Why would I be pissed?
Just reaffirms what I've said about Govt for years. The biggest polluters. The slowest at fixing or cleaning anything. And filled with absolute liars.
Every place needs industrial areas.......so why isn't the Govt making sure they're clean to begin with?
And these bad neighborhoods and people 'trapped'? Come up with a deal for the industries to buy them out, expand over those already polluted areas and hopefully be better stewards than in the past.
As far where everyone will go? Who knows? Seems like there's already problems with housing shortages and skyrocketing prices on everything. Maybe the Govt can provide low cost housing ......oh, wait.......that's what was part of this whole mess all along.

2. The government didn't cause the pollution.
3. Because they have been paid off by the industries doing the polluting
4. Why would a company offer to buy land at a fair market price that they'd then be forced to clean. Wouldn't be better for them to wait until the land is abandoned and they can get it cheap, whether they have to clean it up or not?
I think it was cute how you said "hopefully" as if there weren't tons of evidence showing that they wouldn't be better stewards without a shit ton of regulations... which they would ignore... and which the government wouldn't have the time or money to prosecute.
5. You think the government providing low cost housing caused the pollution?

2. But the Govt gave them permission to pollute and then failed to monitor them and/or ensure they cleaned up. THAT is actually part of their job.
3. Impossible. Politicians are all servants only looking for the best for the citizenry. Ask any community organizer.
4. IF the Govt is handling the zoning process and the monitoring of industrial areas, it should be a simple enough thing to asses these home values and make it part of their business plans/expansions/operations. THIS is why I am laughing at how Oliver gets all exasperated about "This has been going on for decades!" YEAH! Cuz the Govt is handling it.
I'll just repeat myself here.......THAT is actually part of the Govt's job. Someone puts up a business? It's their job to make sure it doesn't pollute and leave waste for others to be affected by.
5. No, I think the Govt specifically chose places to build on. And they knew what was in the area before they spend tax dollars building. You think otherwise? Most of these situations are many, many decades old.........but even a recent job by the Govt shows me how half-assed they are. The Fox River clean up in this area.......they chintzed out on it by only removing a few of the top layers filled with PCBs, then 'capping off' the rest beneath. And they got a settlement from the paper industry to cover much of the costs.

2. And the industries paid for that permission and lax oversight with lovely fact-finding missions to Hawaii, I'm sure. I'm not saying the government isn't complicit. I'm saying that businesses are complicit as well. But if YOU want to put the blame on government then I hope you'll have no problem with the government spending the money for the cleanup.

I agree there's corruption and both parties are complicit. My contention is simply that it IS actually the Govt's job to make sure it doesn't happen. And they fail at their actual job yet again.
When the subject of mines came up in Wisconsin, I supported them.........with the caveat that they would be required to take out insurance or set aside enough in funds for a complete clean up after the fact.
That way the public never gets stuck like they have so often in the past.

There's a difference between failing and being paid to do nothing.
To fail at something you actually have to try doing it first

Well, that's the problem with corruption. And the ease with which so many politicians engage in it.
Though, I wonder if anyone's done a Govt study on the difference between just plain abusing power over others, versus being paid off to do so?
Either way, this faith people place in 'leaders' seems very questionable to me.

Yeah. You side with the guys paying off the politicians then blame the politicians for being weak rather than the corporations for being... evil FLOABW

That's just cuz most of my life I've been OK with doing business with business types.
The Govt? Not so much
