My often Bible quoting buddy can not fathom or come to grips with my opinion on abortion.
He struggles with his belief that ALL humans, from the moment of conception, are God's special creatures imbued with value and potential.
I do not disagree with him that abortion is ending a potential human life. I've got no problem with supporting another person's right to end their own offspring early on. My only gripe is the supposedly non-existent use of tax dollars.
I just don't understand how those opposed to his view reckon science elevates humans above very other species on the planet? Is it the opposable thumbs? The supposedly larger brains? The intoxicating sensation people feel towards their own offspring?
I'll also add that people do a real disservice to their own reputations as higher beings with the way they treat themselves and other people. Just an observation.

So... only human life is sacred and the rules in the Bible are just mix-and-match.
I wouldn't listen to fuck all from that guy on social, economic, religious, or political issues. Stick to talking about the Packers.

It appears you have an extremely short list of people you'd listen to.
Bible types do tend to treat it like a buffet, no? They pick and choose what to take and believe or practice. The book itself is very contradictory, imo.
You forget, the Packers and the rest of the NFL have abandoned their customer base in favor of fantasy/gamblers and the larger global market.
Though I am more than willing to poke fun at Aaron Rodgers for being a strong Union member that wants a new higher pay contract every other year........while simultaneously complaing that the team can not afford enough talent to get him another Superbowl win. Tom Brady and I laugh at that sort of idiotic thinking.

1. On those issues. If he wants to talk Packers vs Pats, then we'll talk.
2. Which is why they shouldn't be listened to... or elected
3. See? You started with "NFL" and went straight to politics and economics.

1. Both in the Top 5 teams of the last few decades.
2. The pickings would get awfully slim if you limited it to just atheists.
3. There's tax dollars and politics involved in it all these days..........unfortunately

Is human life more sacred than anything else here?
Has science come to that determination?

I was proposing his state of mind.
Was that not obvious?
Of course it was. That's how you took it originally. Why come back later with some bullshit word twisting?

I think it's VERY clear how people like him view every other species........here to be used as men see fit.
But then I asked you YOUR views on the matter
Why get so pissy about it? Were you like this when your kid was in their 'Why? Why? Why?' stage?

So, do you think that people who believe in a deity are better suited to lead?
The more religious, the better the leader?

When my kid went through the "why, why, why" stage, she was 3 not 53.
And why do you want my opinion? It has nothing to do with the internal consistency of your buddy's logic... which is pretty shoddy.
Have you got some "gotcha" cued up in your brain? If you can just get me to say one thing, you know exactly how you want to twist it to meet your own agenda?
I'll bet when your teachers asked you to draw a straight line, instead of pulling out a ruler, you pulled out your Spirograph.

I'd actually say it's a toss up. I'm not a fan of REALLY religious people.........but leadership is a different sort of quality. THAT kinda person might be the best leader you've ever seen.
My hiccup usually starts with the desire for most everyone to have someone to follow? I find that extremely bizarre.
One could argue a non-believer doesn't fear sinning and thus may do some terribly gnarly things because they do not have an ultimate punishment hanging over their heads as a deterrent. But we've seen the so called Believers do gnarly things throughout history, too.
The one thing that actually surprised me years ago was learning that most scientists are believers in something 'bigger than ourselves'. Which I'd wanna question more of them to find out where they think that leaves them?
Could it be a numbers game for you? As in most of the people you've met with religious beliefs are kinda stupid compared to you?.......without realizing that most people are religious, but even the non-believers are probably kinda stupid compared you either way?

I was an annoying and distracting student, no doubt. An eraser or two may have been tossed my way.
You're expecting consistency from most people? You're likely more disappointed in humanity than me.

As always, I think it's a matter of extremes. The more... "fundamentalist"... a person is, the more easily (and openly) they seem to hate. I don't want leaders who are going to inform their decisions based on hatred.
If a person is deeply religious, I don't want to know about it. I don't want to hear them talk about it all the time. I don't want them throwing it in my face. I think those people feel they have something to prove and they are just looking for a target.
Yes. There are deeply religious people who don't throw it in your face. I quite like people like that because it makes me feel that their life and decisions are informed by love and respect. Toss some of those folks into the electoral mix and I'll be OK with it.

If someone is going to hold forth on their opinions, I do expect their logic to have internal consistency if they expect me to take them seriously.
They don't have to agree with me, but I shouldn't be able to break their logic with a simple question or two.
