The Tennessean Oscar Franklin Smith moved to death watch ahead of Thursday's scheduled executionNatalie Neysa Alund, Nashville Tennessean Tue, April 19, 2022, 8:39 AM Death row inmate Oscar Franklin Smith has been moved into a cell next to the execution chamber, where he is scheduled to die by lethal injection Thursday night. Prison officials announced the move Tuesday saying Smith, 72, was placed on death watch just before midnight on Monday. Death watch is the three-day period before an execution when a death row inmate is placed under 24-hour observation and stricter rules. During death watch, Smith will get daily visits with the prison chaplain. On Wednesday, he will order his last meal. Smith, 72, was convicted of murder in the Oct. 1, 1989, killings of his estranged wife, Judith Robirds Smith, 35, and her sons from another marriage, Chad Burnett, 16, and Jason Burnett, 13. 'THE BOYS WERE BRUTALIZED': The triple murder case that sent Oscar Franklin Smith to death row RELATED: Oscar Franklin Smith, on Tennessee death row, seeks new hearing, clemency as execution looms Their brutal deaths took place inside a home on Lutie Court in Nashville's Woodbine neighborhood. Smith has been on death row for 32 years. He was scheduled to be executed in June 2020 but had two execution dates rescheduled since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. State law allows condemned inmates sentenced to death for a crime that took place before 1999 to choose between electrocution and the state's default execution method of lethal injection. As of Tuesday, he was one of 47 people on death row in the state. Tennessee has executed 139 people since 1916. He is one of several prisoners scheduled to be executed by the state this year.
So they keep a guy on Death Row for decades until he's old & grey? And then strictly observe him so he doesn't off himself before they can at the end?

This is also a perfect example for the folks who point out that the DP is waaaaay more expensive than "life in prison."

He was scheduled to be executed in June 2020 but had two execution dates rescheduled since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Yeah, they need to be careful. He's an old man and that COVID-19 virus could do him some real harm... PS - The US is full of guns and people are getting shot all the time... So why not just shoot him? Dead is dead.

Great point. Shouldn't all death rows have been made wide open to covid visitors?
They released a ton of other inmates because of covid concerns........ then act surprised that crime spiked upwards?
I suppose they could have just released to one of several obvious neighborhoods and figured it'd be just a matter of time before the eventual took place.

1. Just make everyone wear masks... what could go wrong? 2. Bad guys do bad things. 3. Cheaper than paying drug companies or the electric company.

It's weird double standard, isn't it? While in custody the state is responsible for keeping him safe... right up until they throw the switch because a phone call never came. If they were to let him die before all applications for clemency were exhausted the prison would be in violation of the US Constitution's prohibition against "cruel and unusual punishment."
And let's not pretend that the international outcry wouldn't be deafening: one more thing to bitch about when it comes to the US.
Damned if you do....

I wasn't even aware of who owns the drugs....... I guess I just assumed it was contracted out.
I just know it costs a lot more than Kevorkian ever charged. Good movie with Al Pacino by the way

to include life saving surgeries to stop natural causes/death from occurring to soon for their liking
It often sucks to be stuck between those rocks and hard places. I've discussed with my cousin his time spent behind bars and all he really expected was to NOT be in danger in and amongst the other other prisoners. Even that wasn't assured.......as he witnessed a guy get taken out right before his release with an aluminum baseball bat. They figured the family of his victim paid the assassin who was never getting out anyway.

I still reckon a bullet to the back of the head is feasible, because it can't be any worse than any other form of execution... electrocution, gassed, hanged, injection and so forth. It's quicker than some of those other methods, there's less that can go wrong and it's got to be cheaper. And all those cold-blooded killers who work for the KGB and the Mafia can't be wrong.

Stop being unreasonable, mate. You can't expect the authorities to kill someone who isn't in the prime of their life... Where would the fun be in that?

I used to call it the "25 cent solution"... back when that was the cost of a .45 caliber cartridge.
And I'd be more than happy to travel from state to state (all expenses paid plus the cost of the bullet) to do what needs to be done. Clean up costs extra.

YOU aren't aware of Big Pharma?
I'm aware of several large drug companies.........with all the infomercials, HOW could I not be?
But that sorta goes against your whole "If the US Govt ran healthcare, it'd all get much more inexpensive."
Well, not according to just the death row meds. They're paying a ton of money out when it could clearly be gotten much cheaper.....and you're not even trying to cure or keep someone alive. You're trying to DEAD them! How tough can that be? Christ, a bottle of cheap Windex and a syringe could get that job done.
