I was watching "Excalibur" (again) the other day and started perusing the IMDb page of Nicol Williamson when I happened upon this title. I had a vague recollection of seeing it in 1976 and only remembering the final twist (which I will not divulge here) and decided to download it and watch it again.
I'm glad I did. I don't know how I could have forgotten a train chase - that's right, a train chase - but 45+ years IS a long time....
I digress, the basic premise is that Sherlock Holmes (Williamson) is deep in the hell of his cocaine addiction which he self-administers via syringe in a 7% solution of cocaine and saline. Watson, played by Robert Duvall, tricks Holmes into seeing a doctor whom he hopes will help his friend to kick his addiction. The doctor is none other that Sigmund Freud (You thought I was going to say, "Moriarty" didn't you?) played by Alan Arkin. The two intellectual both spar with and complement each other in their search for the kidnapped Vanessa Redgrave.
And there's a train chase. Did I mention the train chase?
The best part about the movie is Williamson's portrayal of the Great Detective and it's easy to see that RDJ and Cumberbatch took their cues for their portrayals of Holmes straight from Williamson's twitchy and manic style.
I recommend that you watch this one.
5 out of 5 stars!*
*Ignore Arkin's deplorable accent.

I've had it on HDD for years, but I can't actually remember if I've seen it or not, so that obviously means it's time to watch it... or "re-watch" it.
And speaking of actors who have portrayed Sherlock Holmes, have you ever seen Jeremy Brett in the role? He did 4 separate seasons and a couple of stand-alone TV films. THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1984), THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1986), THE CASE-BOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1991) and THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1994). In my opinion, he is easily the definitive Holmes.
However, I must also give a special mention to Ian Richardson who played Doctor Joseph Bell in MURDER ROOMS: THE DARK BEGINNINGS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, Tom Baker - the fourth Doctor - in THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and last but certainly not least, the most famous Sherlock Holmes of all, Basil Rathbone.

I'm not familiar with the Jeremy Brett movies.
Rathbone is the Holmes I recall most clearly from my youth.

The four names I gave for Jeremy Brett, were the actual four seasons of TV serials... they each had their own title. The films are a part of the overall TV series, but separate from the seasons. I think they're available on YouTube.

It's going to be a while though. I've already got a back-up of 7 movies and two other series that I have downloaded but haven't watched yet.
