BRAVE NEW SCHOOLS 77% tested at Baltimore high school read at elementary level, some at kindergarten levelMassive budget still means students failing in huge numbers WND News Services By WND News Services Published February 3, 2022 at 12:15pm (FOX BALTIMORE) – A Baltimore City teacher came forward with devastating information that showed 77% of students tested at one high school are reading at an elementary school level. The teacher works at Patterson High School, one of the largest high schools in Baltimore with a 61% graduation rate and a nearly $12 million budget. We agreed not to identify this source who fears retribution for giving Project Baltimore the results of iReady assessments. Advertisement - story continues below iReady assessments are given in Baltimore City Schools to help determine at which grade level a student is performing in math and reading. The scores are not made public. If the media requests them, the district will redact most of the results. But Project Baltimore obtained the results for all of the students tested at Patterson High School.

Let me guess: you want to focus on the amount rather than discuss how it could be used better.

At some point, it'd just be cheaper to send kids abroad for their education. At least they'd return with the ability to read..... .......maybe.

However, 25 out of the 30 lowest ranking school systems are in "red" states while only 5 of the top 20 school systems are in "red" states.
That seems to me to be a bit more about "what" is being taught as well as "how well."

There's also the methods used in that ranking system.
All I expect from public schools is the basics. Once those are covered and down pat........libraries and the internet can provide just about anything to anyone, imo
But failing on those basics? Yikes. Gloomy outlook.

1. Show examples of poor metric choice
2. Yup. All those anti-Trump books can be found in the library and we all know there is never any lies on the internet...
3. Then tell your buddies at the RepubliKlan National Convention to start making education a priority

3. Then tell your buddies at the RepubliKlan National Convention to start making education a priority
Tell your buddies that vote Democrat to make their children's education the highest priority. Bust up the teacher's union and demand more/better results for every dollar spent.

My buddies who vote democrat live in states where the quality of education is already high. Why would they want to change that?

Martha's Vineyard does have excellent schools, huh?

Nantucket... Boston... hell, just anywhere in Mass. It's the number one ranked public school system in the country and they only spend about $17k/student.
NJ comes in at #3 for quality and they spend about $20K/student.
Mass. school get quite a bang for their buck

only? What Do other countries spend per child?
Massachusetts itself is a pretty skewed area, isn't it? I can remember watching This Old House in the 80s and being shocked by the asking prices for dilapidated old homes. Hmmmm, so maybe $17,000 in today's modern dollars is actually a huge bargain considering?
looks like parents and their previous education plays a big role there............
The Chelsea School District, located just north of Boston, ranks as the worst district in Massachusetts. The reduced likelihood of success in the district is due largely to conditions outside the classroom. Children growing up in financially insecure households face greater challenges to academic success than those in more stable households, and across the district, 28.1% of children live in poverty, well above the 11.5% statewide child poverty rate.
Children with college-educated parents are more likely to do well in school than those with parents with lower educational attainment. In the Chelsea district, just 18.5% of adults have a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 42.9% of adults across Massachusetts

As expected, you went looking for the worst performing place as if that indicative of the entire state. Of course you also stumbled right into another problem that you're always loathe to address: poverty
As for other countries, I don't think that's a fair comparison. There are probably 50 million plus taxpaying Brits ($12.6k/student)_but there or only about 5 million taxpaying Bay Staters.

And you went for the best performing place to excuse away the worst spots? WTH difference does it make?
I didn't stumble. I acknowledged it. It's yet another area the Govt has 'declared War on'........and we see how well that's worked out.
I also acknowledge it's not a fair comparison the say way it's not fair to compare great communities to poor communities.........or wealthier states to poorer states. But here we are.
Shouldn't we instead be questioning how a 1 room schoolhouse in a small community worked better years ago than these large, expensive complexes?

1. All I did was point out that it doesn't cost a lot to produce good results
2. And the problem is and always has been that the government never really declared war on poverty. They declared war on poor people... which seems to suit you just fine.
3. And many of the wealthier states just so happen to have good education systems that don't actually cost an arm and a leg
4. Except that it didn't

1. I've agreed with that assertion. It's not the amount of money.......primarily it's the parental involvement levels.
2. Puhlease. They've spent $Billions, if not more, on the handouts that have only served to worsen the problem.

1. People from Mass. are simply better parents than you other clods?
2. So... keeping people poor and dependent while not addressing poverty. See? I'm right.
You don't want to keep talking about 3 and 4?
Good choice.

1. I guess they must be.
2. How better to retain their dependency?
3 & 4. I'm very pro-choice........even when it comes to schools

1. probably because they received a better education
2. Exactly. The government is waging war on poor people not poverty.
