........ My question is: to what extent do I have to participate in your self-image? - Dave Chappelle
WFLA Florida Man shoots date in Florida after learning he's a man, not a woman: deputies S. Brady Calhoun
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) - An Alabama man said he shot a man when he got into a truck for an online date and discovered that the driver was a man and not a woman.
Marquis Player, 19, of Sylacauga, Alabama, was meeting his date in the parking lot of a Front Beach Road motel at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday after arranging the encounter through Tagged, an online dating app, and Snapchat, according to court records.
Player told investigators that after hopping into the truck and seeing that his date was a man “became frightened and fired his weapon as a reaction.” He shot the man in the stomach, records state.
After shooting the man, Player went to the room of 23-year-old Tadarius Dale, told him what happened, and said they needed to leave, court records state. The two men then drove away from the scene.
Meanwhile, the shooting victim crashed his truck into the motel.
Player was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. Dale is charged with accessory to aggravated battery with a firearm.
In a news release, Bay County Sheriff’s officials said the victim’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening. They added that the motive behind the shooting was still under investigation.

This story isn't quite clear because it's not saying the victim identified as a woman. In fact, the story keeps referring to the victim as a man, not "biological man." and uses male pronouns, so I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the victim is just a very effeminate-looking gay guy and the shooter didn't look carefully enough at the online profile.

It's stories like this that I find myself on the fence yet again.
I certainly don't think killing someone is the correct response to discovering you've been catfished, or whatever.
But I also have seen enough of stories like this that leads me to suspect that many people STILL feel they're well within their rights to keep secrets until they've put themselves in extreme danger. And I can't help but think many of these situations could be avoided.

Again... you're assuming the guy who got shot was keeping a secret rather than assuming the shooter made a mistake and didn't read the profile clearly.
I don't know what happened. I don't have all of the facts, so I'm offering a scenario based on what has been reported and how.

That is true and you could end up being absolutely correct.
But put yourself in the victim's position.........is there any way you'd meet up with a stranger without verifying that they know what they're getting?
Just to go off on another tangent, but hopefully to lighten the mood........do you remember the scene from Risky Business when Joel meets the call 'girl' his buddies set him up with?

1. Possibly
2. Sounds like the shooter instigated the... flirtation
Here's another scenario: The shooter knew exactly what he was getting and planned all along to "kill a fag."
3. Another great movie. It used to show fairly regularly as a double feature with "The Graduate" at the Harvard Square Theater."

2. Yikes. Sometimes your mind goes to even darker scenarios than I think of.
3. I remember that scene for how calm and polite that person was with Joel over the entire misunderstanding.
