And it's really all down to the fact that they brought in the big GUNN. James Gunn knows how to write and direct and produce. The series is filled with everything you expect from Gunn: characters singing along to old, hit tunes, fast paced storytelling - including HILARIOUS banter, violent action sequences, and most importantly in this day and age: CHARACTER ARCS!
Yup. The main characters are actually challenged and learn and grow from setbacks and overcoming obstacles.
The story picks up after the events of The Suicide Squad (the Idris Elba one not the Will Smith one), which was also a Gunn opus, with John Cena in the lead role of Chris Smith AKA Peacekeeper, an anti-woke, discount Captain America who treads a very thin line between superhero and supervillain.
Let me tell you this right off the bat: John Cena can act. He's not Marlon Brando but he's not Roddy Piper either. The character isn't exactly a challenging role, but I think Cena did a great job at handling the little nuances of a man in turmoil.
The rest of the main characters are, The Vigilante: discount Deadpool; Agent Harcourt: discount Black Widow; Murn: discount Nick Fury; Economous: guy watching monitors and talking into the team's earpieces; Adebayo: a body positive (read "fat"), black lesbian who acts as both foil and friend to the very anti-woke Peacemaker; and Eagly: Peacemaker's pet bald eagle. Yes. He has a pet eagle named Eagly... and Eagly is AWESOME.
On the bad guy side, there are quite few folks but trying to explain their characters would require spoilers so let's just talk about White Dragon, a neo-Nazi, racist POS supervillain who also happens to be Peacemaker's dad, played to perfection by the T-1000 himself, Robert Patrick.
And this isn't a superhero show for kids. The language is VERY adult and there's some nudity... including a pussy pic sent by Adebayo's wife. Not just muff... pussy.
There's 8 episodes and each is about 40 minutes long so you can binge this in an afternoon, and I suggest that you do. I'm probably going to give it a second binge tomorrow.
4.5 out of 5 stars. I took off half a star for some little problems that I don't want to get into because I don't want to get into any spoilers.
