Unprecedented water limits for millions in California
As the state's water supply continues to dwindle entering a third year of drought that scientists have linked to climate change, millions of residents are facing major cutbacks.

How many desalination plants are up and running in CA right now? 12 is it?
How much of that water gets to residents and how much goes to the almond farmers?
The average American uses 82 gallons of water a day. Even if you cut that usage by 20%, that's still 10 gallons more a day than the 55 gallons the Californians are being allowed.
The population of CA is about 40 million. At 55g/d, that's 2.2 billion gallons a day, which means each desalination plant has to pump out 183.4 million gallons a day. To bring them up to average minus 20% would mean that each desalination plant would have to pump out over 217 million gallons a day.
And that's not even getting into how much water is needed for farming... including the very water-intensive almond farming industry.
Desalination is actually a great solution to a water shortage and almost perfect when you live next door to the largest body of water in the world, but you have to have enough plants running to meet the needs.
But CA is a "liberal" state and you hate "liberals" and love industry so you're more than happy to say, "Fuck the people and keep those almonds coming!"

I read that entire post thinking of the Math teacher from Willy Wonka.
That last line is incorrect.......in that my only question would be WHY haven't they over built enough desalination plants when they know how much water they need?
Too busy spending $Billions on a train or two?
It also reminds me, not that the dry periods aren't an almost yearly event in Cali, of this entire pandemic period. You figure the wealthy and powerful are doing without a gawdamm thing this entire time? They probably love this and want it to go on forever.

1. The big question should be, why does the high speed rail cost so much. Some countries have built a number of HS lines for a fraction of the cost of what one small one would cost in the US. Maybe if the rich folk were paying their full tax rate....
2. Huh?

1. Because in the US it always takes overspending and Govt waste to get large scale things built. We should hire out from other countries. ;P
2. It's a tangent, alright?! Just saying a lot of people have had to do without..........but our politicians? the truly wealthy? They're loving this. Let's keep it going longer.

Just had on Modern Marvels.......they had a bit on the US Military. Mentioned that fuel for their convoys runs about $400/gallon WTH?
I also spoke with a Marine a year or so ago and he told me they charged $150/tray for meals on bases. Whether or not the person ate a lot or a little, didn't matter. They just count the trays removed from the stack, too. How'd you like to be that military contractor?

And the cost of building housing for the homeless in Cali has gone from 200 and something k per unit to over 800k. I could buy 3 or 4 2,000+ square foot houses in my brother's neighborhood (a "golf community") for just over 800k.
Trump's wall cost about the same as our latest aircraft carrier and used waaaaay less steel and manpower to build. It's essentially 2 crossbeams and slats set in concrete and it cost as much as the most advanced weapon on planet earth? And let's not even get into how overpriced that carrier is in the first place....
An Airbus 380 costs about 180 to 200 million dollars. It can carry 500 to 800 people. About 250 have been built and are in use.
An F35C costs 337 million dollars and carries 1 person. There are over 780 in service.
Does America have a "spending" issue? Sure. It also seems to have a "priority" issue as well.

Isn't that astounding? You'd think at the very least someone would have come up with a transportable, yet easily connected style of housing boxes by now?
Is that counting all of the lawsuits? or a good portion of the cost of acquiring land? I just read a little blurb on a highway in your region of the world where a woman refused to sell her home .........so the 4 lanes went around her property? I didn't think people had that much in the way of property rights over there.
You're preaching to the choir. The US has made it clear......We're in the business of making War........and not much else.
Excellent point. Agreed. $Billions are now being spent getting people elected.........when those $Dollars could just go directly to whatever issue people would like addressed.

1. They have, but they don't want to lower their margins.
2. My brother lives just outside Atlanta, Georgia

Margins? So there's nobody out there willing to just 'cover costs'?
That means he, jpat and my niece could possibly get together for a nice sit down anytime it'd be convenient.

1. Costs have margins
2. Were their paths ever to cross... but I'm not going to help that happen
