests in 12% of crime cases in 2021, which is the lowest rate since 2001, when the data was first released, the Chicago-Sun Times analysis found. The number of arrests in Chicago peaked in 2005 when arrests were made in nearly 31% of reported crimes. That number has been on the decline since, the data shows.
The number of traffic stops and tickets have also dropped, and the number of investigative stops fell by more than 50% between 2019 and 2021. Fewer crimes are also being reported to the police department by both residents and officers on beats, according to the analysis.

What is 'normal' these days? What is acceptable? Where does any notion of morality even come from? Standardized police training, based upon the advice and experience of law enforcement experts. Candidates should be fully screened and tested, throughout the entire training process, to ensure they are physically and psychologically acceptable. And do you want to know what is acceptable? 1. Police officers responding to a situation with caution, not paranoia. 2. Police officers being held responsible for their actions. 3. Police officers being held to the same legal standards as everyone else. 4. Mandatory fines, imprisonment, dismissal or full re-training process for any infraction... whichever is deemed most appropriate by preset rules and regulations. You get the idea...

I gotta disagree on that........how do you deputize someone, giving them authority.........and then expect them to enforce all the laws on the books, while giving them no real power or immunity?
I get the idea.........but I also know there's already a shortage of viable candidates.........good luck going forward. They'll be forced to lower the bar just as they have in many other areas. All because THEY created the situation. It's the tried and true Hegelian dialectic. The government creates or exploits a problem in which attributes blame to others. The people react by asking the govt for more protecton and help (safety and security) to help solve the problem.

They don't need immunity if they're operating within the lawful guidelines of their position... and their power comes from their position as a LEO. Then they need to offer more suitable benefits and rewards for more suitable candidates. And tax the citizenry more if necessary to pay for it.

The way it's been explained to me........is they must maintain themselves on a level slightly above who they're dealing with at all times. That's where the authority comes in. Now, I'm not under the illusion they're any better than anyone else........by any means, but like a working environment, there are bosses and employees.
They've done the exact opposite. Even someone like jpat, who most agreed exemplified what we'd all want in a police officer, was driven out of the field altogether by these irrational policies and expectations. And more importantly, he's convinced his children to seek other lines of work in this environment.
oooo, boy. You had to go there? why don't we just cut to the chase then? Eliminate all wages, make everyone work for the Govt and let them instruct us all on what to do, where to work, how to live, etc etc etc? Cuz at this rate, more and more of peoples' incomes will be needed to provide for all of the takers. (Keep in mind, your Govt may have been a bit more restrained spending-wise than mine, but it's gotten completely out of control at this point.) Globalists unite!

1. Which is covered in what I said. 2. You get what you pay for. 3. Actually, I was just trolling you. I think most citizens already pay enough tax... it's the government that misspends it. Closer scrutiny of government spending might ensure the tax money goes to the right places for a change. Well, technically, aren't the police government employees... or public servants?

3. True
They got rid of the Golden Fleece Award
They are........but what are they expected to do? It used to be stop crime/criminals. Somewhere along the line, the politicians became criminals and now side with them over the police.
Not to mention, the public has grown overly dependent and demands the police do far more than they were ever asked to do in the past.

2. There's an old saying, "Every nation gets the government it deserves." Make of that what you will. 3. The police are certainly overstretched with their responsibilities, some of which they are not equipped or poorly equipped to deal with. This is why other appropriate government agencies, with expertise in other areas, need to be fully funded to help share the burden.

2. My fellow Americans deserve everything they're getting
3. Agreed.......though whether or not any of those 'extra tasks' are the responsibility of anyone in govt is debatable, too. Though, maybe we should invest in a massive mental health center for the entire country? ...... place in DC for good measure

2. With that sort of attitude, you should consider running for public office. 3. In fact, mental health was a major consideration I was driving at in my previous post.

3. I try not to keep it a secret.......my almost total intolerance for the mentally ill these days.
Does it seem to you like there's anywhere near as high a percentage of them around in Australia as here?

There are a lot of genuine sufferers, whose voices are being drowned out by the self-centred, self-entitled "pay attention to me" mob. If you're looking for someone who has their finger on the pulse of Australian society, I regret to inform you...
