One thing you're bound to notice if you ever visit China is that they love it LOUD. Stores setup 100 watt amps outside their shops, connect them to a music player, and turn the volume up to 11. The sound inside of a dance club makes a jet engine seem like a meowing kitten by comparison. Outdoor bands and announcers can be heard a mile away even though the space they occupy is only big enough to hold one or two hundred people. Ditto indoor functions. Hell, there are lots of teachers who wear headsets with microphones and speakers as if they are addressing an auditorium full of students rather than the 40 or so filling the space we would use for 20 students. Even KTV rooms which are supposed to be mostly soundproof can't contain the volume of the wailing going on within. People riding their motorcycles and scooters have music blaring almost constantly.* I can hear the music people are listening to through their earbuds and headphones.
Of course these are the people who will light a 4-meter (13 feet) string of firecrackers and barely step back. I figure they must all be suffering from some amount of hearing loss before they even reach primary school.
I think this topic is on my mind now because Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) is coming and even though I have trained myself to be able to sleep during the 2-week firework fest, I still can't watch a movie in my own apartment even with the volume all the way up unless I go out and invest in speakers to make it loud enough for my neighbors to hear the movie as well... which they would complain about, but heaven forbid I should say a damn thing about the guy upstairs practicing his electric guitar skills at full volume at 11 pm.
So, if you ever visit China, be prepared to go home thinking about the cost of hearing aids....
*Sometimes that's a good thing as those e-bikes driving on the sidewalks - yeah they do - would be an even bigger hazard if you couldn't hear them coming

Reminds me of going to Vegas anywhere near the Strip
EVERY shop, stand, restaurant.......right next to each other........is competing to see who can make more noise and seduce you in with their chosen form of music/noise.
As someone with hearing loss already, it's immediately annoying and almost impossible to even focus on one thing or conversation. You have my sympathy.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting here at 09:35 hours, with my house opened up - it's already 78F - listening to the sound of my fan and birdsong... And if two cars are in motion in street outside at the same time, that counts as rush hour. Mind you, even when I lived in a city in my youth, it was still probably no worse than some large country towns in other countries.

Speak up you bastard! I can't hear you over the gentle birdsong from outside...

Nice!
How is your hearing? Any signs of loss? It's crazy how you often can't even follow conversations if there's other noise nearby.......you almost adapt to lip reading.

My ears block and unblock on a regular basis... something to do my my sinuses I think. I've had recurring sinus trouble since my childhood. However, when they're clear they appear to be as good as ever, or at least there's no noticeable decline in performance. I SAID THERE'S NO NOTICEABLE DECLINE IN PERFORMANCE!!!

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that magpies from different parts of the world have different types of birdsong. Apparently, Aussie magpies have a particularly beautiful and lyrical birdsong... Unfortunately, this was wasted on me as a child, as I was too busy fleeing in terror from their swooping attacks.

This is probably going to baffle you a bit.........but just the other nite I had to stop in my garage door opening and just listen/enjoy the night. I was preparing to leave for work, it was about 10 Degrees out......but the breeze was blowing thru the trees and somehow the crisp night air made it sound like the waves when you're next to the ocean. It was the sort of soothing sound my wife listens to with her electronic sleep help device.
Oh, and our street is a bit like that, too. After 7PM, even a solitary car gets the "WTH are these people doing on our street?" look. We really lucked out finding this place tucked on such a quiet dark street, that just happens to be very close to everything else.

I'm still scratching my head over that court ruling against Men at Work involving the Kookaburra song?

More than once I've stepped outside in the early hours, both during summer and winter, and walked around the house, just enjoying the ambience of the night. I generally do it when the moon is in the sky, so I can enjoy the pale light, the dark shadows and the night-time noises even more. 2. It's rare, but if there's a car on the street late at night, it's most likely to be me. If I'm going to check on the mail at the post office, or get a takeaway meal from Macca's, I prefer to do it when there aren't so many people about... social distancing.

I'm still scratching my head over that court ruling against Men at Work involving the Kookaburra song? Perhaps it was the Vegemite sandwich that caused offense? However, I've heard and liked both... many times. And I often hear kookaburras singing in the trees outside...

Well, I did just start watching The Crown. And Downton Abbey was a real hoot
Though, I have to admit...... I was never really a fan of pre-90s porn

At least they had better hairstyles back then... I'm not a fan of Brazilians... Those nearly hairless South American bastards!

Hairstyles of the Crown/Downton? or 90s porn?
Just caught a wonderful stand up bit by Greg Davies. "You're ALL trimming, aren't you? And it passed me by.....Manscaping."
