Tennessee bill requires drunk drivers to pay child support if they kill parents
While I have no issue with holding drunk drivers responsible for the damage they inflict........ was this added law necessary?
There aren't already civil cases brought against people?
In my experience, many of these drunks will just be like trying to get blood out of turnip anyway

I know that you probably see any new law as just "more control" or whatever and you've got all sorts of excuses about how it's going to fail, but try to think of this as freeing up the civil court system while also helping people who might not have the money to take advantage of the civil system... or even know that they can.
And - while I know this is the part that you care least about - it might actually save some lives when a person decides to get in the back of a taxi or Uber rather than getting behind the wheel after having a few drinks.
Weren't you complaining in another thread about too much leniency with drunk drivers?

Since Uber and taxi has been around for awhile now...... I'm not so optimistic as you. Drunks gotta drunk
My view was simply there are already laws on the books. Just seems repetitive to me.

1. One more reason for people to think twice.
Here's an idea: tell bar owners that they are going to lose their liquor license if they let drunks drive....
2. It's not a new law per se. It's just an added penalty. I thought you like punishing criminals....

1. 57 reasons aren't enough? 58 outta do it?
Bar owners are in the business of selling booze. Next your lawyerly mind will tell McDonalds to refuse service to anyone overweight.
2. Punish them with existing laws instead of passing yet another one that likely won't be enforced. They could even change the punishments on existing laws

1. How many overweight people are killing other people due to their eating habits? Are there "obese driving laws" that I'm unaware of?
2. That's what they're doing. pay attention.

1. What kills more Americans than obesity related health issues? Drunk driving is pretty far down the list.

Obese people kill themselves.
Drunks kill other people.
THAT'S the difference.

Yet the lawyers don't wanna limit it to just them. They're in it for the money

And this would remove lawyers from the equation to some extent: they won't be needed to sue for restitution since it will already be forthcoming by law.
