I watched Star Trek as a kid. As a teen I read the Blish books, & then David Gerrold's The Trouble with Tribbles (1973)
& The World of Star Trek (1973) so after those 2 I bought When Harlie was One.

When HARLIE Was One is a 1972 science fiction novel by American writer David Gerrold. It was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1972 and the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1973

Central to the story is an artificial intelligence named H.A.R.L.I.E., also referred to by the proper name "HARLIE"—an acronym for Human Analog Replication, Lethetic Intelligence Engine (originally Human Analog Robot Life Input Equivalents).

HARLIE's story revolves around his relationship with David Auberson, the psychologist who is responsible for guiding HARLIE from childhood into adulthood. It is also the story of HARLIE's fight against being turned off, and the philosophical question of whether or not HARLIE is human; for that matter, what it means to be human.

So the creator told HARLIE humans need private time so he couldn't watch the creator in the bedroom having sex which meant when they wanted to plot against HARLIE, they had to be having sex.
2 solid pages, descriptive "mammary", etc.

I was young & naive so since it was front & back of 1 page, I tore that page out. (The other bits were like a paragraph here & there)

My mom was proud of me being adult & not freaking out over reading a sex scene.

But mom didn't freak out.
She didn't stop me from reading science fiction which has its share of sex.

I watched Star Trek, too and bought into all of the lessons passed along about striving for better and equality amongst the races.

Again, there is such a thing as age appropriate. Sex stories should be reserved for kids a little later in development, right? Around 10 yrs old or older......y'know.....when the hormones are actually naturally flowing.

And there's a world of difference between an avid reader that seeks out more and more.......and what a school might push onto students. imo

Parents objected & it got banned from the school. Not 10 yr olds

A library SHOULD have books about the last president & first lady. I wouldn't care if they carried Donnie's stuff. 

Most of the bans are because the parents don't want to have conversations with their children. Sorry, being a parent is not easy. As Dee Snider told Al Gore when asked if it was reasonable for a parent to listen to every record in their kid's record collection, "Being a parent is not a reasonable thing"

I hated when I asked my mom stuff & she replied "general principles" rather than give a valid answer so I took the extra 5 minutes to explain to my kid, even if it was "It's late, I'm tired, we're done"

A public library, sure.........but every grade school library? Nope. Why? They doing a lot of civics with the kiddies? They can't handle Math or Reading.......but politics is necessary under 12?

I get that, I truly do. Many parents just plain suck at parenting...........but that doesn't mean I want or trust the typical teacher type to do a great job either. It's NOT their job. Those aren't their kids.

Again, with smart phones and the internet......... I doubt there is much of anything kids are missing if they want to seek it out.

How far did that take your kid's education? College grad? Big time career after graduation? I recognize and appreciate that you were a better and more honest parent than most. I'm still just laughing that the schools can suck as bad as they do at the Basics and we're all arguing over such trivial stuff.

That space, with its endless rows of books about characters from all sorts of backgrounds, has been her “safe haven,” she said — one of the few places where she feels completely free to be herself.

But books, including one of her recent favorites, have been vanishing from the shelves of Katy Independent School District libraries the past few months.

Gone: “Jack of Hearts (and Other Parts),” a book she’d read last year about a gay teenager who isn’t shy about discussing his adventurous sex life. Also banished: “The Handsome Girl and Her Beautiful Boy,” “All Boys Aren’t Blue” and “Lawn Boy” — all coming-of-age stories that prominently feature LGBTQ characters and passages about sex. Some titles were removed after parents formally complained, but others were quietly banned by the district without official reviews.

“As I’ve struggled with my own identity as a queer person, it’s been really, really important to me that I have access to these books,” said the girl, whom NBC News is not naming to avoid revealing her sexuality. “And I’m sure it’s really important to other queer kids. You should be able to see yourself reflected on the page.”

I didn't know 17 yr olds in high school were considered grade school students.

Ten current or recently retired Texas school librarians who spoke to a reporter described growing fears that they could be attacked by parents on social media or threatened with criminal charges. Some said they’ve quietly removed LGBTQ-affirming books from shelves or declined to purchase new ones to avoid public criticism — raising fears about what free-speech advocates call a wave of “soft censorship” in Texas and across the country.

Five of the librarians said they were thinking about leaving the profession, and one already has. Sarah Chase, a longtime librarian at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, a Fort Worth suburb, said the acrimony over books contributed to her decision to retire in December, months earlier than she’d planned.

In the early 2000s, a conservative backlash to the Harry Potter book series, which some Christian leaders condemned as a satanic depiction of witchcraft, fueled a surge of book banning attempts in Texas, according to the ACLU data. But even at the peak of that wave, the Texas ACLU never documented more than 151 school library book challenges in one year. I also thought the Harry Potter condemnations was silly. But who feels oppressed these days being queer? It's practically winning the Celebrity Lottery these days.

Is your kid behind some of this unionizing going on?     While I think that's great they've got some managerial experience now, thus can market themselves to a wide variety of job openings and expect a pretty good wage.......... was that a part of their educational achievements? Or did they simply work their way up over time? Just curious. I'd have to double check with my spouse, but I believe she's had some technical college courses/training......but I'm pretty sure she did not go the 4 year college route. She's gone from climbing up to restaurant GM, to being too high priced to get hired once that chain went bust. Then moved onto a completely different field.......and recently switched from public service to private in a similar field. She's certainly done a lot more than I ever bothered.
